Pepperdine Thread
I'm off to Denver to catch Tower #3's Division II tournament. Gonna see No. 1 Concordia-St Paul play. They have won the last 4 DII Championships. Tournament is loaded with ranked teams - 12 total teams, 6 ranked, 2 receiving votes. Leaving Thursday and not returning until Monday, so I'm counting on others to fill me in on this great UD tournament. Should be an awesome time at Frericks. Enjoy!

It should be an awesome time at Frericks for the Florida State and Michigan game, but everyone needs to head to the Arena at 11am on Friday for the Pepperdine game!

The Waves take out #8 UCLA at home tonight 15-13 in the fifth. They looked quick and pretty good defensively. Unless they catch the red-eye, I assume they fly all day tomorrow and then play us at 11:00 AM on Friday. Perhaps they will have a bit of jet lag. The Flyer Classic looks to be loaded this weekend.

I road the elevator at the Marriott with a few of the Pepperdine players. A lady on the elevator wished them luck this weekend, but I had to add, "except when you are playing UD".

Dang - Pepperdine takes it 16-14 in the 5th. We need to start winning these 5 setters.

That was a rough match. Pepperdine had great positioning around the blocks, and were able to pick up lots of errant balls throughout the match.
There were a few times when the Flyers kept running into each other, even though one person had called for the ball. Without looking at stats yet, the 4th set might have been the worst over the year. At least in points scored at like 14 or so.
Go get them tonight Ladies.

Yes I've noticed players running into each other more this year than in past seasons. In fact a problem last year was no one getting the ball and it fell between two players each expecting the other to get it.
All fixable problems. Communication, communication, communication.
Lets go ladies, get back on track. Go Flyers!

Six or seven points and we're Top-8 in the country right now. Lets beat FSU and Michigan and find our payoff.

First non-conference loss to a non-BCS team since Ohio in 2008.
Since the start of the 2009, here's our record breakdown:
vs A-10: 33-1
vs BCS: 9-9
vs Other: 20-1
The question I really have now is, what do those records mean with regards to our team, talent level, preparation, and ability to get into that next level? It says alot that only Xavier on the road in '09 and Pepperdine earlier today were able to to beat us out of all on the non-BCS matchups (53-2 all told), but I don't like that 9-9 record.
By the way, those 9 losses are:
09 - @ Michigan
09 - vs Marquette (at Michigan)
09 - @ Illinois (NCAA)
10 - @ Minnesota
10 - vs Illinois (at Nebraska)
10 - @ Nebraska
10 - Ohio State (NCAA)
11 - vs Tennessee (at Illinois)
11 - @ Illinois
Wins are:
09 - @ Purdue
09 - vs Wake Forest (at Western Michigan)
09 - Connecticut
09 - vs Oregon State (at Michigan)
09 - Cincinnati
10 - Pittsburgh
10 - Arizona State
10 - vs Baylor (at Minnesota)
10 - @ Notre Dame

Good post. I think if you compare the BCS wins and losses, most of the losses were to ranked teams or teams with votes just on the fringe of the Top-25, while most of the wins were not. Also, eight of the nine losses were away from home. Only OSU in the NCAAs was at home. Of the nine wins, five were at home. So we need to continue to get BCS teams at home, preferably Top-25 teams, as our road record against the same teams has not been overly successful. If Stanford can come to St. Louis, why cant we get some big timers? I thought Penn State was planning to come to UD a cpl years ago?
The next step is beating the Top-30 on the schedule.
Obviously we get a couple more chances this weekend. Considering the matches are at home in the Frericks, theres really no excuse not to make some headway. I gotta think we're the youngest team, once again, in this tournament.

Besides Shayne Brown having a big time match one stat really stands out to me and that is side out percentage.
Set 1 9 8 33 . 0 3 0 9 - 2 4 37%
Set 2 2 17 4 40 . 3 2 5 1 3 - 2 1 61%
Set 3 3 13 4 39 . 2 3 1 1 3 - 2 0 64%
Set 4 4 12 8 38 . 1 0 5 1 2 - 2 5 47% Set 5 5 9 2 28 . 2 5 0 7 - 1 6 43%
We were over 60% in the two sets which we won and below 50% in the three sets we lost. We started out very well in side outs at the beginning of set 5 and must have tanked at the end.
