In my opinion, they deserve to be higher. With that group of athletic and experienced players, they could compete with anyone today.

TommyGola: I agree Rhode Island will be a tough out in the tournament because of all those guards. I think Andy Katz has them ranked 12th overall; much more in line with where they should be ranked imo

Had to look for this thread. Wondered if anyone was watching Duquesne at no. 24 Rhode Island. The Dukes have a surprising 12 point lead over the Rams 33-23 with 18:00 to go.
Hurley is going to lose it at some point.

Not sure how Duquesne could have even been competitive. Virtually impossible for a 1st year coach to exceed expectations

St. John's takes down a Top 5 team for the 2nd time in a week. Wonder how long it'll be before we see talking heads touting a team that's currently 12-13 and last in the BE for NCAA consideration because they're "gaining steam"?

If St. John's only loses 2 more games before the tournament and ends with a record of 19-15, with wins over 2 top 5 teams, they may actually make it in the NCAA tourney bc of those strength of victories.
2 things to take away from this:
1) UD needs the A-10 to be vastly improved to allow for some losses to be offset by beating top 25-50 teams in conference OR schedule tougher OOC (see early season tournament next season)
2) I don't agree with Lunardi often, but I'm completely on board with his belief that all at-large teams MUST be AT LEAST .500 in conference to be eligible for the NCAA tournament. Those under.500 teams should go to NIT

That seems reasonable.
I could see them getting in with 1 or 2 more losses, but I do not think they would get that sort of p5 preferential treatment. A 16-14 or 15-15 regular season record would cause a lot of complaints. Even a 17-13 regular season record would cause complaints.
I do not think they will pull this off, I have seen them play, I was not overly impressed, but they are not too bad, I just think that they will come up a little short, they are certainly a streaky team though.
17-13 rpi 50 sos 6
16-14 rpi 56 sos 6
15-15 rpi 67 sos 6

I haven't followed ST. Johns but I did watch the end of their win over Duke because seein Duke lose always makes me happy.
It just goes to show that the separation between teams is not great as they appear sometimes. The Flyers are 8th in the A10 at 5-6. Win those 2 games vs UMass (2 pt loss at home and an OT loss on the road) and they are 7-4 and have they are tied for 3rd with the tie breaker over the other 2 teams with the same record. That would get them a double bye at the A10 tourney. However, they are also 2 games from the bottom and having to play in DC on Wednesday.

Wright State dropped 2 more games recently, Cleveland State and Milwaukee, so no at large NIT bid for them.
I suppose that they could not finish in 1st in the HL and also lose in the HLT, and they would get neither the NCAAT nor the NIT.

They still have a shot at the regular season championship, and #1 seed in the HLT. Trail NKU by one, have NKU next at home. Win that and they have tiebreaker, would be 2-0 against NKU. Of course they would have to win out, CSU and IUPUI at home (doable) and at ILL Chicago (tough one).

UD & Wright St aren't rivals.
Since they are no threat to UD, would Flyer fans want to see the Raiders in the NCAA tournament this year?

Well one drawback is we would have to listen to the"bring back the Gem
City Jam" nonsense again, and UD posters would be crying in their beer about the Flyers not making the Dance and WSU dancing.

URI at the Bonnies is a great match up of strong backcourts and is going back and forth as expected. Hoping to see the Bonnies give URI its first A10 loss and snap the Ram’s 16 game winning streak.

If you want more frustration, look no further than #4 Xavier at home against #3 Villanova. X could end up as a 1 seed, 2 seed at worst most likely.

Be careful of the Bonnies. When we played them Jalen Adams must have been injured, as he was not at the top of his game. He is back and just watch those Bonnies. Jalen Adams is a complete stud when he is healthy.

Yes, it was reported before the Bonnies game that Jalen was not 100%. His game showed it, as he was a mere shell of his performance against the Flyers last year. My understanding is he is now healthy...and is playing like it. If I had my choice of point guards across the country, he is one of my top three, no doubt.

Indiana beats Iowa to go to 9-7 in conference, which is better than last year at 7-11. Archie is taking hold. I was reading the Reds blog, which turned into a IU blog, and believe it or not, an Archie love fest. The IU fans are starting to love Archie.

And if they had lost to Iowa, which they nearly did after blowing an 11 point lead late, it wouldn't be quite the love fest. Same here, if we had pulled out a couple games that we ended up losing, the tone of this board would be a fair amount better.

Agree that later than last second shot at UMASS caused some to get really excited.

B1G is 6th ranked RPI conference, which if you're doing the math, is the worst among the P5+BE. Last year, B1G was 4th.
.500 season and mid-table finish is nothing to write home about at Indiana.
They have won 4 straight since running through 3 straight losses at the hands of Purdue, Michigan St., and Ohio St. Indiana will be just fine.
What's funniest is how Minnesota was ranked #12 at one point this year. They are currently 3-12 in the B1G.

You mean the pre-season projections were wrong??? Athlon had them second in the Big 10, Lindy's had them third, and Street & Smith had them fourth. All had them ranked in the Top 25.

And I would guess that Minnesota fans are saying that their team this year did not meet expectations.
Perhaps the preseason rankings were correct, and the team underachieved.

LaSalle and URI close for most of the game but with a little more than a minute to go URI up by 3. LaSalle controlling the boards but with 17 turnovers.

If you wonder about the value of coaching that last possession down 3 with about 20 seconds left is why it matters

Seton Hall/ Providence at the Dunk - postponed in the middle of the second half due to condensation on the floor. Yikes.

This should be a forfeit. According to reports a forfeit was never considered under the "must provide safe environment" clause because the failure was with the Dunk facility, not Providence. Huh? If that's where Providence plays their home games, it's Providence's responsibility.

The 'safe environment' clause you quote has more to do with security than anything else. If fans are chucking trash on the court, or fights are occurring in the stands and/or on the court, the officials have the authority to send everyone to the locker rooms and forfeit the game. I deal with slippery courts every year, especially when the weather flips temps like last week...30F one day, 75 the next...schools don't adjust their boilers and the next thing you know, the floors are a mess. I did a varsity game last week where the custodian had to dry mop the corners at every dead ball...and we gave him all the time needed to make it safe. No talk of forfeits...just mop, mop, mop...

So a Seton Hall player injured his ankle as a result of the court and is out at least a weak. The game picks up on Providence's campus today with only students and faculty allowed
Seems like a raw deal for Seton Hall

Since my kids went to OSU, I became an OSU fan (very, very distant to our Flyers). I actually became tolerant of Matta although he was not getting the job done. I am so glad Archie didn't end up at OSU. I would have had a real hard time not rooting against them. I was not a BK fan so I disliked Indiana. Still do now.

Rhode Island is at home playing St Joe on senior night. Quiet student section right now as St Joe is up at the half 35-16. Rhode Island is shooting 19% and 6.7% for 3s.
May be an interesting second half.

They are just letting them shoot 3s and they're not hitting any. It is the same strategy people used against our BG teams.

Last Rhody team to go undefeated at home was in 1944. This team could've done that...so in addition to NCAA seeding there was something to play for.

Davidson and St. Bony heading to second overtime, one of the best games I have seen all year. So far Aldridge has 43 points and Adams 34 for the Bonnies
And to think, the Flyers beat both of these teams who are currently battling for second place in the A-10
EDIT- Now 100 - 100, heading for a 3rd OT. If your still up, game is on CBS Sports Network.

Bonnys win 117-113 in 3 OT
I am sure Sir Figgie can answer this, but in college basketball has there ever been 3 guys on one team score over 30 points in one game? 5 guys total did as Aldridge had 45 and Grady 39 for Davidson.

According to ESPN's SportCenter the Bonnies are the 1st D-1 team in the last 20 seasons to have three 30-point scorers in a game.

IU came back to tie it at 46, then Rutgers went back up by 3.
And if I'm reading the conference records correctly, IU is the #6 seed in the Big (four)Te(e)n tourney, correct?

You know, we've commiserated about how the A10 is down this year (and it is). But the B1G isn't exactly lighting it up this year either, if a team that's 16-14 overall and 9-9 in-con is the 6th best team in the league. They might possibly get no more than 5 bids this year. Hard to justify more than that, unless Penn State plays its way into a nod.

Agree, Maryland lost today to Wisconsin, they had a chance to maybe play their way in.

Rutgers just upset Indiana to become the first 14 seed to advance to the B1G quarterfinals. Good for them.
