Fouls biggest problem?
Latest NCAA stats show UD as 315 of the 346 ranked schools in fouls per game (23.3). Of the other schools on the same page, the only one I spotted with a decent record is Monmouth (338 with 25 per game). At the other extreme, UC has 14.7 per game. First thing that occurs to me is "must move feet, show ref hands", but I think a lot of this is on the offensive end -- illegal screens, bull in china shop drives and is a big part of our other major issue, which is turnovers.
Any thoughts?

Interesting. Will see what pans out in another 6 games or 3-4 weeks. Considering the last two games were CLEARLY called tight -- that's 33% of our games so far. I'll look up the game by game breakout.

Game-by-game break out -- in order:
26
20
19
21
26
28
Take the last two off and the average is 21.5. Where does that fall on the stats?
I will say, we are playing a lot of freshmen minutes and they tend to get more fouls -- so you have to factor that in also.
Interesting info -- will be something that should be followed up with as the season progresses. Good info!!

New /Rules and Frosh
So with the new rules if they stick to it, makes playing man to man very difficult. Cant use the arm bar as a player flashes thru or around you. For anyone as we are seeing this is a tough change and even more so for Freshman. Archie said we are at our best on his show when Steve is on the floor. Even against his instinct Archie has to add a secondary defense. I think this group with its length, X or Cooke on Top can play the 1-3-1 zone or trap that X thru at us. Be a good change of pace when teams make a run, it can lead to a quick steal and keep Steve on the floor longer. I watched a layup line this weekend pure man this year will be tough to win with.

Guys did it years ago without issue. Donoher played nothing but man, so did Bobby Knight. And they did it without excessive fouling.
The college game will adjust. Show your hands, move your feet.

A return of Pierre resolves many problems, including foul trouble. Unless he himself gets the fouls. A big problem for the Flyers is the lack of height, length, weight, and general bulk. Puts defenders in very compromising positions. Xavier knew it; and as such they kept coming at us to create that foul trouble. They know Pollard can score; thus they went right at him. They did the same thing to big steve, as to get rid of his size.

Biggest opportunities to improve are: (1) turnovers; and (2) defending the 3.

Shooting 3's ----shot selection and accuracy---isn't far behind. Also missing ft's, especially the front end of 1 & 1's. There's one miss and one missed opportunity.

Things we'll see improve by conference play in order of importance:
*Turnovers
*Fouls
*Shot Selection
I was also thinking that players make the biggest jump in skills and strength from Frosh to soph, but make the biggest jump playing within the system from soph to junior.

We're a very young team with a lot of new faces trying to learn to play together as a unit; this takes time. The talent seems to be there and the coaching staff has a proven ability to develop young players and get the most out of their God given abilities. We'll have our ups and downs, just about every team does, so while we may have a few games where we collectively lay an egg early in the season, we should be meshing pretty well as Conference play begins. At the moment (IMHO) we need: DD to settle down, start hitting a few outside shots and get his confidence back; KP to find his rhythm in the new alignment we have on the floor; the freshmen to get comfortable with the flow of the game; cut down on turnovers; and, hopefully get DP back in school. With some seasoning (and barring injuries) this could be a very dangerous team come Tournament time.

Yep...Returning an 8-9 RPG player who goes upwards to 240-245 lbs. is enormous...Whether DP is boarding the ball or not he simply creates a territory around the hoop that allows other players to also come in for rebounds and keeps offensive players at bay with that strong lower body..
Outside of that they simply have to find a way to keep Big Steve on the floor for 20 mpg.No way around that at least until DP comes back....He allows UD to extend their defense to the perimeter without worrying about getting beat to the hoop with his presence there..
