Thumbs down McCafferty trophy

The ultimate insult by the thugs at norwood. The trophy that the two schools battled for for years is up for auction on EBTH online. Apparently, the athletic dept must no longer have any respect for the rivalry that was. Talk about “no respect” which was their mantra for so many years.

It is the athletic department selling it - right now at $626

https://www.ebth.com/items/9783888-2...caferty-trophy

Ironically it is currently the most expensive item in their auction by a factor of 2.
(for any X fans that means it is more than double the price of anything else)

In other news, it looks like the Xavier-Butler commemorative water fountain trophy is also up for sale from an anonymous seller. Asking price, $120. Condition: Heavily refurbished.

I have to admit that I have never gotten into the rivalry of Dayton versus Xavier. When I attended UD in the late sixties and early seventies Xavier was just another guaranteed win on the UD schedule. In short they stunk and I always thought UD played them as a favor.

Nevertheless I must say that Xavier putting some of the items it has on sale is pure bush league. They must have some junk storage room for putting such things as the McCafferty Trophy or they could just send it to UD to dispose of it as they wished. But even more bush league is the auctioning off of their NIT Championship Banner. This could not be taking up much space and is a very real part of their sports history regardless that it was 60 years ago. In fact it is the only post season tournament that they ever won and the fact is they have never made the NCAA final four.

Xavier seems to take more pride in being a number one seed in the NCAA tournament that actually winning anything.

The low bidding amounts for their historic items show just how little respect the school alumni have for their school. One would have expected higher bids just as a way of making a monetary contribution to the school.

In the case of the NIT banner is it possible they have a more modern banner for it and they are auctioning off the old one? As a high school AD I know we are in the process of updating our gym banners and are thinking of running an auction of our old out of style ones.

Trophy

Shouldn't any funds from the sale be split, since it is a trophy between both Dayton and Xavier? Just saying.

The bidding is up to a whopping $676, with only 2 days to go. I guess that’s the value their fan base places on a century of history between the two schools. Typical “new money” attitude.

If that was our version of the trophy, I might pay that much. I was fully prepared to shell-out a couple hundred bucks for my old seat from The Arena, but then UD decided to scrap them all because of the “hazardous materials” issue. And if I had deeper pockets, I might be tempted to try to get the Eggsheads version at the last minute, just for the satisfaction of being able to say “I own you, B!+ch!” But as it is, no, I’m not going to give them any of my hard-earned money.

I can honestly say I gave it a couple of thoughts. There are only two in existence, UD would have one and a UD fan would have the other. It is a very real part of UD basketball history - even if it was X's version of it.

It's pretty big - I have nowhere to put something like that...

frankly, it's embarrassing (for them)...if you click on the link and look at the photos the trophy is in disrepair, it's mentioned in the comments so I clicked thru the photos. Getting $600 for it is a steal for them because it's obviously been stuffed in storage somewhere. So they're getting rid of probably paying for storage (it's on a mover's cart) and making $600.

Sad a series that thought enough to name a trophy after 2 of their respective legendary coaches (before my time) winds up in the "you've got junk" situation but leave it to X to embarrass themselves....strange school.

Revisionist history. “If we don’t admit that our program existed before Bob Staak became coach, then it didn’t really exist.” I haven’t been to the SchmidtHouse in about 40 years, but I’m guessing they have almost no basketball paraphernalia of any kind in that place. And I haven’t been to the Floormat Fieldhouse in over 15 years, but I bet they have no references to McCaffterty, Steve Thomas, or any of their legends from the pre-TV days. Almost bizzarro.

I'm a little confused. Is there only one trophy and it was kept whoever won it last? It is not there's to sell! The Stanley Cup does not belong to Vegas and cannot sell it for any price tho they are in possession of it. An extreme example I know but you get the correlation.

There are 2...each school has 1...seems like they do not want to ever play UD again IMO, otherwise, why sell the trophy?

Even though this is Xavier's "copy" of the trophy, it is also the definition of Xavier basketball, post-Gillen, in a nutshell.

I just wonder if it is at all common for colleges to sell trophies like this. It generates (in this case) no appreciable revenue. Selling a trophy like this in this type of auction just seems like a total lack of respect of the history of your own program. If the Athletic Department wants to auction it off to alumni for charity, I could see that - maybe. I think this speaks volumes about the athletic program and the school in general - obviously not in a good way.

Unfortunately items like this, that are no longer on display, will be sold off as Universities and High Schools across the country don't need closets of things they aren't using. Not a one at X cares about a trophy that has been collecting dust in a room for years and isn't out for the public to see. They are too busy hanging NCAA Sweet 16 and E8 banners to worry about a defunct rivalry. Hate to say it, but they have moved on regardless of UD fan's opinion. Their players, their coaches, and their fans proved their worth on the court and unfortunately for us UD fans, we want another crack at them at their place.

I will say that there are plenty of local high schools with storage areas full of trophies they no longer display, quite simply because their cases aren't big enough. I coached a practice in my HS gym tonight and took a look in the case when I went by. If it isn't a conference championship, regional, district, etc...it isn't in there. I will have to take a look closer at what they decided to keep. Wayne HS used to have a huge storage room packed with hardware that they don't display.
