Cattran Qualifies
Ashley Cattran is selected to participate in this weekend's NCAA championships in the 800m in College Station, Texas. She is number 16 of 17 accepted. Her time from this weekend just squeeked her in. The girl from Charlotte that finished a tenth of a second behind her on Saturday at Notre Dame and 3 hundredths of a second behind her in the A-10 championships was not selected. That is cutting it close. Way to go Ashley.

Most likely they will run two heats of prelims at 6:00 PM CDT Friday. Usually, the top 2 in each heat followed by the next 4 fastest times qualify for an 8 person final - scheduled at 6:20 PM CDT Saturday. The heat sheets are to be posted on Thursday - pending any late scratches.

Huge step for women's track program...
Great find, I am extremely pleased for Ashley to have made the field. Hopefully she can shave a bit more time and surprise us all this weekend.

3/13/09 Update - Looks like they are now running 3 heats - top 2 from each heat plus next fastest 2 qualify for finals. It might take 2:05 to make the finals.

Cattran finishes 12th
Ashley does a 2:07.43 and finishes 4th in her heat and 12th overall in the prelims. It took a 2:05.91 to move to tomorrow's final out of her heat. From watching it on all-access, it looked like she went out fairly conservative but was never able to make up much ground - something that is hard to do at this level. Still, for someone who knocked 10 seconds off her PR in the last 3 1/2 months, missing the finals by about a second and a half is pretty solid.

I think that finishing 12 in the NCAAs the first year you run an event is pretty amazing. It will be interesting to see how much she can improve in the future. And, her achievements will probably give other flyer tracksters some extra motivation

School Record for 1500
Running her first 1500 ever, Cattran set a new school record yesterday. Previous record was held by Kara Storage - who I might add competed last summer in the US Olympic Trials. Traditionally a 400 runner, Cattran set numerous school records this spring in the 800. So what is her best event? Who knows. Perhaps any event she runs!
