Pierre...why not Furman game?
A question to Rollo, if semester ends on Dec18 with finals, why would DP not be able to be reinstated that day?

So fall term ends after finals and the last day of finals is the 18th. So the fall term ends after the last final on the 18th. Meaning the 19th is NOT the fall term. So I have to agree with the OP here, why can't DP play against the Furman University Christian Knights?

No, classes end on the 18th, the fall term does not end until grades are submitted.

Actually he was suspended for the semester, which is likely 10 games, depending on what constitutes the end of the term. Thus this thread.

Because...
...nothings ever that easy with the NCAA and/or college athletics these days. I realize the suspension was invoked by UD, but ya all get my drift

Maybe the same folks who thought the W & M game was over T'giving break (and mistakenly made 200 level student seats available to the public) calculated "games missed" for DP!

Um...no. That is not what it says. Sorry if this seems rude but you could've at least read the thing before making an erroneous comment. That is not what it says. It says verbatim "fall term ends after final examinations."

I sure hope the end of a semester isn't tied to the submission of final grades for 2 reasons: (1) professors have up to a week after the final exams to enter the grades and (2) grades are appealable for up to 60 days.
In other Royal words, I think the question about Pierre playing in the Furman game is legit.
Also, if Pierre was suspended for 10 games, he would have remained a student.

This is purely a guess, but if the term ends on the 18th it would seem that DP wouldn't be allowed back on campus until the 19th, which would be the date of the Furman game. It would be unrealistic for AM to simply suit him up and put him in the line up without seeing if he's in game shape and without him having practiced at least a few days with the team. That, IMHO, wouldn't seem to serve anyone's purpose.

"With only days left in the fall semester, a federal judge is now considering whether the University of Dayton erred in suspending basketball player Dyshawn Pierre for the semester following a sexual assault allegation...If Pierre’s suspension is upheld, he will be eligible to return to school on Dec. 20, in time for a Dec. 22 game against Miami University."

From an NCAA certification standpoint, the semester is not over until the players are certified, and they cannot be certified prior to grades coming out. Since he took a missed semester and was below full time, he won't be eligible until that happens.

What UD needs is more Mesters. If the first Mester ended on November 1st we would not need to have this discussion.

Are you certain? Since he wasn't in school, what is there to certify? I understand about all the current active players, but I don't see why Pierre would have to fall in with that group.

I'm positive. Generally speaking certification is submitted on a team by team basis. The semester is over when the team is certified. They have known all along that he wouldn't be available prior to then.

Brew,
Serious question--is the NCAA certification done thru the notoriously slow clearinghouse office, or since DP has previously been cleared academically can we expect a quick turn for reinstatement?

The Clearing House does initial eligibility, but for certification they accept what a school submits to them. It's the sport administrator (usually the AD or associate AD), the Director of Compliance (or an eligibility specialist if their is one), the FAR, someone from Academic Support, and the Registrar that officially sign off on it and submit it to the NCAA. There is no reason it should take longer than a day if they know what they're doing, which I'm pretty sure UD does. It won't be a problem.
EDIT: To more accurately answer what I think you're asking, the Clearing House looks at every new student athlete to make sure they meet initial eligibility. For certification, they leave it up to the schools and it's like a random tax audit. They may just show up whenever to double check, and if they find any mistakes everyone's life is hell. But, in this case, UD will have him ready to go the day grades come out. I don't see how they wouldn't.
