Exhibition Game

Exhibition game. Hard to see what regular season game conditions might be like. UD was much taller than Capital. I saw some good things tonight however I was very, very disappointed in the defensive effort.

On the positive:
Mikesell is healthy and is as smart offensive ball player.
Toppin has springs and is long. He can dunk and block shots.
Matos lit up 3s in the second half. He looks like he can contribute immediately.
Others had good games as well. The offense could score a lot at times.
Some great dunks!

No way to sugar coat the defense. Granted, Capital played a 5 guard offense, but they shot lights out with open shot after open shot all night long. Their players can play in and out. At one point in the first half they were shooting 86% from the field.

The interior players, Cunningham, Toppin and Mikesell had terrible defensive games. They were beat time and time again. Again, they were covering shorter players in a guard offense that picked a lot, but everyone was beaten off the dribble or off picks. Capital had way too many clean, open looks.

D3 schools are often difficult to play because of their matchups, but I would like to see more communications and dedication to defense.

I am hoping that the defense will improve dramatically, but the holes were very evident. It is an exhibition game, but if the play D like they did tonight, they will repeat last year.

The sky is not falling, but there is lots to improve on defense.

14% 3 point shooting in the first half and in the second half when Capital went zone, to protect their scorers, we started to make them.

Mikesell had a great game and directed the offense.

I was not at the game, but just watching the highlights I'm less concerned than I was about rebounding going into the season. Toppin looks like he can contribute, he's not a big uncoordinated oaf out there. Landers is a beast and we just need the other guys to hold their own. In games where we're not in foul trouble we might be about average as a team (not good, just average).

Rebounding will still be a problem for us but maybe less than anticipated?

Matos was really good both offensively (didn't force a shot)and defensively. Capital was a veteran ball club there 5 starters played most of the minutes. I was impressed with Cohill, really not an outside shooter but did very well. Policelli was a freshman.

I am a little less worried about the defense. They looked like a team that has 4 returners and 5 new guys. I am counting Mikesell as new because he has not played with anyone other than Landers and Landers only played 57 minutes that year. This was only their second time against another team so far.

Good points above.

Offense will be fine. Pretty athletic and it looks as though shooters will show up.

Defense...jeez. Capital exposed UD with the use of a simple back cut. Pet peeve of mine for sure. You let a DIII team come in and out smart you on our defensive end. Simple and basic movement kept them in the game early. This game showed exactly what one of the only differences is between DI teams and DIII teams...size and durability for 40 minutes. Capital executed better than UD.

Yes, it is the preseason and the lineups weren't the lineups that you would see if this wasn't a DIII opponent...but they have work to do on defense. I know there are comments that people aren't worried about defense due to UD having a new roster...but that isn't an excuse for getting beat up on multiple possessions by a DIII team playing fundamental ball.

I'll wait until next week after Grant puts a foot in some rears before Wednesday.

He’s a kid who values relationships,” Greer has said. “Jhery was mature enough when we recruited him to understand what was real and what was fake. He needed to be at a place where they really cared about the kid, not just his basketball, and I believe he’s finding that here.”

“I finally feel like this is my place. It’s home to me right now. The people, the community. They show love all the time … 24/7. There’s all the T-shirts, the commitment to the program. You walk on campus and everybody says, ‘Hi.’

Look for Matos to either start or get starter minutes very soon. Jhery gets it, play hard every play and play defense.

I see us having depth and inside muscle as weaknesses this year. The defense looks awful right now, but Archie's defense looked awful for a few years until his teams bought in. We will see if that happens or if our coaching is as effective at getting defensive results ultimately. Teams can change a lot in the course of about 15 games at the college level. I think we are pretty talented offensively.

Grant has thus far talked about the importance of defense. Now we will see if he is serious by spending lots of practice time on defense and benching the offenders during a game.

Princeton perfected this type of offense and they beat many teams that had much more talent in the NCAA tournament. You couple smart players with total buy-in of the system and a lot of good things can happen. Pete Carril worked magic with his teams.

Having Cunningham and Mikesell on the court together is a huge liability. Both are slow to rotate and neither have the foot speed to guard on the perimeter, or in the paint for that matter. You can (hopefully) overcome one player with serious defensive issues...but not two.

Good point. We're still short on depth, but we've got enough to actually bench someone if they aren't playing D.

I am very excited about his group. They will get better as the year goes on. Good upside and we will be very good next year. Clearly cannot play man to man this year, we will trap and press more to get energy and turnovers to get the offense going. Need more energy and toughness, starts with Josh, he needs to come out a lot more ready than he did on Friday. Our schedule is very tough and NF has 5 returning starters who averaged double digits and a 6th man who was at 9 per game. Coach Driscoll said they are his best group in 12 years. Fort Wayne and Geo Southern are also better than you mite imagine. Boys need to be ready Wed!

If I were Grant I would at least consider telling the players that the 5 guys who give the best defensive effort in the practices preceding the game are going to start, period. Hopefully the threat would be enough to get the message across. If we aren't better on defense, I don't care if we can score. We won't win against good teams and we won't win close games.

My God! If we can't play man to man, (i.e. the simplest possible defensive concept) I don't even want to see what an attempt at a trapping press looks like.

They will play it, but will have to switch things up. Some of the combos will really struggle in man. ie Ryan/Josh/ Jalen. Need much better pressure on top. Crutcher and Davis need better on ball D.

Coach, we've got a problem. We're no good at defensive rotations. What are we going to do?

Let's rank every defense we could play from "most rotations needed" to "least rotations needed".

Then we'll avoid the ones that need the most rotation?

What?! NO! We're going to play the one that needs the most rotation. By exposing our weakness, it will disarm our adversary.

Our defensive coaching is much more effective when you start with Kyle Davis, Dyshawn Pierre, Kendall Pollard, and Charles Cooke.

Good point. He recruited some defensive prowess after a few years, especially with Davis.
