2022-23 Games of note
Annual tradition, getting it out a few weeks early, I guess we can post anything interesting in scrimmages (secret or otherwise) as well. There are a ton of games on opening night. Hopefully this is the start to a magical season and some redemption for the 2019-20 that never got to show off in the tournament.

Monday Nov 7th (opening night/day)
Some games have their time set, others are still TBD. Lots of action on opening night, seems like just about everyone is playing. Only 1o games the following day (one of which starts at 12:00 am so still kind of opening day) and another 25 on wednesday, it is indeed the start of a bunch of teams dreams. Lets get going, shall we?
CS Fullerton @ #19 SD State (I'm sure they would like some 19-20 redemption as well)
MS Valley State @ #5 Baylor at noon (perhaps this is the first real game of the season?)
LaSalle @ #16 Nova
VMI @ Richmond
Quinipeac (I guess they do more than just conduct polls) @ Rhody (Archie's debut)
St Francis - Pa @ Bona
Manhattan @ VCU
Dartmouth @ Fordham
CCSU @ UMass
Mason @ #15 Auburn
FDU @ Loyola (Ill) Welcome to the A10
Memphis @ Vandy (not many real marquee games so this one counts even if neither is ranked)
S Dakota @ Wisky
Murray St @ SLU
Lots of matchups with Non D1 schools. Not a very entertaining set of games for having so many on the slate, in the past when they did their 24 hour event, there were always a couple of top 25 matchups on Tuesday night and a few other compelling matchups sprinkled in. Not so much this season.

Part of the lack of top 25 games during that first 24 hour period is election night is that Tuesday and ESPN/NCAA did not want to have the Champions classic conflict with election night. So, since they moved everything to Monday, November 7, that also means ESPN has Monday night football and they will not preempt that for college basketball. I would imagine opening week will be normal in 2023.

Not sure what is the best spot for this, but HoopsHD had an interesting take on a preseason bracket... Took the makeup for each of the 32 conferences media/coaches polls, plus the preseason AP poll and put together a bracket based on that.
UD is a 6 seed, as their AP polling would indicate.

Lots of interesting stuff day one. La Salle getting a crack a Nova before they've got that machine up and running could be fun. Steve Prohm's re-debut w/ Murray St. @ SLU. GMU @ Auburn...

FDU had the ball and a chance to tie it up late but turned the ball over and Loyola sealed the deal at the line.
Lots of teams got pushed to the edge, not many upsets. Someone posted how close UD's season openers have been under CAG; I'll take the easy win and hope for more cohesion when they take on SMU on Friday.

Tuesday Nov 8:
Not much going on in college hoops. With 0 NBA games apparently we couldn't be trusted to get our voting done early and off to watch games on the same day. Anyhoo:
Milwaukee @ Purdue. I don't know if Milwaukee has much of a chance, but kind of a fun roster despite the departure of last seasons best player to the NBA. They have the cousin of Manute Bol, Vin Baker's son and Darvin Ham's son. If nothing else, lots of NBA connections hanging around in the family section.
Montana @ Duquesne (-4)

No upsets last night, but some closer calls than the experts predicted:
G'town by 10 over Coppin St
South Carolina by 3 over SC State
Providence by 1 over Rider
Wednesday Nov 9:
Nothing all too interesting tonight
Davidson @ Wright State may be the game of the night nationwide. I don't know much about WSU this year, but love their coach, should be a good test for the change in coaches at Davidson.
Interesting sub note: WSU transfer Grant Basile put up 30 & 10 in his debut for VTech while Tanner Holden came off the bench for Ohio State and was perfect from the field for 12 points in 18 minutes. Part of me wonders how much, if any NIL played a role in their decisions to transfer, but gotta be tough for schools like WSU to consistently build winners if their best players will up and transfer after a season or 2 for a better NIL deal. We heard how Holmes said there were bigger schools that used back door channels to try and sway him to transfer from UD with promises of NIL money. Culture is going to be a huge deal moving forward for so many basketball programs.

Yep, sounds like a one on one game. I never heard of either school.
Its amazing how many new schools keep popping up. The post secondary business is a great one right now, and they all want sports.

True but both guys did stay at WSU for 4 years and 3 years, respectively, and not just a couple so they did get a couple really good, productive years from both of them and had NIL been here a year or two earlier maybe both would have bolted earlier. I think we're going to see this with/from plenty of schools and from players who haven't logged nearly as many mpg as those guys who just want to play more.
WSU will/may lose a really good player for a better NIL deal or maybe one whose skills have proven they want to just play against better players, in a better league and play on television alot more. On the flip, there could also be plenty of high level recruits from bigger schools who haven't logged the mpg they desire who simply want to go down a notch and get those at WSU.

Providence had the one point lead and Rider had the ball with a good chance to go up one with several seconds left on the game clock. (I say good chance because Rider was competitive all game long.) The Rider guard bringing the ball up literally tripped with no one close to him fell down and lost the ball.
Rider was about 5% better on FG%, 43% better on 3 pt %, and 20% better at the FT line.
They also led in Fouls 29-15! I felt bad for the kid that tripped. (I am a fan of any BE opponent)
And it took overtime for Georgetown to get that win over Coppin St.

Amazing comeback.
They almost blew it with 2.5 seconds left in regulation. Trying to get off a shot led to a turnover and WSU had a very clean look at a game winner.

I think A10 is 12-3 so far with only one questionable loss (thanks Archie). A lot of tough games Friday.

Caught the tail end of Bellermine (who plays its home games where Louisville used to player their home games down near their fairgrounds) knocking off Louisville in the YUM center (Lousiville's newish home).
Bellermine lead by 12 with like 4 min to go, Louisville widdled it all the way down to 1, then missed the front end of a 1 & 1. Bellermine, got fouled and also missed the front end of their 1 and one, but somewhow grabbed an easy offensive rebound off the miss, but proceeded to turn the ball over. Louisville got one more decent look, but fumbled it away. Its Bellermine's 3rd season in D1, they went 20-11 last year and I think won the Asun, but were inelgible for postseason play during their transition rule (seems kind of stupid when moving up divisions)
Boise St lost at home to S Dakota St. Boise has been a bubble team the last few years, IIRC.

I saw the Davidson Wright State game.
Davidson looked horrible and disjoined in the first half. Wright State led by 21 points at one time.
Davidson looked like a different team in the second half and both overtimes.
Loyer is very effective on offense. He is crafty and tries to draw contact fouls while shooting. Once he threw a shot up hoping for a foul, did not get the call and the ball went in anyway.
However Loyer is a liability on defense. Calvin scored 38 on him. Malachi should be able to use his speed against him.
Davidson has another typical good three point shooting team. They are weak inside.
Wright State should have won. They folded. Not sure how good Davidson will be, but it is early.

Thursday Nov 10
NCAA craptastic slate of games continues this evening, but have no fear not only are our Flyers slated to play, decent games (on paper) start showing up tomorrow night.
Anyhoo tonight:
Vermont @ St Mayry's qualifies as your "game of the night"
Nicholls St travels to Wyoming
Lindenwood takes on a non D1 team (no clue if they are a decent team or not)
Townson @ UMass (-2)

All of the "anecdotes" about sports showed up in that game. Or Yogi'isms.
"You only miss shots that don't go in the hoop." - WSU first half
"They cannot keep shooting that good." - WSU second half
"Just play our own game, and things will work out." - Davidson - entire game
I went to the game because I was shocked Davidson was in town to play Wright State. This is their first meeting, so it must be a home-and-home, because I highly doubt Wright State could "buy" Davidson.
I wanted to see what Davidson was about and what not. Halftime 52-36 WSU. WSU scored like 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Davidson seems like the same team, just with different names on the jerseys. If you didn't like Gibbs, you won't like Loyer. Same type of player who will hit a three if he has about 4 inches clearance between him and a defender. Mennenga was your usually Davidson "4" where he tries to be physical down low, but hangs out at the 3pt line and hits threes. They also did a triangle-trap defense near the end of the first half and occasionally in the second half, but WSU was able to get across mid-court without issues. Also, same back-door pretzel-shape plays they always do. WSU got wise to it and had a more help defense on those, as well as jumping the passing lane of the back door cut, rather than just following the defender.
Loyer didn't seem to be able to do much in the first half, but yet, finished with close to 40 points. Davidson only played 7 players, while WSU played 8. In the first half Menennga was constantly rotating on and off the bench. In the 2nd overtime, Loyer got leg cramps, and was sucking down liquid heavily, as well as being giving Now-n-Laters or Starbursts (I'm not sure what it was, but the trainer was giving him something.) to keep himself going.
As for the end of regulation, "trying to get off a shot", they were actually inbounding at the other end of the court, and went for a hail-mary, which was blocked by the defender, it was in the air, and the WSU player with 35+ points caught it in mid-air and launched at the same time from around the 3pt line or so, and almost made it. That would have been a Sports Center top 10 moment.
Then Loyer had a shot at the end of the 1st overtime that didn't go in. Then at the end of the 2nd overtime, up by 1, I think, he waved off the center from coming for a pick, Menennga (I think) set a simple screen at the top with the WSU defender going around him, but Loyer was already open, drilled a 3 with 5 seconds to go and now up by 4, and you just knew it was over. The arena basically emptied at that point.
Absolutely astonishing game from start to finish.

With a whopping 3,784 people in attendance on a night with zero other sporting events of the slightest significance to compete with, I bet it did not take long to empty the arena.
I watched most of the second half and both overtimes on TV, and yes it was a very entertaining game. Good summary you posted
With WSU losing their two best players from last year to transfers, I fear it will be a long season for them. I think NIL played a part in this, tell me again that line of BS some use of how NIL will be a good thing for 80% + of the MBB teams in the country.

Clayton, or anyone else that watched on TV, was your audio feed roughly 6 seconds ahead of your video feed? Ive never seen the audio and video feed that far apart from each other.

Yes, I gave up on the audio. Assumed it was just me!
Hope this is not a sign of things to come with games on ESPN+. I am 0 for 2

I think both radio & TV broadcasts use a 5-6 second delay on audio to be able to utilize the foul language kill button.
Could be that the video was not using this function and the audio was on a separate channel hence not in synch.
Just my poor opinion ...

For those complaining about ESPN+ remember it is the quality of the local broadcast station that determines the overall quality of the product being delivered. ESPN+ is just a platform for local crews to broadcast their feed on.

UMass now down 11 with eight minutes to go. They are in the double bonus for the rest of the night, but are shooting terribly from the free throw line.

Probably not, as Nova has history. Also there are some good teams receiving votes, who may creep in.

Louisville is really really bad. They lost their exhibition game by double digits to a DII school. Glad to see WSU beat them.

Technically correct.
But of note, Camara has played 91 games going into this season. License plate says "junior", odometer says "senior".

#15 TCU lost at home last night to Northwestern St. TCU was without their best player due to injury, but still a game they should have won, a potential team Dayton could jump this week if they can win both games.
GW & Richmond lost on the road as underdogs last night to non P5 squads. Richmond had a shot in OT, had the lead with like 30 seconds to go, ended up losing by 4.

Tuesday Nov 15:
Big Night in hoops.
2-0 app state travels to Louisville (-5), can they avoid starting off 0-3?
New Hampshire @ Fordham (-8)
Queens @ LaSalle (-6.5)
Stony Brook @ Rhody (-12) as mentioned above
#4 UK vs Mich State (+7) in Indy
New Mexico @ SMU (-3)
Bona @ S Dakota St (-6.5)
Maquette @ Purdue (-9)
Memphis @ SLU (-2.5) SLU is on the verge of being ranked, might get there with a 2-0 week
#17 SD State @ Stanford (+5)
Green Bay @ Wisky (-27)
#7 Duke vs #6 Kansas (+2) in Indy
#18 Bama @ S Bama (+12)
Loyola Maramount @ UC Irvine (-4)
#21 Dayton @ UNLV (+3.5)
A handful of other ranked teams or teams getting votes playing at home as double digit favorites; seems like a good week for UD to get a couple of wins and advance into the top 20.

SLU / Memphis lighting it up at the half. Defense has been spotty, but both teams can catch & shoot the 3.

USF loses to Austin Peay (something we are embarrassingly familiar with). A lot of people around here spent a lot of time lecturing about how it would be a mistake to part ways with BG back in the day. I think we can all agree that it worked out pretty well for us.

Of the 15 A10 schools only two have a losing record so far, and they are 1-2. If I remember right that is a better start than most years.

Virginia Tech defeats previously undefeated Penn State 61–59. Lots of Atlantic 10 action happening in the late afternoon window. La Salle takes on Wake Forest, UMass takes on Wichita State in a potential early season bracket buster game.

The portal has made "buy" games far less certain Ws now. Even seemingly lopsided matchups in exempt tournies based on name brand are becoming way more competitive. Cant take anybody for granted anymore.

It figures that a program that has become a dumpster fire can only put points on the board when it’s garbage time.

I know he’s AG’s good friend but no way would I want Martin coaching at UD

Perhaps you could expound on why you wouldn't want such a fantastic coach at UD?

I am guessing it is because he has been caught cheating by the NCAA three times (that I know of).

Dwayne Cohill has 43 points on 16/19 shooting, 6-6 from three. That’s one of the best performances you’ll ever see in college hoops. He missed three shots the ENTIRE GAME.
Good for him

Wow, could we use him. Too bad he jumped ship.
He has gone from 22% to 36% to 41% to 47% on threes. Players do improve their shooting.

If he played like that when he was here, he'd still be here . . . just sayin'

Louisville obviously didn't hire a HC and staff that 'cheats'!

That implies he was pushed out which is highly unlikely. He was in line for serious PT when he got injured and even more PT when he decided to leave. A decision which was a huge blow at the time (though posters wouldn't admit it) and is still being felt to this day.

Your Louisville Cardinals are now an outstanding 0-8, wow. Where have you gone Chris Mack?

If this was UD they'd be on coach #3 this year trending toward #4. I'd love to hear all their excuses since new coach isn't supposed to impact things at all.

SLU slaughtered by Iona. Temple about to beat Saint Joe’s as well. We may truly be a one-way league this year.
