He may have a better chance of being a 1st round pick this year rather than next year. Itís the right thing to do.

He's got until the end of the month, but my guess is he's gone. This is reportedly a weak draft class, he's a year younger now than he will be next year, and I honestly don't know what more he could do next year to improve his stock. Go get drafted in the 1st round and let us hear UD's name called again.

He could come back and become the greatest Flyer to ever play the game... cementing his UD legacy by becoming the all-time leading scorer (passing Chapman), wining a National Championship (topping May), and being NPOY (equaling Obi).

If all that happens, would he enter the conversation as a lottery pick next year?

That’s a great question. Has a NPOY ever not been a lottery pick?

There are multiple NPOY awards, but going with the Naismith award...

Obi was the most recent NPOY to go in the lottery.
Luka Garza was NPOY and went 52nd overall.
Oscar Tshiebwe was NPOY and went undrafted.
Zach Edey won the last two awards, and most mock drafts project him to be drafted but not inside the lottery.

Passing Chapman, winning a national title and being NPOY would do almost nothing to help his draft stock, however if he accomplished those things in part by becoming a better ball handler, better rebounder and better strength then he would likely improve his draft stock significantly.

There are a lot of factors in play. Namely his draft stock and where he feels confident he will land w/n the draft. He could also take a "bet on myself" approach and hit the draft regardless of his projections and feel like he could make a roster even if he goes undrafted.

Obviously the pluses of the NBA (depending on where he was drafted) is the contract and lifestyle as well as accomplishing what we can assume has been a goal of his for a long time.

The pluses of staying at UD is part of what was mentioned above, getting a degree (if he is on track and cares about his degree) and possibly NIL money that wouldn't be available to him as a pro.

Its that last part that has me wondering. Not many college athletes have true NIL deals. Most are pay to play deals disguised as NIL offerings. Show up at a local community event, sign autographs at a local car dealer, etc... They get some money (maybe even a lot of money, car, etc...). However a few have been able to take their marketability and make sizeable national deals. Catlyn Clark is the most obvious this past season with her national TV spots. I think we can all agree that Deuce's marketability isn't at the level that Clark's was at last season, however we have also seen Jacob Topen in a national TV deal, Armando Bacot and several others. As a second team all american, plus an image that is easily likeable, its easy to see a world where Deuce is the face of college basketball next season. Are there national marketing campaigns worth real money that would be available to him next season as one of the faces of college basketball next winter that wouldn't be available to the typical late 1st round pick? I don't know the answer to that, but I'm assuming his agent, as well as the Dayton 6th are looking into that. How much did Armando Bacot make for that hotel spot? Seems like Deuce could be potentially worth more than Bacot. Is there a national brand that is willing to bet on Deuce/UD next season? They will have some pretty high profile games early on and if Deuce returns they could very well be a top 10 team when they land in Mauii.

anyhoo food for thought. My gut tells me he is off to the NBA and if so I hope he gets drafted round 1 and has an awesome career. He has been one of my favorite Flyers and I wish him nothing but the best. My heart is hoping there is solid reasoning for him to return for one last run that is not only beneficial to him but the school as well.

That would all get him elevated to GOAT Flyer but doesn't really do much for his draft position unless he shows a new level of dominance and/or a new skillset. Front offices only care about how your game will translate to the NBA, and older players will generally be seen as having less projected room to grow.

There are, in fact, multiple awards. However, they seem to agree most of the time:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...he_year_awards

Across 6 awards (Sporting News, AP, Oscar Robertson/USBWA, Naismith, Wooden, NABC/Coaches) - it was unanimous in 14 of the 24 seasons from 2001-24. In the other 10, 8 times one player won 5 of the 6 awards. That includes Obi, who won 5 of the 6 - all but the Sporting News POY award.

The only two seasons that were really contested were:

2015-16: Buddy Hield wins 4 awards; Denzel Valentine wins 2 awards.

2002-03: Real contention here. T.J. Ford wins 3 awards (Sporting News, Naismith, Wooden); David West wins 2 awards (AP, Oscar Robertson/USBWA); Nick Collison wins 1 award (NABC).

Take the draft and the BETTER money now.

Either way I'm good with it ... his decision not mine.
