UD Arena Camera Platform Video

I ran across this video on youtube that shows how people get to the camera platform at the arena. For those of you who have never been up there it will give you a different perspective. The walkway the camera guy is on also crosses to the other side and right over midcourt/the scoreboard.

From 89 - 92 I made that trip at least 100 times. I think it is the reason I am now afraid of heights.

I knew those walkways were up there, but I never realized that all those cross-members obstructed the path. And with no retainer fencing on either side of any of those walkways? No thanks.

On rare occasions, over the 40 years of attending games, I have noticed some traffic on those catwalks during games.

If you really want to get the willies, check out this video of climbing up into the steeples at St. Mary's church to raise and lower the star every Christmas.

Made this walk many times while working there. Never got used to it.

I'll never forget the time I had to walk the Alabama managers up there so they could set up their cameras. Waited until I got to the air handler room before I asked what their thoughts on heights were. Took me 5 minutes to get the one to take the final step over, I think he may have started to cry at one point.

I sometimes used it to get from one side to the other on busy game days.

Back in the day when the Arena was first built and before the very first game there was an open house in which the public was invited to walk through the place. If I remember they did not yet have all the seats in place! I and a few of my house mates walked over those catwalks to get onto the platform. Also walked into the space that contained all the sound equipment consoles etc.

At the time all was pretty impressive!

I don't remember the cat walks being that 'scary' and I have had vertigo on occasion over the years ... don't remember how I got to the platform, but thought it was uneventful at the time. I wonder if they changed the way to get there since I 'visited' the platform in 1969!

I knew a guy who jumped off a moving train in Dayton while I was in high school. His body was messed up, but we suspected his head was messed up before he got on the train.

At least none of these guys said, "Here. hold my beer" first....
