Sam Miller
No write-up in the Wash Post other than a box score . . . Miller had 13 in Gonzaga High School's first game of the year . . . a win over . . . don't have the paper in front of me, some Christian school I never heard of. No info on assists, boards, steals, TOs. Gonzaga is ranked #4 in the DC metro area in the pre-season Post poll . . . after an awful season last year.

The Post's pre-season All-Met team (First and Second Teams) came out in the paper a few days ago and Miller was not mentioned although Gonzaga's PG was on the first team.

The game they played last night was a road game against Wesley Christian in Kentucky. They follow that up with a game this afternoon in Garfield Heights, Ohio.

Going to my hometown against a very strong team with 3-4 D1 prospects. One is Frankie Hughes, a junior shooting guard, we are recruiting.

Looks like Sam is going to have to hit the weight room hard before he is ready to bang with D-1 players. From previous write-ups I had the impression he was well developed physically. Also, it appears Gonzaga plays a slow game which allows Sam to just cruise down the floor at a very leisurely pace. He is going to find that is not the way it will be in AM's offense. Redshirt?

Xeyrius and Mikesell also need to hit weight room. But that's to be expected with these kids. It's the talent level and potential that are the main things. And definitely no on the redshirt. It's a different age. With 5th year free transfer option, it has added too much risk to using a redshirt year except where medically necessary.

I hear you Dallas but look at his play in the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel MD game http://www.gonzagadcclassic.org/dateslocations/. He is #20. Do you see him getting a lot of playing time a year from now even with a few added pounds?

Yes, with only Jordan to replace it is hard to envision many minutes available. However, with Jordan shooting relatively inefficiently this season, we could improve as a team if we can groom a good spot up shooter next season. Maybe that's DD, but maybe that is where a Frosh could steal some minutes. Maybe Miller.
Folks, don't get me wrong, Jordan is a strong contributor, but who isn't a bit taken back by his anemic shooting percentages.

If he is as good as his teammates say he is, Charles Cooke will be getting a lot of minutes, more than the Freshmen. Don't forget about him.

Weight is overrated unless you are a center banging down low. I would rather have a guy with speed and height who can shoot. I think Scoochie and Pierre have given up some things with their weight and muscle gain. I do not think Darrel Davis' problem is his weight.
Secondly to talk about someone red shirting based on a high school video is a big reach.

Agreed, not a whole lot of kids we're signing are come in "ready" for the D1 games.
Team next year should be exciting but I'm NOT writing off this current bunch.
Excited about next year but also think it's gonna be a lot of fun watching our current group continue to improve through the A-10 season.

If the player was good enough for D1 in high school he would be
1. recruited by more prominent schools than UD and UD would never have had a shot at recruiting him or
2. Coaches would see that he would have come close to his maximum potential and have a very low upside and therefore the reason he is not recruited by the more prominent programs.
Dayton must take the risk on players who have not reached their full potential and have a lot of upside that can tapped into by the coaching staff once they arrive on campus. It is the job of the coaching staff to be able to project that upside potential and then to get it out of the players who commit.

Nice Post!
Guessing at a player's potential is an art, it is not black and white. Work ethic, willingness to take coaching, length, toughness, quickness, speed, handles, shooting ability, shot selection, competition, teammates, unselfishness, ability to learn from mistakes. And those are just traits to evaluate without thinking about it seriously. Some people have that ability and others don't
If you aren't a top echelon program you need to bat a high percentage to make the ncaa tournament year after year. Almost everyone needs to be a solid contributor by their junior year.

Sam Miller
Gonzaga High got beat at the buzzer in overtime by the # 5 team in the nation featuring Isaiah Briscoe # 1 PG - Sam Miller lead all scorers with 24 pts and 9 boards . 9-12 from the field 3-5 from the 3 pt line - 3-6 ft line lot of comments on him playing a great game. By the way Briscoe had 17 pts.

The great part of that would be Miller and Williams can shoot from the outside and handle the ball. It would give us a whole different look when Steve is not in the game creating match up problems.

Fast forward to about 01:45:00 if you want to just watch Miller's tying 3. Gonzaga came from 21 down to send it into overtime, including 6 down in the last 15 seconds.

Ya gotta love Matt Janus, the color guy on this game. When talking about Sam, he refferred to Dayton as a "high major program."
You got that right.

We'll have more than we have this year, that's for sure. Enough that we may not have to get a big, but if there's an upperclassman center who can play next year, either from the JUCO ranks or a 5th year transfer, that sure would be a perfect fit. I do think Sam will be able to hold his own against centers as he adds strength in the coming years. Certainly can create some matchup nightmares with Miller and Williams drawing guys out of the paint to guard them at the perimeter where they can really shoot it.

Sam seems to have the kind of build that can put on the right kind of weight (Pierre vs Adedeji). May take a year or two. But really a D1 body right out of HS is not a slam dunk for production either. Nate Green, Paul Williams, Charles Little had the early weight, but not the game. We can expect the more lean and muscular body to develop along with the kid's game for most of our recruits. Then look at Darrell and the impact he has had "without a body".
Then there's Ladontae Henton--body and game from the git-go.

Just watched the whole game. Great HS game as Gonzaga loses at the buzzer in double OT. My biased opinion is that Sam Miller was the best player on the floor. He plays with a bunch of dribble and ball hogs. Sam scored about every time he got to touch the ball. The stupid announcers spent the game gushing about the KY and Wake commits, and finally had to talk about Sam when he hit the three over a 6'9" kid guarding him, to tie the game.
Sam scored 14 of his teams 24 pts in the first half. He had to sit out most of the fourth quarter and half the overtimes with 4 fouls. Sam hit 9-12 FG and 3-5 threes for 25 pts. The kid can pass and screen and understands basketball. Not a great leaper, but OK. He needs to play with more intensity and rebound better. He has a thinner frame with long arms, but is not skinny, like a Luke Fab, and will be able to easily put on muscle.
Cannot wait for Archie to coach him. I am very excited about this recruit.

I agree, but let's wait and see what happens with Rogers. I have a feeling that we are close to where if he cannot start playing soon, he will be redshirted and be available to hopefully play a full season next year. Detwon has been to hell and back to be in playing shape. It would not be fair to him to have him play a handful of conference games and call it a season. At some point you have to start thinking about his injury from the player's perspective and see if it makes sense for him to play this year, or just focus on school and healing and have a productive senior year next year.

Sam Miller looks bigger and stronger than he did last year. He moves well for a young man his size. What I liked about him was his court awareness. Watch the video from that perspective and you will see what I mean. He is fully aware of the whole court. Guys like that, especially when coupled with a lot of energy, are priceless. This is especially true in Archies fast-break offense. I see him being on the front end of a lot of breakouts next year.

I'm not sure if this has been posted here yet, but it's impressive. I'm looking forward to Sam at UD. I love a big who can step out and hit the 3-pointer.

At the NCAA tournament games in Columbus we were sitting by a group of Maryland fans... and the first thing out of their mouth was "Do you guys know that Sam Miller is coming to Dayton next year?"
After telling them "yes", they just raved about how good he his and that he could really shoot the 3.

His game strikes me as a bit like that of Doug McDermott - inside, outside, wide body.

Sold!!
Lets keep that vision. Gladly take that.
What I see is 20 ways to score a basket, inside and out. Excellent floor vision.
Great adjustments after he terminates the dribble. Great footwork.
Hope we are looking for the next Sam Miller.

Impressive. Seems like he was playing vs high-level competition.

I see Sam Miller play and think "Bo Ryan would have liked this guy."

Yeah, I had that on the tip of my mental tongue. Seen his type of play recently.
Glad we got him.

Though this is a highlight reel, you have to appreciate the diversified skill set and high bb IQ Sam exhibits. If he transfers this to the next level he could well be the player that helps take UD to the next level. Just think about the multitude of ways AM will be able to use him on the court. UD69's earlier McDermott comparison is no stretch. Exciting to see......
