Sub update YTD
1. Grant is simultaneously the worst and best coach in UD history, and half of this sub hates you
2. Mali is finally back, Elvis is close. Good news with a limited bench
3. We have a 96% chance of a double bye in the A10 tournament, and the auto-bid is the only way we are making the dance outside of a miracle
4. This is the worst season of A10 basketball, and teams needed to be weeded out and added
5. Stop harassing players on their social media. Also, would be nice if they covered.
Did I miss anything? Let's get it done tomorrow vs. GW.

I heard the Pine Club got new ownership. If true, let's hope they don't ruin it like what happened at Milanos.

I don't think the new Milanos is bad but I remember the 90s pre-renovation, expansion being much better

UD grad Steve Bulpett who now covers the Celtics and the NBA at large for Heavy.com refers to the old Milano's as "before they changed the grease." Jim Paxson, Sr. used to bring Jimmy and Steve subs from Milano's whenever the Celts played Cleveland when Jimmy was the GM of the Cavs.

I can't give you any info on Pine Club as I haven't ate there in over 10 years. And they were just as good as always then.
But all I can say about Milanos is I used to live for their Italian Beef sandwiches. I now live somewhat close to Chicago and have yet to find one as good as Milanos used to have.
The last time I went in, I was watering at the mouth for one. Menu had different sizes. I asked for the original one, stuffed and loaded with cheese. Waitress says "I have no idea, maybe you want the large? I'm thinking, well that makes sense. It had about 1/3 of the meat of what I used to get, with a little cheese sprinkled in and dry as heck. I was disgusted.

Mike Ditka sells Italian Beef with a sort of gravy/au jus-type sauce mixed in with it in the frozen section of some grocery stores, it is real good IMO.

People from up here rave about Potrillo's. I'm curious, have any of you that find Portillo's Italian Beef so great, ever had Milano's Italian Beef prior to the mid-90s? I find it so humorous that Chicago and surrounding area that think they are the center of the USA when it comes to Italian have yet to produce an Italian Beef that compared.
I guess what I'm asking anyone, is there anyone who ever had Milano's IB when it was good, still think Portillo's is "awesome"?

Ditka’s is more than a $30 sandwich! Mike Ditka is actually a good dude. My dad and brother went your to dinner with him 10+ years ago (my bro is in broadcasting). Ditka would take pictures with anyone who asked. When the bill came, Ditka pulled out a wad of cash and included a fat tip with the meal. He’s not what people think.

I always thought Ditka was a good man. The only thing I ever thought negative about him as when he traded his whole 1999 draft to Washington for the right to draft Ricky Williams. Terrible trade to begin with then Williams quits for a couple years so that he can smoke pot.

Just so no one gets confused, the PINE CLUB changed hands wbout 2 years ago. The new owner said he didn't want to make any changes and after a half dozen visits I haven't seen any.
As to Milanos one of the things that made them special was their bread. They made it fresh every day. After they changed hands back inthe 90's it was never the same. As they modernized the old place everything slowly lost its charm.

I really loved their subs back in the old days. I did not realize that they made their own bread back then. Their old ovens were gnarly and covered in molten cheese from 1960. They were served by a woman in a lunch lady uniform and hair net that looked like Chris Farley. I think that combo must have been what I liked.

I remember an older, thin, white haired lady who always had cigarette in her mouth while she was pulling the sandwiches out of the oven. I don't know why, but those sandwiches with ashes peppered through tasted a lot better than what you get today.

Last I remember, I think it was a Skyline. But back in the 70s, when I loved Milanos, I remember it being a Hardees which had the greatest fast food burger back then called the Deluxe Husky.

Yeah, I was there in there with two other guys for that once. Do you remember how much they were charging for that?
These other two guys were big eaters, it was an impressive display of eating that day by them. We had a ton of empty 3 way and coney plates stacked up on our table I remember, lol. I could barely walk out of there after that, I was so stuffed.

I completely forgot about it till Smitty mentioned it
It was less than $10 I believe because I remember going in there in junior high
My memory could be off because that was so long ago but I think some of the football players were eating 20 plus coneys

Are you referring to the "Wah Fu"? I think that is Manderin for "12 pounds of rice per dish". They were north on Brown in the area across from Taco Bell in the 89-92 timeframe.

Yup. I wish I knew then what I know now. A great friend and I just talked about how it’s not the same on Tuesday night on the way to the game (well, we may have been on our way to Cassano’s before going to the game). I really do think that great bread makes a huge difference.

I knew that the new Milano's wouldn't be quite the same when I picked up to-go subs and they were both in styrofoam clamshells (no, I didn't really need the potato chips) rather than in the sleeved bag which allowed my whole AC to marinate on the way home.

I was in Dayton for reunion weekend last June and went to Milanos. Wanted to have my favorite Candian Bacon sub from back when I was in school. The waitress looked at me sideways and said we don't have Canadian bacon and I'm not even sure what that is.

Are you guys getting confused about B-Dubs? I remember Skyline from the early 1980s being in an old Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, which was eventually bulldozed to accommodate the Milano’s expansion.

I had Flying Pizza last night and it’s simply the best in the area. It’s still owned by the same family and quality matters as evidenced by the father and two of his sons working last night. New York Style in a plain white box, can’t beat it!

That always gets my vote in the Best of Dayton polls. Been going to the downtown location since I was a Freshman in high school, back in 1976-77. John ran the place back then. Frank and his brother run the joint now. Still one of the best dinner values in the area (but not like when I used to get 2 squares and a Coke for $2.25).

Wasn't sure where to put this so I'll put it here.
I was watching a movie called Walk Softly, Stranger from 1950 on TCM the other day. The movie is set in Ashton, OH, which I think is a fictitious town. Some of the scenes are in a bedroom and there are a few college pennants hanging on the wall. One of them is a Dayton pennant with the word "Dayton" and the letters "DU". I'm assuming the prop department made this pennant themselves and it was not a real pennant that was purchased.
Maybe some of our recruits are classic movie buffs and this is why they write "blessed to get an offer from Dayton University"...

In this tweet is a picture of Jack Salee, Jim Paxson Sr. and Tom Blackburn from a 1951 Springfield newspaper. From the caption, "Dayton University" and "Louisville U Cardinals".

Rocky Rococo
I used to enjoy the pizza and dog combo meal....Skyliners (chili without beans tough to find) and deep dish slices from Rocky Rococo. The Italian sausage helped soak up my Goebel's from the previous night. I think I used to bankroll change off a 5 spot on this meal.

At my son's bachelpor party weekend last summer in Cinci, I learned of a new fad at the Benglas and FC Cinci games...you order a slice of LaRosas pizza and a chili dog...put the chili dog in the middle of the slice and fold the crust around it...it's called a SkyRosa. Wash it down with a beer and it's like a slice of heaven.

I'll take your word for it. Never cared for LaRosas. But I will say this about Skyline. They have the greatest hot sauce I've ever had. Their Coneys with cheese are good, but putting one pack of hot sauce on each is absolute heaven.

Yeah, I had a coney the other night, and I stopped, shook my head, and I thought to myself: you know what? I gotta give it to them. These da*n things do in fact taste da*n good. Lol

I had wondered whatever happened to that chain. They are still in business mostly up in Wisconsin. I was up in Milwaukee several years ago right by the international airport, I drove past one of their locations, turned around, went in, and had dinner. It tasted like I had remembered from when they were in Dayton years ago.
