NEWS: Hamad Mousa, a 6-foot-8 Qatari wing from the NBA Global Academy in Australia, has committed to Dayton in the class of 2024, his NIL agent Bouna Ndiaye told ESPN. Mousa was a major standout at the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Camp in January.

Such an intriguing prospect

Sounds exciting.
However, I'm not used to this new world yet. His commitment was told to ESPN by his "NIL Agent"? I just puked in my mouth a little.

Wait, I take that back. Just looked it up, and Qatar is apparently officially considered part of West Asia, not Europe. So nope, no credit, no Rollo supplied beer.

Saw where he has a 7’-1” wingspan but has played as a guard. There’s a bit of video on his Instagram page and YouTube. Here’s one …

Looks like a bit of discrepancy on the spelling of his last name -- Musa or Mousa. Saw somewhere he has been hailed the best Qatari basketball player/prospect ever. Here's a good article about him. Kind of similar background to Mongolian Mike in that Hamad's father was also a basketball phenom from a country not known for producing top basketball prospects. https://thepeninsulaqatar.com/articl...its-world-team

From Jamie Shaw's writeup of the NBA Basketball Without Borders event held during NBA All-Star weekend this past February:

On3 MVP: PG Hamad Mousa (Qatar)

From the first drill of the camp, Hamad Mousa moved confidently. From the weave drills to the shooting drills, the three-on-two and five-on-four drills, he was vocal and he was consistent. Early on we were able to see that he had skill, the ball was on a string and he had legit size and fluidity. Once the games started, it all clicked for Mousa.

Listed at 6-foot-6, he was hard to take your eyes off in the open floor. He had a creative handle, with a flashy demeanor. The passes were precise as he played one step ahead of the defense, throwing with both hands off the bounce and in the halfcourt. He navigated angles well and he knocked down shots. While his shot pocket is a bit low, the release is soft and consistent and he was able to get it off in a game.
https://www.on3.com/news/top-perform...thout-borders/

Honestly, the writeup gives me Sharavjamts vibes--long, creative, big upside--which isn't a bad profile for a prospect.

Is he ranked anywhere other than madehoops.com? I didn't see him at all on 247 Top 150 and Verbal Commits has him at 3.5 stars.

i realize it is all subjective and the rankings vary but that seems like a very wide variance

Doubt the timing is a coincidence. DaRon comes off the payroll freeing up resources desired by Mousa. Our coaches are hustling and deserve our trust!

Mousa played in the Basketball without Borders event in Noblesville, Ind., in February. Jamie Shaw, of On3.com, named him the MVP of the event.

Rankings might not mean much over all, but I would imagine they mean even less when it comes to international guys. Honestly, it's impressive that there's any pub/hype at all on a guy from Qatar playing in Australia. I think he looks real good, but a wide variance is probably to be expected from a guy like that.

So, this recruit is not the replacement center for DaRon Holmes. This appears to be a recruit of the best player available.

Is this guy intended to be an understudy to upper class men of Santos and Simon? I think not. This guy sounds like he is ready for playing time at the division 1 level as a freshman.

He looks really skinny and young.

He didnít travel from Qatar via Australia just to sit on the bench.

Really not a ton out there on this guy. Seems to be a discrepancy on his height, 6'6'' was what the NBA measured him at earlier in the year. To be honest, after what I have read, I doubt he starts next year. He is very skinny and undersized.

I know nothing about the website Hyde Park references but I will assume that there is something to this addition Hamad Mousa.

In a mock draft of 2025 they say:

Draft Notes
Mousa is a long and wiry 6-8 wing with a high skill level, great basketball IQ and awareness and big time athletic ability. He comes from basketball bloodlines, and it shows.

After a breakout performance at the 2024 Basketball Without Borders event Mousa is making a case for being a first round pick in the 2025 draft.

A few others have posted some articles on Mousa's play and skills ... which are very positive, we will have to wait to see him play to confirm or NOT what is being said today.

Oh! And welcome to the Flyer Family Hamad!

Just remember Matej Svoboda was also listed on future draft boards when we signed him.

Welcome aboard Hamad. If it's true he is a 2025 first round prospect we could have a real fun year next year.

From what I can tell, he does not have the body of a high level D1 player, much less NBA player. Everything about him sounds like Mongo Mike when he signed. I hope he is as good as advertised and his skills translate well to the A10. the main thing now is for him to hit the gym hard, and the cafeteria harder, this summer.

Svoboda did not come in with the same level of praise. While he had the opportunity to play against older players on his club team in the Czech Republic, it wasnít the same level of play that Mousa was exposed to in the NBA Basketball without Borders. Mousa played against some of the top young talent. Heís played against true Blue Chip players. He has been identified as a top player while playing in that talent pool. Of course, nothing is guaranteed in recruiting. But, he has received some lofty praise from basketball people who knew him before yesterday.

Edit: just went back and read something about the 2017 recruiting class. Nazi Carter and McKinley Wright both went elsewhere after originally committing. Jordan Pierce was a bust. Jordan Davis didnít materialize. SB Nation considered Svoboda a potential sleeper in that class.

I guess my point is that the boards miss a lot too, because regardless of who he played against Svoboda was listed as a future NBA draft selection.

I just hate when we anoint people before we know much about them. I hope (and pray) that he is good for this team and if he is great then that's gravy. But if we say he is going to be great and he is only good (or worse), then we will all be disappointed.

Cmon, you know better than that on this board?

Recruited by teams other than UD: No opinion

Committed to A10 school other than UD: overrrated, didnt want him anyway

Committed to UD: Probably one of the best recruits out there, will change the world and cure cancer

Leaves UD: Best of luck, always a Flyer

Leaves UD (but their dad tweets a lot or is controlling): Ultimate sin

I'm just stoked we got a commit honestly. If he pans out, great. If not, oh well.

I obviously have my quibbles with AG, but recruiting talent is not one of them. Dude has put three guys into the NBA at this point.

If you told me 10 years ago that Dayton would have three NBA players at the same time (and not just G-League/two way players that make an appearance now and then but legit contributing NBA players) I would have laughed in your face!

Iím picking up what youíre laying down. I think there is just some excitement about getting a commitment who gives cause for optimism. This is definitely better than Erceg last year!

Sorry hawkoooo, I'm a little confused. Obviously Obi and Toumani are 2 of them. Are you counting DaRon as the 3rd, or am I missing someone? Jalen is a g-leaguer. I'm just clarifying. I'm hoping you mean DaRon and I'm not actually forgetting one of our guys, that would be embarrassing.

It's funny that it's just starting to hit some people how much talent was on the Dayton roster the last 3 seasons while the results were O a10 regular season titles, 0 conf tournament titles and 1 NCAAT win.

Ha-ha. Leave it to zmz to figure out a way to get a dig in at AG in a thread welcoming a new player.

I kept it out of the Daron thread!

Out of nowhere get by AG and staff. Will be fascinating to see how he plays in an upper mid major D-1 conference

Perfect roll of the dice with the scholarships left. No guarantee, but a young, high upside player with real potential.

If nobody is hitting up Qatar Airways for some sponsorship money for the Qatari Flyer, what are we even doing?

Great get by AG, but am I the only one who has a difficult time getting excited about player signings anymore? If this kid ends up being a good player, he'll likely be playing somewhere else the next season. If he doesn't play enough for his liking or isn't used how he likes, he'll be playing somewhere else next season.

Sorry for being a downer, but I just can't get invested into individual players anymore. I'll always root for the Flyers, but not so much the names on the back.

This is a little dramatic.

I don't count Holmes since he didn't go elsewhere he declared for the draft.

Elvis and Brea played for us for three and four years respectively. Same with Zimi. Transfers like Petras happened long before NIL ever came about. I think we've been extremely lucky so far in this regard.

Agree, it just isn't the same. It is a meat market, players come and players go, "family" is pretty much dead.

I agree it is a little dramatic. However, the other side of that coin is as fans we get to cheer for Key and Posh for 1 year. I understand the sentiment. I think it depends on whether players like Allen, Simon, Mousa, Bennett, & Jack stick around for multiple years. Iím not sure we truly know the answer to that yet.

I get nobody can tell another person how to feel but... Dear Lord. Some of the comments reek of self pity. Woe is me; I will never love again.

The world changes. We don't have to like a change but we need to adapt. It may make it easier to accept change to ask yourself if some of those players that you consider family would have left if today's incentive to do so existed when they were at UD. I am pretty comfortable the answer is pretty simple.

There are going to be players that come and leave after 1 or 2 seasons. I hope they any and all transfers are "up" because that should mean they excelled while they are here. I tend think we will be fine overall. The road will be bumpier. I haven't enjoyed the last month or two and unfortunately it may be the new normal.

As long as the players work hard, represent the program and university well, get to the tournament and do well in it, I am all good. Seems like there is a good chance Mousa will help reach those goals. Welcome!

Agree 100%. Here's an idea, if you have a huge problem with this, use your power as a consumer, cancel your season tix, burn your UD gear. It will of course have no effect, but at least it will free up tickets and bandwidth for a new generation of fans who aren't longing for the the "purity" of unpaid players but billion dollar corporate profits. Posting the same things over and over on a message board sure isn't going to do anything. You are barking at the moon. I don't like what has happened either, but I love UD, and I'll support the U and the team because the other alternative...oh that's right there isn't another alternative.

Stop the hype! I just hope he's a good 8th man!

Hamad Mousa G/F 18 NBA Global Academy Qatar / 6-7.5 height, 7í1 wingspan, 8í9.5 standing reach, 182 lbs

"Mousa was one of the break out players from the Indiana BWB during All Star weekend. The Qatari national has a surprisingly American game with a good feel for scoring and creating off the dribble. His jumpshot is a little low, but efficient. he needs to continue to put on strength on his thin frame. Mousa struggled in the game with no points on 0-2 shooting in just 4 minutes. This is a guy to track in future years as the upside is glaring, but probably a year or two away from realizing his potential and really standing out as a prospect."

I don't really get the lack of excitement about this signing. We weren't going to get a 4 year developed Deuce. Anybody remember Obi's first year? Anybody remember Holmes' first year? Those two are NBA first rounders and while their stats were good, the world was not set ablaze. Kids develop. A lot of times the recruiting game is about recognizing upside and developing it, especially at a school where you aren't just cycling McDonald's All Americans through every year. When the article talks about him standing out as a prospect, it is talking about standing out as an NBA prospect, not as a UD wing. I for one am super excited and can't wait to see him play.

I don't think it is a lack of excitement; I think it is more of an eye roll at the thought there was a Top 30 recruit/2025 1st round pick who somehow nobody ever heard of. I hope every kid who comes in is good enough to take a presumptive starter's job away. There's a difference between being happy a kid signed and hopeful he can help right away and buying single sourced hype.

I must have a different version of the site than others because I went back and couldn't really find any over the top hype of this kid. Even the review that Rollo posted is mixed, he was a breakout at BWB and lackluster at the Nike showcase. We'll see what he becomes, I agree that the services miss, high and low, all the time and the board is fans so there's a ton of salt to be taken with the comments on here, but all things being equal I would rather hope that a relatively highly touted kid nobody knows a lot about realizes his "glaring upside" than hope that every 3 star turns into Obi Toppin, especially with our staff's recent development history.

Hamad is also considered a top 30 recruit for the 2024 class.

All speculation at this point - but fingers crossed he lives up to the hype.

Flyer98...I think everyone is excited with Mousa as a recruit.

People just started downplaying the NBADRAFTROOM profile of him that upon closer look, seems to be an overly positive outlier. That website has him as #9 SF in the 2024 recruiting class and on their 2025 NBA Draft board as #18 pick. For a second or two the optimists among us thought he was the highest rated recruit in UD history. In the 23/24 team comparison thread he was placed as a projected starter and improvement over Brea.

That hype above is what some are saying is over the top. I don't think anyone is saying that Mousa isn't a good recruit. Just that he might not be the instant replacement for Obi and Daron. He is probably going to need some development. If he eventually gets there that would be awesome (as long as he is still in a UD uniform when he reaches that potential).

For me I am cynical towards recruiting hype. We've all seen highly touted recruits not pan out. Two of the best players in school history were Obi and Crutcher. Neither of them had any hype whatsoever. Rember last year when Santos committed and this board gave out a collective groan because we had just signed the new Zimi. Then when Petras committed most of us were beside ourselves with what a stud we had just landed...

First, thank you Hawkooo for answering my question that you meant DaRon.

As for the above.....Oh boy, I hope Flyer016 was using his sarcastic voice that didn't come thru (at least for me) in the post.
Respect for a guy that:
1. was one of the problem children for CAG his 1st year as coach (though he seemed to wake up the last what, 3 games, of the season?...a little too little a little too late).
2. was drafted simply by riding the coattails of his brother and the last name, not by anything he showed with any consistency.
3. Played a total of 22 games in the NBA, no starts, and was usually on the 2 way G-League contract (which I think, without re-reading, Hawkooo specifically mentioned as NOT counting towards his comment). So is NBA Champion Title was riding on the coattails of his superior, hard-working teammates.
4. has played 71 games, 10 starts in Euro...so his Euro Champion Title is repeat #3.

Nope. Not doing it for me.

I don't know anything about Hamad. But I'm excited. Sounds like he has a ton of potential. I never expect much from anyone the 1st season, but hoping he works his tail off and his body into great physical shape, fully pays attention to CAG and the staff, and hopefully stays for year 2 and a breakout season that year!!!

Welcome to the family Hamad!!

Article in DDN states that Hamad will join the team later this month. (The three transfers are already on campus). I hope he is here for the Dayton 6th Meet and Greet on the 17th.
