Nahziah Carter asks for release--will attend prep school
Adam Finkelstein ✔ @AdamFinkelstein
Dayton signee Nahziah Carter tells me he has requested & received his release. Now planning to prep to 2018 but will still consider Dayton.

Well that's no fun. I was sure both Jordans and Naz were going to stay. Especially after Naz's Mom posted the comment about the very good phone call from AG and then posted the pic of AG and NC together. I guess if he does recommit to UD the following year it will slightly help balance the classes, as some mention once in a while.

Here is my guess on this. Naz wants to follow Allen Griffin to Syracuse but Griffin and 'Cuse won't take him unless he plays a year of prep. I hope I'm wrong here and he stays a Flyer but I wouldn't be surprised to watch him end up in Orange, assuming he elevates his stock during the prep year.

There goes the chance to have Jay-Z in the UD section of an NCAA tournament game.

I believe he will only turn 17 this summer so I can't blame him for this move. It might be the best thing for him.

I wanted to keep them all of course but not really a devastating blow. I didn't see him getting much PT next year. Now we know AG for sure has a ship to use. Hope he is (or already was preferably) shopping for PGs.

Good luck, young man!
Hate to see these kids go, but not a big surprise either. Hopefully AG can pull in a couple of impact grad transfers. Would help balance out our classes and give him more than 1 scholarship to work with next year.

This is my hope also. Plus Coach Grant will be more familiar with some of the grad transfers because he was coaching at Bama when they were being recruited in HS. He might even have recruited some of them himself and have a preexisting relationship with them. Somebody needs to go through the entire grad transfer list and see if any of them were recruited by Bama out of HS.

When coaches leave, It's rare to have 5 on the hook. Shear numbers would lean toward multiples staying.
Nothing should surprise us. But when you have 5 and lose 4 of 5, that is a bit alarming. Since Jordan Davis has confirmed his stay, I'm not sure what the rationale is for losing two more other than to throw a dart at a board.

I don't know, I think the fact we're still in the dark regarding the other two, is not a good sign. They have to be weighing negatives vs positives by now and probably have already finished with that phase. You can be sure there are some negatives that they perceive or I think they would've come back with a positive answer about as quick as Jordan Davis.
They are probably waiting on some underground feedback on who else is interested before asking out and losing their safety net of UD not to mention the anger of some of the faithful for just deciding to shop a little more. I don't find any of this a great sign.

Honestly a smart move for the kid. He's a little young for what he was going to face next year. Hopefully he gets better, we want him and he wants us. Now AG can go full bore on bringing some people in for next year.

This one hurts. This kid has huge upside. It's amazing how one little move can cause a landslide. If Indiana doesn't fire their coach, Archie is here and all five recruits are on their way as well. They say timing is everything. Had Archie left next Spring we'd be safe with most if not all players, and AG would still very likely be available and perhaps a higher profile coach available as well.
I hated that we had such a huge class coming in, although I loved the talent, and felt everything would have worked if Archie was staying at least another year. We really screwed the pooch on this one. We'll be lucky to get the two Jordan's at this point. This is going to be a tough next few years. And no, Carter isn't signing next year..he's gone.

Yep, timing is everything and I believe you're right that Carter is never going to be a Flyer.
Something I've not seen mentioned here is how much does AG want these guys taking up his roster spots for four years? If you're a coach taking over a job and incorporating your own system, would you want to be saddled with the previous coaches player(6 freshman at that), for four seasons just to keep your record somewhat respectable or would you rather go through the pains of a down season or two and then having a team with 80 percent of your own players that fit your system?
To take AM's 6 freshman he is putting more pressure on himself to be respectable early and then if things don't keep going up into season 3 and 4 he's going to have a lot of heat. However, if his first 2 seasons are spent filling those 4-6 spots, expectations are low and he's got a nice window to accomplish what he wants.

Maybe it's just the dumb optimist in me, but I'm hopeful that Clutch sees what AG is all about, and considers re-upping his commitment to UD after a year of prep school. A year bigger, stronger, and more mature is a good thing, especially for a slender 17 year old who's hoping to compete at the highest levels of college ball.
Good luck next year, Nahz. Hope to see you in a Flyer uni in 2018-19.

Not sure if you recommended he go to a prep school before the fact but I'm guessing not.
'He wants us' is not the first thing that rolls off my lips when i see his request for his release has been granted. Seems to me a more realistic point of view, based on this particular move by Carter being somewhat delayed, would be that he was done waiting to see who his coaches were going to be.
'Now AG can go full bore'......I dont even know how you make this association but I dont see anything positive about his request and subsequent release. And you seem to see a lot of positives with it.

I hope to see him as well - but I understand and can read between the lines a bit. I think for him this is probably the best decision. I keep trying to ask "what I'd do in this situation". AM was largely a proven winner - and now a cloudy forecast with a new "un-proven" coach, at least at UD. If i felt overwhelmed I'd probably do the same thing especially if I felt maybe not quite up to the acedemic challenge AND thought I had a chance to blow up more. I think unfortunately for UD fans- we're in for a 2 year speed bump ala AM first 2 years.

Red shirt...train/learn from grant Cunningham, Kostas and crew would be better for the kids development would it not? Obviously he wouldn't find out if he'll get that Duke offer but if he really liked Dayton...and vice versa.

Carter is disappointing to me. Wright wasn't as much because I just never thought he was coming after Archie left. Carter looks like he was dramatically under-recruited (I think his next best offer may have been Iona). He looks pretty good on tape (albeit every d1 player looks good on their highlights). I just thought him being under-recruited unlike MW gave us a good chance to keep him. Him prepping makes sense though, I have a gut feeling he's going to end up at a good power 5 the next year. Tough loss but understandable all around.
This stuff has to be expected when there's a coaching change. Unless there's a retirement or clear succession plan that recruits are aware of, this happens. It's about minimizing fallout and staying upright, even if you're not as good for a year or 2. No reason to think that won't happen.

Exactly Jersey Flyer, which is why I've been arguing Grant could be a great hire verses an up-and-coming coach, because we can't afford to go through these wholesale losses of recruiting classes once said coach darts off to the bigger and better coaching spot. We can't keep being crippled every 5-6 years, we lose all momentum that way.
Hopefully, AG can attract some talent immediately this off season and then secure a good recruiting class next off season for 2018.

So if Naz stays, do we get Obi? If that was the case, what a difference. He is a good player, but certainly no POY. Funny how things turn out.
The same can be said for Crutcher and Wright. Wright is a good player but I think we are all happy with who we have.

Agreed, John C. My long-departed mother used to say that everything happens for a reason, and it’s not necessarily our business to know the reason. Looking back, I’m glad things worked out the way they did. Nothing against the guys who chose to go elsewhere, but I’m glad we have the guys who chose to become Flyers.

Just because a Title IX investigation finds him guilty and /or the school suspends him does not mean there is evidence to support a criminal charge.

I have two daughters. I just had a discussion with my oldest about the world and the gray areas that exist. If I had a son, I'd have the same conversation. As a society, we should seek truth. Unfortunately, I feel we are seeking something different in too many cases.
