I gotta agree. Why hasn't Jablonski written a piece about this? He should get a comment from UD on what is going on with injury statuses.

He’s too busy getting to the bottom of what happened to Amafule, why Brea went stone cold, why RJ went to the dog house, why Washington left, where, Baker is, how a can’t miss kid like Luke Frazier could go, etc.

Dayton guards Malachi Smith and Koby Brea will undergo surgeries this spring to repair injuries they played through last season
https://www.daytondailynews.com/spor...EEPC3O4CHSMSI/
"Smith, a sophomore guard, will have reconstructive surgeries on both ankles. He will have his right ankle repaired Thursday and the left ankle operated on approximately 10 weeks later.
Brea, a third-year guard who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, will have rods inserted into both of his legs to address stress fractures he dealt with in his tibias over the last year. His surgery will take place April 6."

Weeping? Seriously? Because after an entire year, Jablonski finally got an answer on Koby's injury(s)? I don't have a big issue overall with his reporting, but your response is a bit childish, honestly.
And frankly, rather than whining about what other people say re: Jablonski's reporting, the focus on the disucssion should be that Mali will not likely be ready for any activity at all until Mid August and Koby, with a 4-6 month recovery time, tending towards the longer, may not be available until October, to even start any conditioning. I'd say the likelihood of having Brea for the start of the season is extremely low. Smith is more likely, but will have missed most of the extended development period.

I hope the surgeries work, especially for Malachi. So far it's seemed like there was little chance that his ankles could survive two more years of basketball. Hopefully it will turn out like it did for Ryan Mikesell, who had surgery on both hips and a year later came back seemingly good as ever.
I've had a tibia stress fracture - very painful - kudos to Brea for being tough enough to keep playing productively.

I'm sure he wasn't, but man, it's this constant bashing of other people on this board that sometimes makes it an unpleasant place to visit. Sometimes, the better part of valor is just to present the information. People who dislike Jablo are going to dislike him regardless.

I knew Smith and Elvis were in rough shape, but never knew Brea was in that condition. Probably explains, imo, why he was a bit off.

TO those of you that have been bashing Grant… imagine what he and this staff and these kids have gone thru . You’re dead wrong about his coaching and pace of play ! What he and the staff did to get thru this year is remarkable .. by the way Elvis Doesnt need surgery but he is still down and Mike was down in Brooklyn .. I was there I am sure most of you were not ..: the kids were shot gave it all they had… you should pray you had Grants fortitude and perseverance instead of the constant bashing ..:

More context brings more clarity to the challenges both personal and team oriented. Hopefully they both get the treatment, rest, recovery, and rehab they need to be 100% for an entire year. Still wondering about Elvis though.
I grew 8" between the summer of 8th grade and the spring of my Freshman year. I was planning to run track and pole vaulter for the Elks my freshman year and got simple shin splints and bone pain in my legs so bad I had to step away for the year.
I can't imagine how hard it was to tough this out for a year at a much, much higher level pf competition and with more stress and pain.

I get the general lack of transparency and keeping things in house for the most part. I actually support it.
I think it worked against AG this year with Brea. Just a "he hasn't been right but he's a fighter and going to give it everything he can" type quote might have quieted the more rational of the critics. Lol... Of course it would have sent the more irrational of the supporters completely over the top.

If the policy is to limit discussion of injuries, then you should limit the discussion of injuries no matter if its good or bad..
I've never really understood the bashing of Jablo in this regard. I'm guessing that he has more info on injuries than he has been willing to share, and I'm guessing that info comes as a quid pro quo for access into the program that CAG wouldn't give him if he thought he would put into media things he doesn't want shared. On Jablo's end, its likely a deal worth making for access into other things that he can share.
Anyhoo, here is to a speedy and full recovery for all injuried parties and perhaps a realization of the season we all expected this year (players and staff included) in 2023-24.

The guys that wanted to play might have gotten out voted by the guys that didn't want to play.
We still had:
Holmes
Camara
Blakney
Amzil
Mike
Richard
Zimi
Uhl
Possible yes votes/wanted to play:
Holmes
Camara
Mike
Zimi
Uhl
Possible no votes/unable to play/didn't want to play:
Amzil...transferred out
Blakney...transferred out
Richard...transferred out
Elvis...injured
Mali...injured
Brea...injured

Mike Sharajamts, like Elvis, was in a leg brace and saw limited minutes in Brooklyn. So leave him home, too, and start Uhl at PG with no backup??? Puh-lease. Skipping the NIT was pre-ordained. Why not just forfeit with that logic.

What about the 2014-2015 season under Archie?
McElvene was a partial qualifier and was ineligible. Bass got hurt. Scott and Robinson were dismissed from the team in December. Rogers was injured. Cooke had to sit out a year. There was one open scholarship. That is 7 scholarships accounted for.
That left the remaining six:
Darrell Davis
Kyle Davis
Scoochie
Pierre
Pollard
Sibert
Plus Wehrli got significant minutes.
They made the 2nd round of the ncaat with 6 scholarship players.
Even without Mike, we still had 6 scholarship players. So yes, start Uhl, and play in the NIT.
Dayton is a proud program with a proud history, I really don't like this quitting and giving up stuff.

You guys act like Jablo performed some journalistic masterpiece to obtain this information.
You know how this happens?
Doug Hauschild sends an email to local media who report on the Flyers. Jablo didn't go in a beat the guys into submission for answers.
UD controls the news about the program. Not our local media.

Oh bullsh*t! Eveybody would take into account the short roster and comment accordingly.
And you can get injured in any game. H*ll, if we're worried about getting injured all the time, why don't we just bulldoze the arena and end the program. You can get injured playing some stupid, meaningless buy game too, yet we still play those games.

Don't remember anyone on that team requiring surgery when the season was over, or any injuries just prior to tourney time requiring players to sit out like Mike and Kobe. Charles and Steve were never going to be part of that team. Bass was injured early in the season and Rogers never played. Scott and Robinson had been gone 2 and half months. So the Magnificent 7 had been playing together, building chemistry, getting to know each other's tendencies in their sleep for quite a while. Of course they were banged up some, but we are dam* lucky no one was injured.

What is so funny about it? Please explain.
You think people would get p*ssed about losing a NIT game with 6 scholarship players? Give me a break, posters would recognize the challenging situation and temper their comments and be proud of the team for showing up and playing.
And since when are we so terrified of getting injured that we opt out of playing a game?

I would buy the injury excuse if AG’s teams didn’t underachieve in 2018-2019, 2020-2021, 2021-2022 and just about all of his Alabama tenure

And I said to leave Mali, Brea, and Elvis at home for the NIT.
The bottom line is that nobody got hurt from the 2014-2015 season, we had a da*n good season that year, and that was a team and a year for the ages, a team that we could really be very proud of for overcoming a massive amount of adversity and succeeding.

And “leg-brace” Mike? Leave him at home? Play him on one leg? Risk further damage? That’s delusional. So you’re leaving the injured at home and starting a walk-on with no conceivable PG backup unless you think Blakney had ball-handling skills (as if).
Believe we had a healthy scholarship stud at PG named Scoochie in 2015. Your comparison to that squad is beyond apples and oranges — more like ant hill to Mt. Everest. It was never a numbers argument; it was a health argument.

The thing about journalistic ethics is that if your source tells you something is off the record then you don't repeat it. The way you work a beat is to gain the trust of the people you are covering. Quoting sources when they gave you information off the record is a great way to not earn trust and lose a source. So, it is probable that Jablo knew about this but didn't report it because to do so would be unethical and stupid.
As for the players, sounds like they really played through the pain and toughed it out. Grant and his staff had to keep reinventing the team throughout the year. I think in light of all the hurdles, coming in second and making the semis in the league tournament was a fine accomplishment and they should be proud of their efforts.

Not sure why there was not more depth to the roster this year.
1. One open scholarship. Have not heard an answer on this from UD, Grant, or even this board other than "well maybe someone else would be available" or "other teams do this too"
2. Two left the team (one could have played) that could have played some minutes, did not need them to be an All-American but some minutes would have been nice
3. Zimi and Richard. Again, not looking for Obi and Crutcher. But they could not get on the court.
No secret that I am not the biggest fan of CAG. However, even the biggest CAG supporter cannot deny that he recruited Zimi and Richard, lost two transfers, and had an open scholarship.
I am not even aware of any questions to CAG on the roster (Zimi, Richard, open scholly, transfers) even been asked of CAG
And all we get is an unnamed source asking if CAG will be back. And the reply is yes, he will be back.
And that spurs an entire thread like we are supposed to be excited?
Give me a break.

I second that emotion. And Brea’s injuries might explain why he only attempted 7 free throws all season, when he went to the line 4 times that often a year ago. He was probably shying away from contact, to some degree.

Most on here had no idea the level of injury that Brea was playing with. Anybody who's had shin splints or fractures in the tibia knows how painful that is. Probably you can say the same thing about Blakney; nobody had any idea of what his physical health looked like. But, back to Brea, this could also explain why shooting varied greatly throughout the year. And it definitely explains why he avoided contact.

The real question is how will the coaching staff address the impacts of these surgeries. Both Mali & Brea now look iffy for at least a portion of the non con.

Not sure Mali is, but Koby may be. I've seen 4-6 months recovery time on Koby's surgery, so it's possible he may not be ready for basketball activities until October. Add in conditioning, etc, and I wouldn't be surprised if he missed a portion of the non-con.
The recovery time on each of Mali's surgeries is about 10 weeks, so he would likely be back sometime in mid-late August for conditioning.
Apart from just getting healthy, obviously, it's a lot of time to miss for player development, adjusting to new teammates, etc.

Leave Mike home too then. I said in an earlier post that without Mike we'd still have 6 scholarship players: Holmes, Camara, Blakney, Amzil, Richard, and Zimi. Have Uhl play pg.
Uhl worked his butt off all year being a walk-on, then when the team is short on bodies, they pull the rug out from under Uhl. I don't like that.
It is a NIT game too, who cares if we get beat. This was an opportunity to finish the season off with a postseason game(s) and get some more work for the guys to get ready for next year.
Amzil had some ball handling skills. I doubt teams are full court pressing in the NIT. Uhl can bring the ball up past half court to get the offense started, he is capable of that.

Delusional. No coach in America is going to leave the injured at home, start a walk-on at PG, have no one else capable of playing the point if he fouls out or is hurt, and do so in a tournament that means squat. But then, you’re not a coach, are you?

Many of us are getting tired of this though, when are we going to make the ncaat again? Grant is 1/6, the previous coach was 4/6.

This thread was about players having surgeries. The update was unexpected news about Brea having surgery. Now, like so many other threads, it’s morphed into yet another discussion about Grant not getting the team into the tournament. I’m convinced that someone could start a thread about Holmes farting during an interview, and it would become a discussion about AG being 1 for 6. Ugh.

Every coach is going to leave his injured guys at home.
You tell Uhl to watch his fouls, you tell him that we need him to bring the ball up past half court so he has to stay out of foul trouble. You tell him to not get injured and take it easy too.
Amzil had some ball handling ability. If we have to have a committee get the ball past half court, then we do that. You act like nobody other than Uhl can even dribble the ball, when did all these guys suddenly lose the ability to dribble?

They had no depth
They had an open scholarship
One left the team
Who was in charge when this happened?
Maybe Brea would not have had to play as much. That is the point.

I get your point. Really, I do. But if you are looking for a chat board where everything stays exactly on topic as originally intended by the OP, then you are new to this board. And chat boards in general. I also notice that you did not say that I was wrong.

I’m not addressing whether you’re right or wrong. I’m not new to message boards. I understand how posts can devolve into something different. My point is that there are some who are efforting to turn every post into the same tired argument about AG. Even on a message board, folks have the capacity to color within reasonable proximity of the lines. I don’t think we need to collectively excuse or accept the will of some to be hyper focused on one specific subject regarding UD men’s basketball.

Y'all can discuss AG failure, the NIT, the Jablo articles etc. meanwhile at least 2 players are undergoing some significant surgery ....
Reconstructive ankle surgery (I looked it up rather than spend time talking about what you all are discussing [see above]).
Appears it is different than ankle fixation where due to chronic arthritis some of the joint bones are shaved and joint implants, nails (yes nails) screws, etc are placed. Over time the joint fuses together eliminating pain but severely reducing motion. Obviously limited motion in the ankles does not a BB Player make.
The other form of reconstruction deals with possible replacement of tendons and ligaments (or at least providing something like donor tissue or synthetic materials to strengthen those pieces).
The purpose is to enhance stability of the joint and may require some reshaping of the bones if misaligned, adding plates and screws to maintain some position between all them bones in the joint!
Having a 10 week time between operations does not necessarily mean he will be ready for meaningful rehab 10 weeks after that last one ... it all depends on the amount of work performed on each individual ankle. IIRC Mikesells missed a whole season ... so don't count Mali in or out just yet.
Only time will tell ...

Kobe's issue is a little harder to decipher. One course of action on a tibial stress fracture is removing weight on the leg and plenty of rest. Since he is having surgery he wants to get back in playing form as soon as possible. The length of time with reduced weight bearing and rest can be extensive. He must of chose the more invasive route.
If they are talking about 'rods' that may actually mean a strap laced alongside (outside) the shin bone and held in place with screws or it may mean actual rod like structure inserted in the interior of the bone itself and held by screws to lock the rod in place. I think the internal rod approach is for significant tibia fractures not stress related. Where the location of the stress fracture(s) are is part of the protocol to follow is guess.
Either way not an insignificant procedure and rehab.
And in case anyone out there is wondering ..... NO I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night .... but I do belong to the Priority Club Rewards Program (since about early 90's) and that may count for something!
Is there an actual doctor in the house?

With NIL, the portal, and mid-season transfers you should leave 1 scholly open at all times to keep some dry powder around. At least I would.
That's not to say the rest of the roster shouldn't be balanced and redundant.

If it wasn't for Smith's injury in last years' A10 tournament and all the injuries this year, I suspect would have made it both times.

I have to believe we are pressing hard for Cheeks and another guard at this point. With Mike gone and Mali and Brea up in the air vis a vis multiple extensive surgeries, not to mention Elvis' knee, we need more than an insurance policy, we need starters.

It's so easy to look at the results and judge. The team he brought in this year was a top 25 team from the previous season after game 4 in most analyst's view.
He added another high level, promising recruit. and lost very little from that team. With no significant players leaving, and an expectation that Kaleb, a top 50 recruit, would get his act together and play a significant role.
AG didn't know Mali would hurt both ankles, Elvis would miss significant games, Brea would have stress fractures in both legs before the season etc.
He absolutely has to worry about team chemistry that no one here has to. Listen to the teams that have been successful in the tourney talk about the family, the culture etc. That doesn't just happen with a successful coach. It takes the players buy in to a lot more than the Xs and Os.
Just like 2020, we will never know what this team would have accomplished without the unprecedented, long term injuries this team suffered. 2022 gives us a real good view though of what likely would have happened and then we wouldn't have all these stupid posts.
To judge the 2023 offensive scheme he played or the season results outside of this context is deliberately biased and wrong. Pointing to Kansas losing a guard to a hangnail and turf toe ailments doesn't help your arguments any either.

Ok. What about the underachieving in 2018-2019, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022? (No, you don’t get to just ignore the disaster at the start of the season)
