Justin Roberts, a 4 star PG out of Indiana, makes it sound like he's waiting for that official offer from Archie:

Funny he is rated so highly but has only two offers. Hopefully Archie is in early on what appears to be a good one. He will be playing this summer on Indiana's top AAU team.

Many times that's grades and qualifying questions. No clue here, but that's a common reason highly regarded players have few offers.

Funny how things get inflated during recruitment. Video title describes Thomas as 6-10, while other references say 6-8.

I don't know his real height, but that's a 7' wingspan--as a minimum. Potential lane protector.

Duruji is a 6'6" 2 star shooting guard, who has very few offers.
Scott is a 6'5" 2.5 shooting guard with twelve offers, Dayton and RI the best.
Wright is a 6' point guard with 2.5-3 stars with at least 10 very good offers.
Thompson is 6'2" point guard with 3-4 stars and at least 17 very good offers.

Why after 3 consecutive NCAA's and all the other advantages of the arena, attendance, tv,etc. are we unable to recruit better players than the mediocre group of last year, a three star that can't shoot for next year and these lightly regarded kids????

Dayton, VCU and St Joseph's have offered in the past two months.
Also holds offers from UCF, Monmouth, Old Dominion, La Tech, Chattanooga, Stony Brook, and Towson.
So that's 10 offers at least.
As for only being 2 stars, he wasn't even playing organized basketball as an underclassman in high school. What he was doing though, was clearing 6 ft, 2 in. in the high jump.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...6050&tid=ss_tw
He's an interesting recruit.

Other than Scott maybe I don't think it's real accurate to call any of these kids lightly regarded / recruited. They are all getting a ton of interest right now and picking up offers by the day. The live recruiting period JUST started. Recruiting services will update stars and all that soon.

Love that Archie is getting in early on this kid, because he may explode. At that size at shooting guard, if he has a decent shot, he would be a great get.

Not sure if this was already talked about but Howard Washington (Former Butler commit) has decommitted and reopened his recruiting. He also reclassified to the 2017 class. Good point guard that we offered and looks like we are after.

A little more to the story on the recent offers Anthony Duruji and Eddie Scott...
So they both play for Team Takeover - where Sam Miller played. So presumably Dayton coaches have developed a little bit of a relationship with the coaches. Makes sense they are going back to the well... but there's something else there.
See #12 Ryan Allen. Who is he? The brother of the Drexel transfer Terrell Allen that Dayton has reportedly been in contact with.
Team Takeover AAU roster
13 Rasir Bolton 5'10" Millwood(Va) 2018
12 Ryan Allen 6'1" DeMatha(Md) 2017
5 Jelani Williams 6'5" Sidwell Friends(DC) 2017
22 Elijah Clarance 6'3" St Maria Goretti(Md) 2017
10 Eddie Scott, Jr. 6'4" Gonzaga(DC) 2017
11 Chyree Walker 6'5" Bullis(Md) 2017
4 Myles Douglas 6'7" Friends(Md) 2017
1 Nigel Jackson 6'6" Mt St Joes(Md) 2017
23 Anthony Duruji 6'7" St Andrews(Md) 2017
24 Stefon Fisher 6'9" Idea Charter(DC) 2017
32 Christian Dyches 6'7" DeMatha(Md) 2017
15 Luka Garza 6'10" Maret School(DC) 2017
3 Chandler Penn 6'0" St Maria Goretti(Md) 2017

It is quite obvious we have some recruiting ties to the Baltimore-Washington D.C. region. That is good. There are some incredibly good players that come out of that area.

There are a lot of good players left in the field. It takes a coach that can develop a player while being able to recognize if the player is the right fit for the system. When that happens, overlooked players can become stars.

I wonder if all the recent offers are because they don't think they have a shot at some of the initial kids they were in on?

Every team sends out way more offers than spots open, this is pretty standard for all teams, especially this time of year.

I understand they send more out than spots, but my question is why now? We have offered about 6-7 kids in the last 5 days. Most of them 2-3* kids when we had been in on 3-4* kids up until this point. Obviously with that many going out so quickly, something just happened/is happening. Did they hear no from a few kids they were in on? Was there a big AAU event these new kids were showcased in? Did they tell initial recruits we will hold your spot or not recruit at your position until a certain date...basicslly giving them a deadline? I just find it interesting April 21 rolls around and we deal out 7 offers, all to kids that are inferior to the current kids we have recruited in this class according to every major recruiting service (ESPN, Rivals, etc).
When you say "this is pretty standard for all teams, especially this time of year", is that because teams are getting their "plan B and c" in place? We have alot of spots to fill and I hope the staff isn't settling for quanity over quality.

A new recruiting period just started and there were several AAU events over the last two weekends. Archie generally has not liked to extend offers unless he has seen the player in person.
Quite honestly, we did not have enough 2017 offers out prior to this month. All that said, it is crazy that we haven't snagged anyone yet. I read on the Twitter that it has been 14 months since we got a commitment from a high school player. That's s long time.

The recent offers have been to kids in D.C., Baltimore, Minnesota, Georgia, New England, etc. who the staff have had to go out and evaluate. These are kids who probably haven't been on campus yet, so that's the next step before commitments are real likely. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think those visits usually happen later in the summer as these kids are busy with AAU right now. These next few weeks transfers are generally taking the visits and making the commitments.
So any rumblings about visits being scheduled?

What thirt said, the contact period just opened back up, I imagine most of these guys were already on the staff's radar, perhaps some knew an offer was coming, but Archie wasn't going to extend the offer until the open recruiting period started back up.

That is one thing you don't have to worry about with Archie. He has said more than once he won't fill a spot just to be filling a spot. If he can't get the quality he wants he will leave the spot open.

If we're going to advance the program though, at some point don't we have to start trying to win a recruiting battle or two against high major competition? And no, one offer from Purdue or Michigan doesn't count.

Trey Landers committed to UD on March 2, 2015. We have had 14 months to recruit the 2017 class and we have not been able to land one commitment.
We are losing our 4 best players after this year, this 2017 class will determine if we are the next Gonzaga (continue to reload with talent) or the next St Louis (lose a strong senior class and struggle). With our success on the court and the support off the court, no reason why we cannot land highly ranked prospects consistently.
It is time to beat the big boys in the recruiting battles.

I think their are two factors at play. We need at least four guys from the class of 2017. Secondly, social media is letting us know when offers are made. Just a couple years ago this was not the case and we got info from Rivals, reporters and ESPN.

I think history has shown that when a guy commits and whom he chooses Dayton over aren't predictors of success. Rankings don't factor in character, whether a kid can be a good teammate, whether he can cut it in the classroom and a whole host of things that you have to look at. The first guy you can get or the highest ranked guy you can get are very likely not the right guy to get.

Nice article published today on recent offer Aaron Thompson, a PG from Fairfax, VA, whose recruitment has exploded. Various sites have him with 15 to 20 really good offers, but Dayton is obviously not backing off. In the article, it says he's hearing from Dayton, Georgetown, Cal, Nebraska, and Pitt the most.

Going back to the Gregory era a lot of these recruiting battles are decided over the summer and into the fall when you could get these kids on campus

Quite honestly, we did not have enough 2017 offers out prior to this month. All that said, it is crazy that we haven't snagged anyone yet. I read on the Twitter that it has been 14 months since we got a commitment from a high school player. That's s long time.

Two weeks ago, I spent the weekend at a USJN sanctioned AAU tourney for high school girls. When the top teams were playing, multiple coaches lined both sidelines. After the games, they were swarming like vultures to make contact with some of the better players. This was at a regional event with primarily D2 and D3 coaches, I can only imagine how much crazier of an atmosphere it is for the elite level guys at D1 events.
I would not want to be a 16, 17 or 18 year old trying to make these decisions quickly. Give the kids time to sort out what coaches and schools have their best interest in mind. Most of the major AAU events where coaches can attend and make contact occur in July, so I look for late July and August to be a very active time for news for our Flyers.

I saw on twitter a few folks reporting that Taveion Hollingsworth, a PG out of KY was supposed to be visiting both Wright State and Dayton today.
Any word if that is happening?
Not a ton of offers but it sounds like a lot of bigger programs are starting to get interested so it may just me a matter of time...

Well, it shouldn't take any effort at all from Calipari if he wants him. I read an interview somewhere in which he said he is a huge UK fan and that's his dream school.

6'3" shooting guard from Baltimore. Offers from A10, and similar schools. He has interest from Pitt, VT and ND, but no offer yet.
Seems to have decent hops and some length. More of a slasher than a shooter. Not a great handle.

Don't think an offer is coming. Not sure if UD will offer or not either.
"It isn't heavy (interest) but they are showing some love," Hollingsworth said of UofL.

Unofficial visits typically do not mean that a kid is going to commit or that there is even a lot of interest both ways. Sometimes, if the school is showing heavy interest and the kid is blown away from the visit he will commit. That does not sound like the case here. If it was an official visit then I would be more worried, but juniors who are going to be seniors cannot take officials yet.

I was implying that if he's being recruited by Louisville at this stage in his career, he's likely going to see big school interest. Doesn't mean Archie can't land him, but I imagine over the next couple months the competition for his services may get stiff.

According to Evan Daniels of Scout.com Kostas Antetokounmpo has committed to the Flyers. He is the brother of Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks. Only strange part is that most sites list him as class of 2016 but Daniels says he is 2017. ******** Daniels just corrected himself. He is a 2016 recruit so this year.
https://twitter.com/EvanDaniels/stat...91641446924288
Looking at more sites it looks like he will be a Flyer this year. A link to his instagram announcing it is below, but we may need to send him a copy of the new logo.

Scout has him listed at 6'11", ESPN has him at 6'10", Rivals and VC have him at 6'9"...4 stars from Rivals and Scout...Archie landed a 4 star, class of 2016, 6'11" player, this late in the year, that seems very impressive.

Kostas Antetkounmpo is headed to Dayton
BRIAN SNOW

The Dayton Flyers got good news late landing top 100 prospect Kostas Antetkounmpo.
The Dayton Flyers got some great news on Thursday evening when they added one of the best available prospects in the 2016 class with Kostas Antetokounmpo. The younger brother of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kostas has a ton of upside, and should be able to play a role for the Flyers.
With good size, athleticism, and skill, Antetokounmpo is raw, but he has a ton of ability. At 6-foot-10, he has the size and length to contribute right away on the defensive end of the floor, and come along on offense as well.
He also had made an official visit to St. John's before deciding on Dayton.

Even though I enjoy reading the recruiting threads and seeing who our Flyers are after, this is the exact reason I do not get too excited by the lack of news or commitments for our Flyers the next couple of seasons. Archie and staff seem to be good at keeping secrets and surprising us at the last minute with good news.
Love his brothers stats in his 2nd year in the NBA 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Hoping the younger one in the family is just as good, or better!

yes.
We had 2 openings, Landers took one, Greek Freak took the other, and unfortunately, Big Steve's passing has opened up a third that I assume will go unused. Then again, I figured they were heading into next season w/ 2 unused scholarships, so who knows. I think Archie likes have 1 open scholarship for late transfers. 13 scholarship kids is honestly too many, so having a guy on the bench that can do nothing but practice and hopefully improve over the course of a season has become pretty standard at most places.

What is the deal with Wehrli?
Kostas kind of reminds me of Kevin Durant.

I believe I read that even though he had a year of eligibility, he chose not to return for a 5th year.

Curry is the best player in the NBA, and Dalton is head and shoulders better than McCarron, so not everything.

I think curry is the best shooter in the nba but I don't think he is the best all around player.

one thing to note ... on the biggest play in Cavs history Smith set the screen for Irving because the Cavs knew that Curry would switch on to Irving. It was the matchup the Cavs wanted and why they did not set a 2nd ball screen for Irving. The design of the play was for Irving to score against Curry.

I think Archie likes have 1 open scholarship for late transfers. 13 scholarship kids is honestly too many, so having a guy on the bench that can do nothing but practice and hopefully improve over the course of a season has become pretty standard at most places.

I still feel Archie wants, and we need, one more pg. The question is can he find one that meets all his criteria this late? I think it's still possible.

It is still very early in the 17 cycle. I think people are getting confused. 17 recruits will not be here until the 17-18 school year.

This is the type recruit we should be getting given our resources and results. Nice to see us compete and win against good programs, rather than against some of the lower level A10 and materially inferior programs that many of kids on the 2017 recruiting threads are considering.

Are we still comparing ourselves to Xavier? Ugh! I'm sorry but they have hit the big time and are in a enviable league. Even with the recruitment of Kostas, we will be very small and will be playing without a single true center. My definition of a Division 1 center us 6'10" and 240 lbs. or bigger.
Here is a list if Xavier's last year's roster of BIGS: 6'10" 247 Sean O'Mara, 6'10" 232 Jalen Reynolds, 6'10" 210 Makinde London, 6'10" 240 James Farr and 6'9" 240 RaShid Gaston. This sounds more like a BIG TIME division 1 roster.
Let's not get too euphoric. I know that we are all experincing a "runners high" with the signing of Kostas. We still have NO CENTER on this team. We will be playing very small ball this coming year.
Is there still time to get a center for this year? Or does Archie need to be hitting the transfer wire to get a kid to sit on the bench for a year and have a center for next year?
Rosters are still incomplete for this coming year but it does look like Xavier will also be much smaller in this coming year due to transfer of Makinde London and graduation.

The game is changing. Villanova had a 6'11 center, but after that, nobody over 6'6 played more than 17 min a game. They, like UD last year were a guard and forward oriented team with only 1 true big man. For this season they have nobody on their roster taller than 6'8. We have 2 or 3 depending on XW. I am not too worried about our lack of a center. That is the way the game is going, whether people like it or not. Just like all the spreads and uptempo in college football.

Even the NBA is changing. Look at the small-ball that was played in the Cavs/Warriors series. Both the NBA and Division I are all about guards, ball screens, penetration, and dishing to either the three-shooter or the cutter to the hoop. That's the way offenses have gone today. The three-point shot and shot clock moved the game from the center position to guard.

The game has become guard oriented. The ball handlers control the tempo. The days of having a seven footer post under the basket in slowdown mode are gone. Three point shooting and uptempo play is here to stay.

Not only is the game changing, but it has been, and is, the style Archie prefers to play.
We also have less thugs than X. So what?

Please keep things in perspective. Steve passed away just a little over 6 weeks ago and you're ranting about the lack of a true center. This isn't euphoria. This is a fanbase/program in need of some good news and is embracing some good news.

Great point. I'll always have a pain in my heart when I see or hear Steve's name. Still doesn't seem real when I look at pictures from last year like the A-10 Championship celebration with everyone swarming big Steve. Makes you do a double take that he's gone.
What is truly transcending is that a player of Kostas pedigree will likely finally "open the door" for other top tier national recruits to look at Dayton should this young man be drafted into the NBA in a few years. That is what excites me most. Watching him playing the way he does at only 17, with a very good chance of a few more inches to his frame and added muscle, top notch coaching by Archie and national University exposure, likely brings us up another notch. Perhaps Steve has pulled a few strings for us from above?

I have been advocating all along even before Steve's death that each position starter shoild have an under-study. That under-study becomes the practice buddy for each position. The starter and the under-study challenge each other and make each other better. A lucky guy, Steve's under-study because he could practice every day against an NBA type center body type. Then if due to injury, illness or foul trouble, its the next man up. But, there was no backup planned for the center position. Sam Miller is not that guy. He is a forward. I even gave examples like Johnnie Davis and Donald Smith made each other better by practicing against each other. Prior to Steve's death and I continue to believe that you've got to have succession planning for every position.

Good big men simply aren't that easy to get. And Davis and Smith played different positions.
