UD at VALPO
Down 7-3, see the pass defense is still a work in progress.

Dayton up at the half 20-14. Came alive in the second quarter. They were down 14-3.

Now down 11, not enough offense to make up for the defense. We are young and it shows at times. Quarter to go, lets see what happens

Hard to watch. Terrible defense and no run game. Turn out the lights.

Who pays for this?
Getting gashed by a 1-5 team?

The Chamberlin era has been passable if not unremarkable. What’s the succession plan? He’s in his mid-60’s right? I think it’s time.

Would tend to agree, passable but not what it was. We do play a lot of red-shirt freshmen and freshmen, but we play second fiddle to SDU most of the time and this year .500 may be a struggle. Butler and the Hatters are winable, Wildcats maybe not. Went to the Blue hose and Red Foxes games, defense was lacking and offense, while good against the Hose, was stale against Marist. Giving up 45 against Valpo is just plain poor.

Agree that it’s time. We’ve really been only fair to middlin’ over the past several seasons, and that’s a steep drop from the spectacular success of Kelly and all the way back to Carter. I’m not looking to start something here, but Chamberlain’s recruiting is at least partly to blame. We’re often less quick, less resourceful, just plain less athletic. Maybe it’s academic requirements or the way needs-based tuition assistance is given, but for some reason he brings very few black athletes into the fold — typically six or eight on a 100-man roster. Seems to me that’s part of his recruitment problem.

I counted 8 black players, for what it’s worth, and 27 on USD. Talent comes in all colors; it would seem UD is lacking.

Also for what it’s worth, no other Pioneer football team has fewer than 15 (Drake) black players. Presbyterian is predominantly black (67 players), while Stetson and Marist have 40-plus players of color. Talent does come in all colors, and Dayton needs to do a better job of diversifying its roster. It’s not a “quota” thing; it’s about recruiting better players, particularly at the skill positions. Yeah, UD is lacking.

I think UD's most fertile recruiting grounds is "God's country," the overwhelmingly catholic, German area north of Dayton (Where Ryan Mikesell hails from). That is a very white area.

Then for the good of the program, they need to cast a wider net. I do know they have players from the Cincy/Columbus/Cleveland area as well as several from out of state, so they can do better.

There is a alum with head coaching experience and a Super Bowl ring. Maybe we could bring him in as an assistant and groom him to succeed Chamberlain.

Maybe the reason UD has very few black players is it's hard to recruit black players when you only have 3 or 4 existing black players on the roster. Also, last season we didn't have 1 black assistant head coach.

As far as recruiting top players. UD is very expensive. The players are paying between $35k to $40k per season depending on how big their academic scholarship is. I'm not sure the cost of other PFL schools. All are private schools with the exception of Morehead.

the net can't get much wider

Check the roster...there are no less than 65 out-of-state players on the 118-man roster...including 1 from California, 1 from Arizona and a boatload from Illinois and Pennsylvania.

I did. I was responding to someone who said the bulk of our recruits were from St. Marys and other mostly white rural communities. My “wider net” reference is to recruiting more minorities.

It is not easy for Chamberlain to recruit in my opinion. UD education second to none. Campus is absolutely fabulous. Weight room is first class. Training room is fabulous. The culture that Chamberlain creates with the football team is phenomenal. The players truly have a "brotherhood". But, Welcome Stadium is a dump. They don't even brand it before a UD game save for 1 or 2 banners. Most players had a nicer locker room at their high school. It would not take much money to renovate the locker room. And then there is the cost of attendance. These players put in a helluva lot of time for zero money.

The focus of the athletic department seems to be getting to a championship level in all A10 sports. Obviously the Pioneer league is not the A10.
I don’t know who is at fault but the football program is not anywhere close to these aspirations anymore. Is it because of a coach that is behind the times? Is it a lack of resources? Is it the challenge of recruiting players who can afford UD’s tuition?
Not sure what it is but questions need to be asked. The biggest question of all: Is UD football even needed anymore? I think it is but if the administration answers that with an emphatic yes, then changes are needed.

Winning
in the University of Dayton Football program is optional. It is nice when it happens but hardly required by anyone. It is sort of a Club sport at UD.
