Philly Special

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) – If you’ve ever played basketball with guys from Philly–and I have, both at UD and for one week every summer for 30 years at Stone Harbor, NJ–they are physically rough, fast moving and even faster trash talking. For example, the playground hoops game of “21” goes by a different name in Philadelphia:

“Animal ball.”

The Red and Chapel Blue got a heaping helping of City of Brotherly Love hospitality from the never-die Hawks and responded by kicking butt and taking names, 94-79. Has there ever been a more deserving Flagrant 2 and ejection than the one called on SJU big man Anthony Finkley for outright clocking Nate with an elbow to the chops? A lot of good it did Saint Joe's, as Santos absolutely ate their lunch in the 2nd half, finishing with 21 points. The Flyer Faithful were the beneficiaries of the heart and grit that the Sons of Anthony Grant displayed while turning a 4-point halftime deficit into an absolute blowout.

And yes, Kobe Elvis was totally justified in hoisting that three pointer as the shot clock was set to expire at the end of the game.

BG’s Flyers famously got sick after eating cheesesteaks when they visited Philly years ago. AG and the guys can get theirs to go and enjoy them on the plane. There is no rest for the weary, as the aptly named Flyers will jet directly to Richmond, to face the VCU Rams in yet another Friday night A-10 Showcase on ESPN2.

Bring it on!
