DMO Tweet
"This ones on me"
Like that he is stepping up and taking responsibility. Sign of a great leader even if the entire TEAM had its chances. Still like the leader stepping up for the guys. Can lead to good things later in the season.

DMO is still an all time favorite- it's OK DMO I love your competitive attitude. I once heard Michael Jordan say: "I've personally been responsible for taking the last shot of the game over 65 times and losing it for our team. Because I've taken chances and failed, I've been successful".
This team will be successful this year. This is a team in the true sense of the word. Come March, this team will be dancing, mark it down.

DMO was frustrated all game by some questionable foul calls and missed shots. This was a team loss to a group of USC kids who played very hard all game. A good game between two good teams. Just seemed like the team was in a cloud, but that couldn't be...

if there was a decision that bothered me it was in the first. It has become clear that Pollard and Davis cannot be on the floor together. Teams refuse to defend either one, you can get away with it when only one is on the floor but together at the same time halfcourt offense is difficult to run. IIRC they were out the when the Flyers had a 9 point lead, by the time a few minutes later when Archie removed them the Flyers were down 1.

It was a bad decision because of it's timing. I'm not trying to dump on DMO because I think he plays well for us. Maybe we lose some other way, even if we don't leave the time on the clock for them, but it was not a good decision and we need not pull that punch, IMO. Learn and move on.

Demo and Vee
did not play well today. The seniors should be the ones who show the youngsters how to keep their focus during the Christmas getaway time. Instead, the both left the building with work to be done especially at the defensive end of the floor. Demo fouled himself out of the game (with 4 personals) and Vee majored in poor shot selection. But they are both good players and with plenty of season to go they will get better.

I like DMO, I really do. He just struggles in crunch time. Still, there were a lot of other guys on the floor. We had them down big and let them right back into it. We struggled to beat their zone. We struggled to push the ball and play with any speed. We struggled to make shots. We struggles to keep them out of the paint.
DMO made a very bad decision to shoot a bad shot with so much time left, but this was a team loss if there ever was one. Archie is far from innocent in this one, too. I didn't like the complete lack of adjustments, or the use of our resources.

In his mind, DMO hasn't committed a foul in 3.5 yrs. he puts up his hands to say "who me?" 90-95% of the time.

I'd have to be in the huddle to know for sure, but I would probably put this one more on Archie than DMO.
I'm sure it was drawn up for someone other than DMO, but the main main main main main main main message in the huddle should have been do not not not not not not not NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT leave any time on the clock. It would have been better to take no shot than an early shot because with 2 bigs fouled out I think we had the advantage in a 2nd overtime.
If Archie made that clear and DMO shot early anyway, it's on DMO. If Archie didn't make that abundantly clear (even if it was obvious), that's on him.
Second - several people have made the point that Kyle Davis and Kendall Pollard can't play together. I agree with that. They've both had good moments and I like them moving forward but at this point, the +/- when they play together is pretty obviously hurting us.

Now that Bob Knight is a color comment one of his play by play cohorts asked what was the most difficult part of coaching.
His answer: "Getting them to execute on the floor what was just talked about on the sideline".

In the DDN Archie was quoted as saying "when we came out of that timeout there was a very, very direct message to our team. We take the last shot. And they don't get an opportunity to come back down (the court). But we had a breakdown."

As of now the Flyers have likely played themselves pretty close to off the bubble, unless they win at Ole Miss. It is starting to remind me a lot of two years ago when we won the Old Spice Tournament down in Orlando, then came back home and showed we weren't the team everyone thought we were by letting Buffalo lay a 30 point whoopin on a woefully unprepared group of Flyers at the arena.
Basically, it is going to come down to winning the A-10 and playing well in Brooklyn. Stinkers like ISU and USC (at home) cancel out Maui pretty quick.

Play Well in Conference Play
and it will all take care of itself. Believe me the selection committee will understand getting beat by a PAC 12 team even at home. But this UD team will be challenged to perform well in conference play until they learn to stop dribble penetration to the hoop. For this shortcoming the coaches are more responsible than the players. I remember it took Sean Miller until his third year to get his Xavier team to play good man defense. As of now UD is an average to poor man defensive team that does not know how to play zone even against an out of bounds play under the opponent's basket. All I want for Christmas is for the Flyers to hold an opponent under 60 points.

It always has and it always will come down to conference play. Finish 8-8 or worse in conference and I would still not be happy even if we finished OOC play undefeated. Finish 10-6 or better in A10 play and I will even accept another OOC loss (Ole Miss).

We lost that game primarily because we had a poor shooting night and tough luck down the stretch. Despite the size disadvantage, we still managed to out-rebound USC and held them to 69 points in regulation. We aren't a bad team by a long stretch and, IMHO, we still have the potential to have a d*mn good season...this team can still go far. Don't give up the ship. Yes, that loss hurt, but it's not like we got "blowed-out" on our Home court and our overall resume is still pretty good. If we finish up the OCS at 12-3 or 11-4 and win 10+ in the A-10 we should still be sitting pretty good on Selection Sunday. This team of ours is still coming together and overall I like what I see.

I agree Bat. This team was good enough to perform like they did in Maui. It was a bad match up with their height for Khari to have the shooting day he did. Yes there were other coulda a shoulda's but to me that was the biggest one. The lack of an attempt a zone still bugs me.

I would say luck was not the cause of the loss, but poor defense combined with a poor shooting. USC is a good defensive team, but not a great offensive team.
This team is good. The question is: Can the team shore up its weaknesses enough to make it into the NCAA tournament? or will it end up in the NIT? Lots of good teams make it to the NIT.

Me too...but as far as I'm concerned that progress doesn't necessarily have to be micro progress (game to game) as much as macro progress (becoming a better, stronger team during progressive stages of the season).
They've had a few bumbles and blips along the way so far, but they have certainly improved as a team since IPXYZU. My view of a successful UD season is always the same.....pull all the pieces together by the time the A10 schedule rolls around and then start to peak going into the league tourney.
Winning NCAA games is certainly the ultimate goal, but if we could ever figure out how to play consistently well in the A10 and then in the A10 tourney, then the NCAA prize will stop being such a crap shoot for us and will be the start of greater but reasonable expectations for success at a higher level every year - with the NIT sister kiss being an exception rather than a freakin highlight of the campaign.

Still lost. I find no solace in this. I let my men's golf league team down the other day losing my match 8-2. I stepped up and took responsibility. It's the right thing to do.

Just churning a bit more on the above, which I totally agree with, there is more to it. We shoot our average % and we win. But the game demands more than that from the coaches.
We knew in their first 11 games they held opponents to 40% shooting on defense, and they also were dependent upon two players to carry the scoring load on offense. Good coaching game-plans to focus on stopping their strengths and attacking their weaknesses.
That's where we fell short on a night when poor shooting on our part presented the challenge to do something different to win the game.

I think the difference is that you are dealing with college players worried about egos, reputation, etc....
We as adults have been in those situations and really don't give a rats behind to take blame as some of those lessons we have learned. There aren't a ton of college players that will at least step up and take it.
Win the next three and take that into the STL game and things aren't that bad...

Agree. A win at Ole' Miss (almost a must win now) will do a lot to take the sting out of this one. 12-3 would look pretty darn good heading into conference play.

I must be a prophet haha. I had a feeling the situation that occurred against USC would somehow pay dividends down the road. Archie most likely over preached taking the last shot in regulation and in OT, and I'm quite certain no one had to remind DMO to not leave time on the clock. Very happy to see this coaching staff and this team growing right before our eyes. Pretty impressive non-con results, but we all know that conference play is where UD needs to step up and play even better if they want to dance!
Go Flyers!

Thanks for pointing that out Brian. OK Flyer fans, do we have enough of a sample size to say its okay for DMO to shoot threes?
DMO has had some huge games this year, but after every stellar performance (even when he makes 3s) most Flyer fans still say, "but I wish he would just realize he shouldn't shoot the three." I am glad DMO hasn't listened to his fans. He has improved his shooting. In yesterday's game, even besides the game-winner, he made two HUGE three point shots in the second half.

DMO has a funny arm motion. He shoots very well when he squares up. He has great rotation on the ball. But he does not always square up. This year, he has throw up some air balls from 3. So that is why some are nervous. He drilled a number in row before the game however.
The last 3 was a banked in fluke. The 3 at the end of regulation was nice. Ole Miss backed off him and he drained it!

No, I think we still keep yelling NO, NO, NO so he can keep proving us wrong. Why ruin a good thing

There always seems to be an excuse from the doubters. He was 3/4 on the game. The three 3s he made were possibly the three biggest shots in the game. The first, a deep one on a semi-fast break, tied the game after Ole Miss had just jumped out to a 5 point lead. The second was the possession immediately after Henderson hit a big 3 to put them up 3. The last, obviously, was huge.
It was a bank shot. But it was also a running NBA-range three. It wasn't exactly the type of shot that you normally judge a player by. By the way, Sibert banked in a three early in the game. Should that somehow be considered a blemish on his shooting ability?
Season Ticket Fan, Oliver's release is not as nice as Price's or Sibert's, but it isn't terrible. He has airballed threes. Scoochie airballed 2 three in the USC game. It happens!
The bottom line is he is 41% on the season. Keep shooting.

I don't care how they go in. There are no style points in basketball.

When a player has an unorthodox shot, you are usually more nervous when he shoots. Pierre has an odd release also. But the bottom line is results.
DMO has improved his technique. The ball rotation off his fingertips is text book.

Scoochie is another player criticized because his shot is a little flat. He made 3 of 5 three's yesterday. Who frickin cares about his style.
