3P shooting
On the yuck side, by virtue of going 0-2 tonight, DD (0.301) is now virtually no better on the year than XW (0.300). If Pollard makes his next heave as the shot clock expires, he'll only be 1 percentage point behind DD. Yes, that Pollard.
On the upside, with Sam shooting well as of late, he's now got the 5th best % on the team at 36%, only a shot or 2 behind Mikesell. We'll have some deadly shooters in the future, and some nice offensive weapons if they pick up the defense. And KD went 1-3 again, a very respectable % for him as he continues to make teams look at him out there.

It appears Archie is starting to let some of the young freshmen horses out of the barn during some critical times in the game late in the season.
XWilliams and SMiller two examples.

I am hoping Daryl finds his stroke in the next month. He was a force last year as a freshman...one of the better 3-ballers in the A-10. He has just been in a funk all season. He needs a breakout game.

X only played in the first half because Pierre and Pollard both had 2 fouls, and he is the next player who can play the 4 spot.
Sam played because of the foul trouble and because Big Steve was ineffective defensively. Once he got in his scoring and those matchups got him more time in the second half.

They better concentrate on better foul shooting, especially Scoochie

The time was dictated by fouls trouble. Absolutely.
Some of the defensive issues Miller and McElvene had were due to the absolutely abysmal way the perimeter guys - especially Kyle - played the high ball screen. They took nothing away and left the big guys in no mans land 20 feet from the basket with guys that can hit 25 footers. The big had to almost guess hedge, switch, stick with the roll. Can't make it a guessing game.

If you're looking for a "breakout" game 23 games into the season, you usually don't find one.

Team is shooting 36.2% from the 3 point line which is #102 in the nation (better than Dayton's 35.6 in 2015 good for #106, but not as good as the 37.7% in 2014, good for #54).
Dayton's problems are three-fold:
(1) Free Throws shooting 67.3% for the year, good for #264/351 teams.
(2) Defending the 3, teams shooting 35.3% from 3 versus Dayton, 203 best defense not good.
(3) Turnovers. Trending better but still turning it over 19% of possessions for 232/351.
Dayton cleans up these three areas and can be a Sweet 16/Elite 8 team.
3 point shooting is solid and not an issue, DD will find his stroke like Miller has.

The 3 point defense and pick and rolls from the high screens have been a problem all year. The team gives up a lot of early 3s. It seems as if they come out relaxed on perimeter D to start the game often.
I would be interested in the 3 defense by half. I bet opponents shoot the 3 ball better in the first half. (or so it feels to me.)

Right now Darrell Davis is turning into Coby Turner from the 3-point line...awesome one year, ice ice baby the next.

Paging SLUFlyer about DD. He had that breakout game 24 games into the season.

DD's consistency has been absent so far, but his extra practice has been paying off, especially last night. DP saw him wide open in the corner didn't hesitate to zip the ball to him. When he's that wide open, he seldom misses. DD had no doubt KD could get one more stop in the last seconds. It took 14 seconds of team defense before McGlynn could get a shot off and with KD's hand in his face, he was just enough off-balance to miss it. Steve grabbed the rebound and held on tight like his life depended on it. Which it did, lol.
This team is so much fun to watch, even in the heart attack games. Not always pretty, but interesting. They don't need pretty--pretty is boring.
