Looks like Ohio St got a good one. Beat #1 MSU. They’ve been trash

The last few years. Wonder if Holtmann will recruit mainly Ohio or national like Matta

The team looks totally different under Holtmann. The last few years under Matta they have had no chemistry whatsoever. I think their recruiting will be more midwest centric but with a few nationals thrown in.

Mediocre? OSU is loaded with talent and upperclassmen. They will be a top 5 B10 team if not better. Matta made them look mediocre.

Matta took Ohio State to the National Championship game. Players on that team are very loyal to him.

Here is an interesting article explaining why Matta was fired.

Agree. I didn't like Matta when he was at X and when he first got to OSU but read enough about him to start to like him but the way his teams played the last few years was head scratching. He had talent but they has no sense of team.

Hopefully they play harder under Holtmann. There was lots of loafing under Matta. Matta is a great coach though, I do not know why there was so much loafing sometimes. His Xavier teams did not loaf. He seems like a great guy too.

And I think Holtmann is a good coach, he will do well there.

They have Dackich kid who was a former walk on at Michigan earning major minutes for the first time in his career as the backup PG. This was team picked 11th in the Big 10. Far from loaded with talent

Holtmann's a good coach for sure. He's young. And driven. I concur that Ohio State made a very good hire.

The problem with Thad was not that he wasn't a great coach. He was a great coach. Not one that I cared for particularly, though I concede, we, as Flyer fans, probably do owe the man a debt of gratitude for his willingness to be a mentor and give Archie advice which helped propel our recent success.

But even great coaches have to put in the work to stay great. That means on the recruiting trail, in the film room, and also just working at relationships with the guys on his team. That article does a good job of providing evidence which suggests he just wasn't working as hard particularly on the recruiting trail. Much of this could be due to health as been widely speculated. The fact that Ohio State had so many transfers suggests to me he also wasn't working as hard at the relationship building.

But Thad's definitely a guy that I could see recharging, getting back into the game, and having a lot of success again. He's not that old. Or it could go the other way -- he's got a championship, and made enough money to stay retired if health doesn't allow, or if the fire just isn't there any more.

Any one know what he's been up to? Is he working as an analyst somewhere?

They have 3 upperclassmen who were top 100 recruits. One of them went off against MSU.

Of the Freshmen they play, two are top 100 and one was top 150. They add to that a couple of 3 stars off the bench along with Dakich who is a Sr. Top that off with Jackson who was a top 25 JC recruit.

They have talent. Lots of it.

And for those using this success against AG, this really just proves that nobody expects much success in year 1. Even with the talent and experience they have, the other Big 10 coaches thought it would take longer to get everything to come together. Holtmann is a hell of a coach. He wasn't an option for us.

We are short on talent and shorter on experience.

You're judging their team based on a senior walk-on's playing time and preseason predictions? I guess that means I'm right...

How about these stats:

Tate: Starter every game last 3 seasons...1313 career points.
Jackson: junior and Jr College All-American, 13.5 pts and 81% FTs this season.
Williams: senior, 921 pts, soon to cross 1000. 46% FGs and 46% 3's
Diop: Senior, 940 career points, would be well over 1000 but only played 9 games as a junior. Good chance of being B10 POY.
Wesson: freshman 2017 Mr Basketball for Ohio, averaging 11.5 pts
Potter: soph who started 12 games as freshman...shoots 63% FGs for career.
Jallow: freshman started 10/17 games this season.

The OSU basketball team underachieved for Matta IMRO because of his health. Matta could always recruit. Had a couple players not gone pro early or had Diop not been injured last year, Matta would still be their coach. Regardless, this team is loaded. All they needed was an energetic (healthy) coach...and they got one.

Polls just came out and OSU is #29. Give them a week to capitalize on the MSU win and they'll keep climbing.

His health isn't in good shape. He had botched back surgery that left him in bad shape physically
