Oh my, thanks Smitty. That was fun to watch. Can you imagine how good he could have been had he been 6'8" instead of 6'4"? That was a great performance. Those moves let all of us know why they called him "Velvet!"

Funny isn't it. We've had 6'8 to 6'11 guys that struggle to get the ball into the basket from point blank range since the 2 giants left from Purnell's last years, and this guy at 6'4 puts it just about every time with 3 bigs in there to defend him.
The guy was so unpredictable as to how he was going to put it in, like a pitcher keeping batters off balance with off speed and breaking stuff. Our bigs need to learn a couple different ways to put the ball into the hoop when it's there to keep it from getting stuffed back in their faces.

Velvet poisoned the well for so many players that have followed him. For us fans that remember him, there simply has been no equal. He was the UD version of Larry Bird. He found ways to get the ball in the basket when it simply didn't look possible. He was just a baller. He was so comfortable with the ball in his hands. While I just don't see anyone surpassing his play, I desperately wish that we could find someone who could at least stand in his shadow.

Freaky Deaky
No chest thumpin or primal screams -- just a smile after every basket.

The little runts. Basically 4 guards and Ed Young who was listed at 6'8.

True... but he was heard asking "who is your all-american?" to Waymon Tisdale. You can take the player out of Brooklyn but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the player!

Don't know if anyone read the comments on the video, but Velvet's son commented because it was the first time he'd ever seen video of his father play. That was cool.

My favorite Dayton team of all time!
My neighbor dated Dan Cristie, but as a kid I really liked Larry Schellenbeger.
Jeff Zern went to Fairmont if I'm not mistaken, local kid. I grew up in Kettering.
Tony was amazing.
Chap was the best Flyer of all time and Goodwin...forget..about...it. Put him on the line and it was a free two points.
Amazing run.....may never happen again in my lifetime, but I keep dreaming....
I became a lifelong Flyer fan because of that '84 team. I got season tickets in 1994...section 309 until this season. This is my first season in the lower arena.
GO FLYERS!

We may never see another Velvet, but I am convinced we'll see another run. It's tough to see it as we are so easily disappointed as fans, but UD has the resources and location to put together a team to make a run. Ohio is now one of the top basketball states in the country. There will always be players that want to stay close to home. OSU can't and won't get everyone. This isn't football. Players can look at rosters. Plus, the information age helps the less than prime time schools. Players in the A10 are on TV and get noticed more regularly today than 20 years ago. While I have huge concerns about this team's defense, we could make a run this year. It CAN happen.
