20-21 OOC Schedule

Thought it might be worth this topic having a stand-alone thread. It looks like right now the only game we know with absolute certainty is:

Miss St. (N) - 12/12/20

As someone pointed out in another thread even the Myrtle (turned Orlando) tournament is up in the air, as we may pull out in order to secure better win opportunities elsewhere. The A10/MWC challenge has been pushed back a year, so we know the @Nevada game is gone.

Sources: All teams involved in one of Orlando's eight early season college basketball events could potentially play as many as FIVE total games during their extended time in Florida. Additional games will be an option.

as I previously stated, I see a scenario where assuming these are all ESPN run events, which I believe they are, A champion of champions tournament where the winners of the eight events play in another tournament. If you are not one of those eight teams, I definitely see a scenario where you just play two more games someplace in Orlando while you are down there. Finally, I would expect many of these games that would normally be on ESPN channels to be moved to ESPN plus. Lots of college football inventory will be available on the Friday after Thanksgiving, as well as that Saturday. so, the way I see things playing out for the Flyers is… One exempt tournament, Myrtle Beach or whatever, in Orlando, three games. two or three more games among the many teams down in Orlando following that tournament. Finally, Mississippi State on the 12.

UD stands today on the shoulder of giants (of past and present UD fans). IMO UD is being talked about/included because we were to be in the ESPN Myrtle Beach tourney.

Lets keep supporting, by going to, the ESPN tournaments ... if we can. OK we may not be able to due to Covid this year. :-(

Arizona and Saint John out of the preseason NIT. The cancellations/withdrawals are coming fast. i’m wondering if all conferences are just leaning towards starting with the conference schedule and at least get that in?

I’m pretty sure we left the Myrtle Beach tournament to be part of a much better bubble pod in Atlanta which will be part of the game against Miss. St.

I think you’ll consider it a trade up when announced.

See the Holiday Hoopsgiving thread.

I think this will give us a really good noncon, but I wish we'd get an Ohio bubble. That would be really fun, and it's starting to look like this is the only sort of chance we have at anything of the sort.

Not entirely out of the question yet. Let's say Atlanta gives us five games, (which I think is expecting a lot given we only have one at the moment) that still leaves us with three to four possible non conference games. We could still set up a local bubble at UD Arena or somewhere else local with the likes of UC/X/NKU, etc. I'm guessing UC/X will want to keep their rivalry alive if at all possible so they should be more than willing to participate.

How about the talk of the Louisville bubble. is that something we might be able to get in on?

Headed to Sioux Falls

Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein

Source: Dayton is headed to Sioux Falls to replace Duke at the Sanford Pentagon. Rest of field includes West Virginia, Ohio State, Creighton, Memphis, Utah, Wichita State, and Texas A&M.

Awesome job by Neil Sullivan, Anthony Grant and crew.

Dropping Myrtle Beach for this... Whoa

Can we say that finally the Flyers are "running with the big dogs?" This is a great lineup of teams. We may be on the verge of becoming another Gonzaga.

The Sanford Pentagon organizers aren't stupid. They saw a chance to upgrade the field by booting Duke and picking up the third ranked Flyers.

The Pentagon only holds 3,200, but does not matter these days, great floor and facility.

Only if we win. It certainly is an opportunity. We need a showing in this tourney like last seasons Maui. This Flyer team will have to prove the press wrong several times over to get respect.

Go Flyers!!

All you can ask ... is to get an opportunity ... UD is getting what we ALL want. We need to grab it and win!

Yes we moved from one ESPN tourney (weak Myrtle Beach) to ESPN Battle4Atlantis (awesome). Battle 4 Atlantis was speculated that UD would go in 2022. Awesome to get in earlier ... Exempt games ... Maui 2019, Battle4Atlantis 2020 ... who could ask for anything more!!!

I hope the NCAA temporarily waives the rule that you can only attend any given MTE once in a four year period so they can actually do Atlantis in 2021 if that rumor is true. Atlantis is an awesome resort and I want an excuse to go back.

I concur this is a unique opportunity that appears to be working in our favor and would not have happened were it not for the pandemic.

But we can't lose sight of the havoc the Covid 19 could wreak on those ambitious schedules.

What I would ask more is that everyone stays healthy or we could be shut down again in a heartbeat.

Sounds like technically this isn't the Battle 4 Atlantis so we would still be eligible to play in 2021

https://balldurham.com/2020/09/17/du...020-21-season/

The ‘Battle 4 Atlantis’ will not be played this year because the location holding these teams will not be in the Bahamas.

The event will take place at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but the event currently does not have a name. Perhaps the first-ever ‘Battle 4 South Dakota’ or ‘Battle 4 Sioux Falls’ would work, but we will leave that decision up to someone else.

We played in Atlantis in 2018, so wouldn't the first year we could go back be 2022?

Yes the speculation was UD was going to be asked to the 2022 Battle for Atlantis in the Bahamas.

That Tournament games, SMU, Ole Miss, and Miss. St. makes six quality non conference games. They are limited to 27 games this year so 6+18 conference games means only 3 games unknown at this time. Even if all 3 are “buy” games against lesser opponents, this will be one of the most difficult schedules UD has ever had.

Where is UD2? He has to be extremely happy!

What good are buy games if no one is in the stands.

UD is doing the right thing - they are getting as many quality games as possible - Win those and go for that number 1 seed again (first time).

I gave up trying to keep track of all this, lol...I will just wait and see what, if any, games are even played, if somebody tests positive, then all bets are off...let's just get a vaccine and get back to normal...I don't think it's fair to place a lot of weight on this year in the midst of all this craziness.

Actually, that Louisville field doesn't look half bad. Duquesne and Greensboro were both top-100 NET / KenPom teams last year and return a lot. Winthrop won the Big South regular season and tournament titles last spring before everything shut down. And of course, Louisville is Louisville.

I hate to bring it back to politics, but I have one concern about potential fallout and scheduling as a result of Sioux Falls. Right now, the governor is “advising “people to quarantine when leaving a state whose positivity rate is 15% or higher for two weeks. South Dakota is currently at 23%. I have a hard time believing that the two Ohio programs participating in the tournament, one of whom has an alum Who just so happens to be the lieutenant governor, would not follow this “advice. “ Translation, the tournament ends on that Friday. Our game in Atlanta is set for December 12. I can’t see them having another game in the interim. That’s a long time to go without playing. that would also mean leaving for Atlanta the day before or day of the game.

Just my opinion:Those advisories are for normal travel. A team traveling by charter, and living in a bubble at Souix Falls is not normal travel. I don't believe they would be expected to quarantine under those circumstances. (Unless of course someone tested positive at some point)

In Part III of Chris R's interview with Neil, it was strongly suggested by the latter that there would be at least one more game played in the Atlanta "bubble."

Is there any truth to the rumor that the A10 is considering 20-games just for this year? If that happens, one more pairing in Atlanta would complete the schedule. It would also mean only one non-conference game @ UD Arena.

If the A10 stays at 18, we could add 2 more in Atlanta and then possible get one more game at the Arena. Maybe against someone less challenging.

Just a note: one of my colleagues sons plays college basketball. He played at the university of Texas at Arlington but transferred to the university of Texas at Texarkana. The team has reported positive corona virus cases With players. They are quaranteeing for 14 days. That puts them thru 11/09 in quarantine.

I am assuming that Dayton would experience the same process? I hope does not happen but we need to be prepared.

Seth Davis/the athletic is reporting the ESPN bubble in Orlando has burst. this currently affects 24 teams. Luckily, it does not appear to affect our tournament in South Dakota.

According to the article, one of the factors was that ESPN's safety and testing guidelines were too stringent for some of the schools. So, ESPN cancelled early enough to allow the schools to try and make other scheduling arrangements.

On the most recent BBR podcast (or Talking Out Lowd as he calls it now), Sully mentioned that Neil had announced the final three games would be buy games to be played at the arena. Can anyone on here confirm?

That would be no more games in Atlanta which is kind of a bummer. The schedule is already very difficult so maybe a few cupcakes at home would be a good thing.

The Covid 19 bubble is fickle and moving around. We won't know until mid Nov whether the
virus will move further into the upper midwest.

it’s been hanging out in South Dakota forever. The positivity rate has been crazy. So, if that’s the worry, it’s already there. As somebody already alluded to above, what we really need to worry about our individual conference protocols and wires crossing that would prevent this tournament from happening.

High positivity just means you are testing fewer asymptomatic people. Test more people including more asymptomatic ones and cases will go up and positivity will go down. Just however you want to manipulate the numbers.

Jon Rothstein gives UD's Non-Con a big ole' thumbs-up!

A global pandemic and playing in a non power conference has had ZERO effect on Dayton's non-conference slate. Sioux Falls MTE (3), Mississippi State (Atlanta), SMU, Ole Miss. Impressive.

Wonder why the Ohio teams can’t have a bubble. Dayton, Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati, Miami of Ohio, Ohio University, Akron, Toledo, Bowling Green, Wright State, Cleveland State (sorry if I missed others).

Pretty sorry effort by marketing and sports information.

And the regular typos in social media graphics drive me batty. Don’t have to be big time to proofread. Let’s go.

Looks like Ohio State is opening on 11/25 with Illinois State.

Loyola Chi is out of the Indy MTE due to COVID, right now it is only UC and Duquense.

You forgot Ole Miss. Neil said 3 of the remaining 5 will be buy games at the arena. I assume at this late stage the remaining two possible games won't be filled. I hope I'm wrong but we're about a week out, not looking good.

Given the fluidity, push-back of the tournament, and built-in open slots I would not be surprised to seems games added throughout the season. Either true non-con games or "non-con" games against fellow A10 schools we only play once in conference.

Its safe to say that scheduling will be fluid for everyone this year. Traditional one-way buy games are not attractive to teams located in states where home attendance is restricted. Its the home attendance that pays for the "buy," and without the ticket sales its a losing proposition. Getting the games on TV is paramount and the only way to bring in revenue, and the buy games we can get aren't usually TV worthy outside of the Dayton market.

But if you hold out and are willing to roll the dice, there is a very good chance to pick up some premier non-conference home and home games. There is also the chance for some one-time away games that are on national TV (e.g. Duke in 2002).

I wouldnt be surprised if the non-con as we know it right now is what it will remain. How many more times can you chase ghosts. The season is about to start. I think we're gonna roll with what we got.

I'm a little surprised that we haven't lined up a few games with teams like Findlay, Evansville, Baldwin Wallace, et. al. , Just to get the competitive blood moving.

Not criticizing Sullivan. Would not want to walk in his shoes right now.

I’m not sure the risk/return is positive with one of those teams. UD beats them by 30 but also takes unnecessary exposure risks. This is a senior led team...they shouldn’t need a warm up game.

everybody needs real game reps, even seniors.

While these deals mainly with football, soccer and other outdoor sports, there have been reports that there have been 0 spread of Covid during actual game competition from one player to someone on the other team. Basketball could perhaps be different since you are indoors, but UD arena isn't exactly a confined space. I assume those studies would have included hockey as well, though the NHL played in the bubble, not sure about european leagues.

probably the biggest challenge, is if there are no fans in the stands, and its not attractive enough for TV, where does the revenue come from to pay a team to come in at anywhere close to 2019 dollars? Is it worth it for Findlay to come play @ UD just to get a game in and not walk away with a check?

From an article I posted over in scheduling theory, teams are still paying out money it's just less than what it used to be

This team deserves more then 3 non-con games to prepare for the A-10 schedule which is going to basically be everything when it comes to Selection Sunday. I think a lot of D-1 teams within a two hour bus ride of Dayton (Ohio, NKU, UC, XU, IUPUI, Butler, BG, Toldeo, Akron, Miami, Ft. Wayne, etc) would have been interested in a home and home "series" around Thanksgiving weekend. Nobody would have had to pay anybody. Each team took on own expenses. No air travel. No team loses home revenue because there will be no tickets sold.

BUT.....thinking way out of the box, can you imagine the buzz, excitement we would be experiencing today if UD and WSU played a home and home on Nov 25 and 27? We're all home. Our kids and grand kids cannot come home from LA, Chicago and Pittsburgh because they would have to 14 day quarantine when they got home. It's a no brain-er to me!!!! If not already in the plans it's too late now. BUT OUR FLYERS AND WE FANS DESERVE MORE THEN 3 NON CON GAMES.

I agree Neil Sullivan has a difficult job and I hope he comes up with a non-con that makes me eat my words.

God Bless all, be safe and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

It's been posted elsewhere. We may see a flurry of last minute opponents become available. Texas A&M just today pulled out of the South Dakota bubble tournament. It's conceivable that a game pops up for next Monday-Friday, especially when we are seeing games without fans. So many moving parts with attendant risk. Who knows?

That's a great idea. Since we were supposed to play Wichita State in the tourney, maybe we could schedule something with them.

With 3 true freshman and 2 redshirt freshman I'd think some Houston Baptist type games wouldn't be bad for getting their wet.

Those guys have had less practice and no exhibition or closed scrimmage.

With Weaver redshirting and Cohill out with injury one of the true freshman guards is going to have step into the 6th man role

Sources: Several Division 1 programs who are struggling to fill their non-conference schedule are debating playing non Division 1 opponents to fill gaps. Many view it as a pseudo scrimmage or exhibition, which are not permitted this year.

Don’t be surprised to see NCAA OOC games cancelled for D1 in December. 30+ D1 basketball teams have COVID issues right now.

This really boggles my mind. What good does it do for division 1 teams to play non-division 1 opponents? D1 programs need to just play each other twice this season (H/H) if one team does not want to be stuck with a return away game next season. At least give the fans something fun to watch.

So we we would get:

Dayton vs Wittenberg
and
OSU vs Findley

Instead of:

Dayton vs OSU
and
Wittenberg vs Findley

Because of COVID?

That's less than 10% of teams. Why would that mean cancelling a whole month of hoops?

WITT has cancelled all winter sports so they can't play Findlay.
I know we will eventually have more then the 3 non con games we have scheduled, but I'm becoming concerned. I'd like to see us schedule the max (7?) non con before A-10 and let the chips fall as far as covid.

Go Flyers!!

p.s. RIP Sonia

Add Bellarmine to the current list of those in shut-down mode, per source.

Seems we get 3 or so that get out of quarantine each day, replaced by 3 that enter in.

Sorry for my Debbie Downer post, but at this point I think we will be lucky to get 15 games total between now and the end of March. The NCAA will do all it can to not lose the cash cow of a tourney which may be held in April or even May. The NCAA is probably hoping local and state governments do not place too many restrictions or prevent teams from playing at all between now and spring time.
