My thought all along is that if Obi can hit 29/30 from 3 point range in a workout he'll get someone's attention and maybe get lucky with someone risking a first round pick. And it's not impossible, he's got a very nice stroke.
If not, get in front of as many teams as possible in order to introduce himself for next year.

And that certain poster would love it if Obi left because he could claim AG ran him off. Hopefully that certain poster is away at summer camp with no access to news.

I wonder how this could work? Could Obi stay in the draft and sign a contingent 2 way contract with a team? Contingent on him not getting drafted by another team? The team that he signs with says we like you but don’t have a second round pick or we don’t want to use one on you. Obviously if thinks he could be a 1st round pick next year he would wait but that is still a big if. Easy for us fans to say wait and be part of something special next year but he could start earning a decent paycheck sooner. We sometimes look at kids and say they are not realistic about their future chances. Maybe he is?

I'll save you the click, Obi is ranked 127 on their 130 man "big board" which means he'd be roughly a 4th round pick if the NBA still had 4 rounds (I'm not sure if they ever did, but I think the NBA draft used to be longer)

Yes, it used to go for several rounds. IIRC, Mike Kanieski was a 6th Round pick in 1982 (of either the Knicks or the Suns).

I would say high probability if he stays healthy he will be drafted next year. He is better than Kostas right now, but doesn’t have name recognition/family potential recognition. I think his draft activity this year plus the 19/20 season changes all that. It also helps he’s playing for AG - a coach who knows what it takes at the next level and can call any NBA Coach at any time and will answer any questions they might have about Obi’s talents.
When Obi comes back for one more year, he will do more to advance Dayton in the eyes of future recruits than any player...probably ever. AG knows that and I’m sure everyone at UD is working to help Obi reach all his pro career goals.

Interesting note on Obi from ESPN’s draft insider today. I hadn’t heard that Obi declined an invite to the G League combine

I'm having a really hard time reading into that. Only scenarios I can come up with is that he has a 2nd round promise he is comfortable with (them why continue with team workouts, and why not hit the combine and see if you can do better?).
Or, he's not planning on staying in the draft and is just trying to get in some team workouts for the direct feedback.
Not saying either of those make a ton of sense...but I'm trying to come up with some kind of reason.

I get the feeling he just doesn't want to go into the G league - which is good news for UD I think - he wants to be a first (or high second round) pick, and the best way to do that is to excel at UD this coming year.
I'm stoked about this coming year. Obi will know what he needs to improve on and will work his butt off to get there.

The only reasons I can think of is because it might hurt his draft stock if he does poorly, or he has some sort of offer from a team, and they do not want him participating in the combine, or he is injured and unable to participate.

My guess...because he and his team of advisors put a plan together to accomplish his goals. And it’s looking more like that goal was to get in front of a handful of teams to get his name out setting up next year after he returns to UD and has a stellar sophomore season.
A handful of G combine players get invited to the NBA combine. He didn’t need to risk not being one of those players this year. He needed to get into the gym of teams and showcase his athleticism and build his brand for next year. Private workouts provided the best plan to do that.
IF this was the plan, they have been working it to perfection. Obi is sitting in a great position to create tons of buzz for next year’s draft and he apprears to be set to carry UD on his journey towards becoming a first round draft pick. It’s a good day to be a Flyer and a great day to be a teammate of Obi Toppin.

I don’t see him in the top 100 in any mock or listing I have found. Given that he doesn’t have any draft stock so the best way for him to get some this year would be to go to the combine and show all teams why the lists are wrong.
Unless he just wants to be making money next year, in which case AG would surely know this and be reacting to it in recruitment, I think he returns for at least one more year. He has the potential to be a first rounder with guaranteed money. Not sure bouncing around overseas and G league gets him there any sooner.

Marysville Flyer: I have been studying this year's NBA draft, not because I have a strong interest in the NBA, but I want to understand Obi's game relative to this year's prospective first-rounders to get a better understanding of his options. If he comes back for one more year and produces at the 20 point/10 rebound level or slightly below, his credentials would be among some of the best in this year's draft. Now, I am not comparing him necessarily to the top ten in this year's draft, but he certainly will compare well to the mid and lower-level first round picks from this year. In fact, given his size and the fact that his game grew so much this past year, I see him as a middle first round pick next year as being almost a lock. I really don't believe we have seen the best of Obi's game; I see more improvement next year. Not to mention, I think the lack of depth this past year makes it very difficult to assess any of the players' true capabilities. I would like to see Obi play 32 minutes this year without the restriction of depth in his game. I think we will be shocked just how good he can be next year...and do not rule out strong national recognition for him.

I agree with this. Last year every player on the floor had to “ manage” their defense because we were so thin in depth. This year we should see a huge step forward in defense from every player because they can play all-out. AG’s MO is to wreck havoc with defense. We haven’t seen that yet, but I believe it’s coming. Not only more pressing-more pressure on the ball, but I think you’ll see Obi and others going for more blocks.

One of the aspects that Obi was looking for in the draft is a guaranteed contract. First rounders have that. What I found out was some second rounders are now getting a guaranteed contract. Last years 31 to 42 draft picks all signed NBA guaranteed contracts. They averaged 3.18 years, $4.5M and $3.26 guaranteed.

First of all, I believe Obi comes back just because it seems to me that is the obvious and best route for him to take. However, does anyone have any numbers as to how many entrants have pulled their names out of the draft by now? Usually a deadline is a formality and I wouldn't expect players to take it to the limit before pulling their names. I mean, what could he possibly be doing on a holiday weekend that would make up his mind one way or another? As obvious as I think the answer to his decision is, I wouldn't expect it to go down to the wire.

On Twitter I've started to see a trickle on names returning over the past week
As far as taking it to the wire I would assume that probably depends if they're scheduling workouts with teams this week (I have no idea what the schedule on those is)

If he pulls his name out, wouldn't "this week" amount to tomorrow only? That would mean to me his mind isn't made up yet and that's scary.

Cumberland from UC just announced he is coming back for his senior season. He’s a good player that I think could be a first rounder next year if he continues to work on his outside shot.
It will be interesting to see how well he plays with Brannen as the new UC coach.

I think it is more likely that a decision has already been made and it just hasn't been made public.

That is not something new, that has been going on for a long while now. It is up to each individual team if they give a 2nd rounder a guaranteed deal.

Not a surprise at all. He wasn’t listed in the top 100 draft eligible players. He simply did what Charles Cooke did a few years back. I’m sure he gained valuable info on what teams liked about his game, and what he needs to work on.

So glad he’s back but I’m also excited to watch him take his game to the next level this season. Obi will be all-in to lead UD this season, but his number one goal is to get his game ready for next year’s draft. I for one support him 100% in this quest. It’s going to be a win-win for both Obi and Flyer Nation.

2 quick points: per UD administration, it is referred to as March 17th, not St. Patrick's Day, and I lost track, did udscott ever pay up?

Does everyone notice that when Charles Cooke declared for the draft that there was not the same angst about his potentially coming back to the university? This clamor only should be a flag to all NBA recruiters of the significance of Obi’s potential impact. Hopefully, throughout the year, we will hear reports of such and such NBA scout is attending the game to watch Obi and, oh by the way, also checking out some other player. Other players will benefit by having eye-balls on their performance.

I would like a little say in the date selected. Now that you are working a real job you may understand.

Charles Cooke was a great player but did not have the "school spirit" Obi has, it's infectious.

Got to coordinate with the Flyer schedule, and now also with Marquette gals schedule. Does Milano's have enough seating?

Bryce Harper graduated HS early, spend 1 year at a Juco then entered the draft. Graduation may not even be a requirement; not sure exactly.
It would probably be a win-win if the NBA had a similar arrangement, leave after HS or Juco and enter the draft and either go straight to the league, or develop in the G league.
Regarding Obi, the benefit of college is that you get a more controlled atmosphere to develop. Granted, you get less time, and there is school work involved, but he knows what he's walking into and who is working with him. Go the G league route, and its anybody's guess, unless he goes un-drafted, which is even worse. He also gets a chance to make a "name" for himself nationally. If UD goes out and dominates in Mauii, and Obi makes a handful of highlight reel plays, he'll quickly become appointment television for the basketball junkies. Keep improving as he did last year and he'll find his name on wooden watches and other national award lists. Zion Williamson likely would have been a top 5 pick coming out of HS if he has that option, so going #1 this year isn't going to increase his NBA paycheck all that much. However, becoming the face of college basketball increased his brand awareness a ton and will lead to much larger endorsement deals over the next few months than he could have garnered a year ago. I honestly think Obi has the chance to become something on the level of Adam Morrison or Steph Curry on the college basketball scene. Obviously those guys had very different NBA careers, and Obi is a long ways away from being a lottery pick like they were, but both were the players the "cool kids" were talking about, the ones that you if you knew and watched them play their sophomore seasons then you truely were a basketball junkie, not just some dude who turns up in march and roots for kentucky or Duke.

Think he'll be back for his junior season?
