Capital (Exhibition) Game Thread
Back for another year of this boys and girls... It's Game Week (Unofficially)! lol
Let's welcome home Damon and for a game on Friday at 7 PM. Capital U went 12-14 last year.
Projected Starting Lineup (based off last year):
G 14 Cameron Caldwell 6’0” 180 SO Westerville, OH
G 22 Joey Weingartner 6’2” 190 SR Centerville, OH
G 3 Austin Schreck 6’3” 210 SR Erlanger, KY
F 11 Will Hannah 6’5” 195 SR Milford, OH
F 40 Caleb Cox 6’7” 220 SR Cincinnati, OH
Schreck is their best player (15.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 2.3 APG)
I know Jablonski said there would be no stream... But ESPN+ does list the UD Game, so we'll see.
Time to get to work... Go UD!

I just rechecked the ESPN schedule for upcoming games. They have removed the listings for both the men and women's exhibition games that were there before. I did not see streaming listed on DF.com for either, but if it was there for the women, it is not there any longer.

These D-II and D-III teams never fail to impress me. In this case, Capitol is a D-III program.

Defense has really picked up, resulting in some breakouts. Davis and Crutcher are two quick guards.

Capitol is getting into the paint too often...and they can finish. Very inconsistent play on the defensive end.

Flyer Defense is Poor
They will not finish in the top 8 of the A-10 with such poor defense. This is a D III team that is on pace top score nearly 80 against Dayton.

Crutcher back in the game! Whew.
If Davis can get one more the Flyers will have 7 players in double figures scoring.

I'll be anxious to hear from those who were there at the game for some first hand observations.
I'm glad to hear that Matos did well, same with Mikesell and Toppin and Landers. Now if they can only learn to play some defense...
Bucky commented that these guys really like eachother. Good to hear. Now play defense together!

First impressions.
Team: Defense still needs work, but it’s obvious that these guys like each other and enjoy playing together. I think we’ll see the best teamwork since The Magnificent Seven had us on the cusp of a second straight Sweet Sixteen in 2014-15. Am I expecting the same level of success? Not yet. But Toppin, Matos, and Cohill all showed flashes of great potential, Mikesell looks like he’s ready to assume a prominent role as an upperclassman, and all of the returning players look stronger and more confident. I think these guys have a real chance to have a Top 4 finish in league play.
Arena: The changes will take some time to get used to, but they’re overwhelmingly positive. The new Club seats will be a great addition for those who have them, and the new concourses will really help egress. The negatives are that “congregating space” seems to have been reduced, and (speaking personally) there seem to be fewer options for men to “get relief” at halftime. Beyond that, yes, generally major upgrades.

Note: Based on the exhibition stats I received, substitution patterns around free throws are not accounted the same as years past. Previously, if you were subbed out in between 2 shots, the substitution would be listed AFTER the second shot. For the exhibition game, the substitution was entered BETWEEN the 2 shots, therefore, altering plus/minus. I've modified the play-by-play to revert it back to previous years method, and will do so in the future if that is necessary.

Thanks for the stats, Figgie. The plus/minuses will be interesting to watch as the year progresses. Hope you will continue to post these for current and year to date.
This may be overkill, but can you program your analysis to show pairs of players the same way? I'd be curious to see for example what plus/minus effect there is when Cunningham and Toppin are in together. Or Matos and Cohill together. Is that a fairly simple programming enhancement, or is it a big pain in the butt for you?
And if it's an easy tweak, why not show triplets also? I bet somewhere some big differences would show up. (ie the "effect" of the walkons at 205 ppg! Talk about bragging rights!)

What?!?!!? You think I just sit around, waiting for people to suggest things for me to work on, and then just grace them with the results? What do you think I am, a statistical God? Oh, wait, I am. Oh wait, I already have those queries done...
I don't normally post them, though. It's all about combinations. For instance, for the Capital game, there are 47 combinations for 2 players, and 86 combinations for 3 players. For the full lineup, I only list if the entire lineup happens twice, or at least 90 seconds.

The only difference between the two posts is no per40 on the 2 and 3 player.
For instance, Matos had the best at +20. The best 2 player combo was Cunningham and Matos at +15, and they were on the court together for 14minutes 17seconds. For three players, the best was Matos, Cunningham and Landers with a +12 for 7minutes and 31seconds.

We will get torched all year when Cunningham and Mikesell are in the game together. Both are just too slow to react to rotations and dribble penetration.
