Games of Note 2015/16
I'll let Glen, who did such a great job last year fill in some scores here (if he is inclined to continue), but I did want to note a couple more scores:
Western Illinois on the road with a 2 point win over Wisconsin. Wow!
Monmouth takes UCLA to overtime, but looks like they fade down the stretch of the OT.
BG's Georgia Tech scores 116 points in beating Cornell. Usually takes them 4 games to put that amount of points on the board.
And my favorite of the night: Portland beats the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech (yes, that's their real nickname), who were led in scoring by Joel Yellow Owl with 23 points. And yes, that's HIS real name.

Wow, that is a great name...rivals one of my favorite names of all time. He was a quarterback for a team in the Northwest in the 80's - Sonny Sixkiller!

And the Moccasins of Chattanooga took-down the Georgia Bulldogs, in Athens, in OT.
Also, UK didn't have the easiest time of it, beating Albany by a mere 13 at Rupp.

Yes they did beat Seton Hill, not the he Pirates of Seton Hall. At first glance I thought they beat a BE team. 😄😄😄

And Butler dropped 144 on The Citadel. That number's reminiscent of the waxing that Oklahoma put on our Flyers back @ 1988 or so. And the funniest part for me is, Vegas had set the over/under line at 147, and Butler nearly matched that by themselves.

That is a pretty unbelievable score, but then The C is barely D1, especially if that D stands for defense. You would think Butler put up and made a bunch of threes, but only 8-26 for 31%. They did shoot 77% on two's and grabbed 63 rebounds. And The C only had 20 turnovers, so was not a press, steal and score game.

Based on those stats, it sounds like Butler was able to dump it into the post and/or drive to the hoop at will against The Citadel.
Actually, I've liked Butler for years, for how they play the game, and how they've been able to do what they do in a state with a smaller population and some big name (and big $) schools. If only they didn't have that conference affiliation issue...

This was taken from a recap of the game..... "The Citadel, under coach Duggar Baucom and his frenetic style made famous at VMI where his team led the nation in scoring six of the last eight seasons, trapped all over the court and attempted 47 three-pointers. Butler keyed off that to put up staggering numbers offensively while holding the visitors to 27-percent shooting and forcing 20 turnovers." Butler starters scored 89 and they got a "mere" 55 off the bench.... maybe somebody needed to tell Duggar it wasnt working.

Only other notable time I heard of them was after UD hired Oliver Purnell and it was announced he had coached there. Pretty tall order to take down the Hoyas, especially in an endurance match.

While some IU fans might disagree, very true in the sense it hosted real Indiana high school tournament games and the "mythical" championship game remake from the movie. To this day I can still remember the smell of the popcorn and the shininess of the hardwood floors back in high school in the 70s.

But isn't The Citadel mainly a military school? I doubt they have much luck recruiting if that's true. Just look at the service academies in basketball. They all have issues, and they offer an unparalleled education and a commission on graduation.

Don't know for sure, but I am under the impression that the Citadel is one of just a handful of schools that does not make any concessions in the admission standards for athletes; be they great football players or basketball players.

I love the early season oddities in rpi etc - like now, if you look at realtimerpi, they show eggs as being 2-0, beating both Miami of OH and Miami of FL by identical scores. Gave them two $$ for the FL win. The two wins on one day ranks them #2 in the nation. (?)

Virginia plays an early road game against a regional opponent every year now that Tony Bennett is there. They've lost some of those games. Yet, their program is still elite. How does that happen??
Maybe the whole "everything to lose and nothing to gain" battlecry is bogus. UVA doesn't seem to lose much of anything, even when they lose. They're more road tested than most of the teams in their conference will be.

The funny thing is, GW will still finish outside the top 4 in the league plus Lonergan is overrated

GW students rushed the court to celebrate what the announcers said was their biggest home win in 20 years. The A10 got some respect.

I also hate GW, especially their band box of a home court, but this is better than last year when the A10 blew almost all of its non-conference marquee win chances.

Mercer knocked off George mason, all of or other conference mates or OOC opponents won last night, plus GTech for those following BG still.
One game I missed, perhaps (hopefully?) neither team is a future opponent for UD, but we may see either or both in Orlando, USC knocked off Monmouth 101 - 90 at home. I believe that is an extension of the Advocare tournament, wish UD would have done likewise, don't know if anyone else would have been interested.

11/17:
Valpo (+1.5) @ Rhody sans EC Matthews, decent test at 10:00 this morning as they regroup.
Missouri (+14) @ Xavier
Wisconsin-Mil (+13) @ Notre Dame
Bonnies (+9.5) @ Syracuse
Queens College @ Fordham (I think I read they don't leave the city until next season, I guess if you can't be Syracuse, might as well schedule like them)
Rider (+3.5) @ LaSalle
UMass (+4.5) @ Harvard
Kenyon @ Miami
Bill & Mary @ Liberty
#2 UK v #5 Duke (In Chicago again???) should be a fun one tonight, even though it has little to no bearing on UD
#9 Wichita St @ Tulsa
Decent opportunity for the A10 today; while there will be no top 10 scalps (or even top 25) scalps this evening, UD, Rhody, UMass & The Bonnies give the conference a chance at some name victories and added respect. Rhody has to overcome the mental hurdle, but remain talented, UD should win, I don't expect UMass to win, I think Bonnies has a decent chance to pull off the upset. I'd take that in a heart beat. Need LaSalle & Fordham to hold serve

Between games the female commentator said something along the lines of "GW is a real team, they might even be a tournament team." To which I thought, F-you. The way she said it, it came off like she was referring to some team from the MEAC having their first chance at a winning season in 20 years.
GW is picked to finish 4th in the A10, it should come as no surprise that such a team has a very good shot at being a tournament team.

Rhode Island tough on defense as expected, but looks lost on offense without Matthews. Down 14-8 to Valpo 9 minutes left in 1st half.

I thought it wasn't, I thought UD could have added 1 more game to the schedule? I thought I remember Brew saying as such.
double checking, looks like UD has 28 regular season games (plus 2 additional games in Orlando that are not listed yet) so that would make you correct...again
Thanks swampy.

Miami tries to extend their win streak versus Kenyon. Have not lost to the Lords since the 1924-25 season. Way to schedule a tough D-3 opponent, Miami.

Yeah, but 28+2 is only 30 games, you are allowed 31...I thought I read that UD could have scheduled one more but chose not to.
Are we sure this is part of the Orlando tournament?

I thought the conference tournament counted as #31?
Regardless of this specific case, I thought the rule was 27 regular season games, plus any additional games captured thru your conference tournament plus any additional games captured thru the early season tournaments.

I don't think the conf tourney is number 31.
I thought somebody posted a link to these tourneys earlier, UD vs. Bama was not listed as a non-bracketed game.

Well, Rhode Island and Valpo went down to the wire with Hurley's boys missing two shots at a 3 to tie it in the last seconds. Valpo wins.

Yeah, I'm wrong, I must have misread the link that was posted a couple? of months ago. Is this a one shot deal with Alabama? No return game in Alabama next year?
This is a non-bracketed game this afternoon as part of the Advocare Invitational:
http://www.bloggingthebracket.com/20...-events-MTE#AI
http://espnevents.com/advocare-invitational/bracket/
At the bottom of the page:
Non-Bracketed Game(s): Monmouth at Southern California (Nov. 16) & Alabama at Dayton (Nov. 17)
My understanding is that you are allowed 27 regular season games plus 4 games from one of these tournaments.

|
Rhody lost as mentioned, St Bonnies had a 6 point lead at half before falling apart, Tulsa upset Wichita, I think the rest went the way UD wanted it, more or less.

Wednesday 11:18
Richmond (+1.5) @ Wake
Buffalo (+8.5) @ Saint Joes
Saint Louis (-6.5) @ SIU-Edwardsville
A slow night overall after the marathon of games the last 2 days, but a decent night for the A10; good chance to go 3-0, 2 should be gimmies, Richmond while on the road, is the kind of game the A10 really needs to win to push the overall profile a notch higher.

Worthless Thread
With an RPI of 58 there will be no dancing this year. It's time for a new coach and to start over. What a total let down. And before someone uses the whacking me repeatedly over the head icon just kidding.

I forgot to include the arkansas game above, as well as North Florida who won over some non D1 program with ease.
Watched a bit of the Arkansas game, 2nd half for about 5-8 minutes of game time. Akron was up by 10 at half, Arkansas came back to within 2, but Akron started pulling away and I found something else to watch. Arkansas looked OK to me, despite the loss. They certainly don't have the inside presence that Portis was last season and they are not nearly as good as they were last season, but Akron was extremely hot from long range last night, 45%+ at one point late in the 2nd half. Some of those were fairly open off of good ball movement, some of them were decently contended, certainly one of those nights where Akron was hot. Arkansas still moves the ball well on offense and can press in spurts. Flyers should win by double digits at home, but Arkansas will pick up its share of wins, probably a 100-125 rpi squad if I had to guess.
Solid road win for Richmond at Wake. It amazes me how empty the stands are at Wake. I know I'm spoiled being a Flyer fan and seeing 10k+ showing up every game. I've seen that arena rocking for a big ACC game, its amazing how far things have dropped for a solid OOC opponent showing up on their home court.
Another note, watched a bit of the Illinois-Providence game and Illinois doesn't impress me. With a new AD coming on board at some point, they may be looking for a new coach. They only lost by a point on the road at Providence, but man they had multiple opportunities and little to no ball movement. A bunch of "me" basketball, very little team basketball, kind of surprises me coming from a Matta disciple. Groce has been there 3 or 4 years now, and Illinois has yet to take that leap to anything close to what Bill Self had going on there not so long ago.

Thursday 11/19:
Ole Miss (-10) @ George Mason
Creighton (+13) @ #14 Indiana (no direct impact, just interests me)
GW (-9.5) @ South Florida
Central Arkansas @ Umass
Columbia Union @ William and Mary
Stony Brook @#17 Vandy
SE Missouri St @ Alabama A&M
Iowa (-2) @ Marquette
Would be nice for George Mason to get back to what they were when they entered the A10, would be a nice upset.
Can SE Missouri St get off the snide and pick up a win at Alabama A&M who I assume is terrible (though I'm only basing that of the fact that they are usually terrible)
Marquette has been struggling, I expect an Iowa win, game is on FS1 if you decide to tune in.

It would stink for the league, but watch it happen because I still think they are a flake lol

I didn't realize, but it makes sense now, that Ole Miss was playing George Mason in the Charleston Classic, not at George Mason. Since the game was played on a CAA court, George Mason morphed into the CAA caliber team they were when they joined the A10 and picks up a 6 point win over Ole Miss this afternoon. They'll likely play Okie State tomorrow; here's to hopin' they don't turn back into a pumpkin until after they leave Charleston.

Still would love to be in the Big East, but not having a good day with a couple games in progress.
Indiana 60 Creighton 40 with 14 minute to go.
Rutgers 42 St. John's 27 with 15 minutes to go.
Long Beach State 59 Seton Hall 48 with 13 minutes to go.
Rutgers and Seton Hall massive favorites in these games whereas Creighton was a massive underdog.
To be fair, Butler destroyed Missouri State 93 59.
Iowa at Marquette later tonight.

Early impression of Iowa: very good. Marquette is a mess, of course, but Iowa defends well, passes well and is much quicker than I thought. Pretty athletic, lots of size ... legitimate Big 10 contender. Beating them on Thanksgiving will be a challenge. It's a clinic in Milwaukee. Gotta wonder what happened to Marquette. Buzz blew town for good reason if he saw this on the horizon.

Either Iowa really really good or Marquette really really bad. Perhaps both.
Iowa is a must win for the Flyers -- a lot of good seniors/juniors. This will be a huge test. They don't seem to have a lot of depth but starters quite impressive.
48 Iowa 21 Marquette at the half.

Just like other mid majors, transitions, if not planned well in advance, can be painful. I have no sympathy for them.

I understood Wojo was told Archie took the job and he "withdrew from consideration" before it was announced to the public. Graceful way to go when you don't get the job ...

It's not their fault, they're not in a P5 conference. Therefore they don't have talented players.

Iowa is 3-0 with wins over Marquette, Gardner Webb, and Coppin State. And all three of their wins have been pretty convincing.

I think all of last night's results were touched on above, pluse George Mason leading at the half today (on ESPNU or watch espn app)
Lipscomb (+8) @ Miami (OH)
Duke (-9.5) vs VCU (2k classic)
Charleston Southern @ Arkansas
Wright St (+28.5) @ Kentucky (for the few interested in the team across town)
X (+5) @ Michigan (Can a big boulder just fall on Crisler arena and ruin both programs?)

George Mason suddenly remembers that they are an A10 team these days, and revert to the Paul Hewit days and fall behind by 10 several times in the 2nd half. They're new coach reminds them that no, they may be an A10 team now, but they are going to start playing like they did when they were in the CAA and points to the CAA logo on the court as a matter of emphasis and they storm back to go up 5. Okie stat ties it on a 3 with about 15 seconds to go.
Which Gmason squad will show up on the last possession? this new confident bunch or the one under Hewitt that found new and creative ways to lose ball games (well everything but the Karl Hobbs "lets see if we can sneak a 6th man on the court" move)
EDIT: Terrible final possession, BG would have been proud, 35' 3 pointer clanks off the rim and they head to OT. Okie st got away with the refs not recognizing a called time out, which would have been 1 too man and resulted in a technical. Shades of Chris Weber

George Mason's PG tears them apart in OT, Patriots win by 3.
Mason has a really solid looking post player, look like they've got some potentially, certainly better than they've been the last few seasons.

Bizarro World...Mason beats Okie St... Duquesne up by 25 over Penn St midway thru the 2nd half...VCU leading Duke at the half (ok that last one may not be as big a stretch as the first two). Don't these A10 teams know they're playing P5 teams?

VCU 18 fouls and Duke 9 fouls -- Duke is playing defense every bit as aggressive as VCU. That is the difference in the game.
The A-10 and Dayton need some games like this for RPI.

That game was almost unwatchable. _avier throws it at the rim, waltzes in and takes the offensive rebound, clangs it a few more times, and eventually either gets fouled or makes a layup.
Michigan was ranked #24?! They play like a bunch of sissies. Looks like they recruited players from the football team to play basketball this season.

Not good. If Matta walks.....be it his back or nudging, we all know what happens next. i hope this administration finds a way around it.

If Matta exits and if tOSU offers Archie and if he accepts I suspect one of the current assistants has a head coaching gig at UD. And if that were to happen this is probably one if the better years for it to occur. Continuity on staff likely limits transfers and only one incoming recruit. Much better than years with larger recruiting classes.
I doubt there is much UD can do if tOSU and Archie want to get hitched.

OSU has 1 senior and 1 junior...the future is very bright for whoever coaches them the next couple of years.

Please, stay on topic
Yes, I know all threads get hijacked at some point. Been guilty here a few times. But can we please keep the Games on Note thread on track, at least a few more months. This is one I click on every time on line, and do not need to be depressed with the thoughts of Archie leaving, or whatever the next off topic subject is.
Thank you, Now back to your originally scheduled programming.

Matta has had talent the last few years but OSU has not played to their potential. Lack of chemistry has been an issue.

tOSU is (and will always be) a football-first big corporate school. They lost at home to Arlington and nobody cares. Does not remind me of an Archie Miller-type environment...

"Up to their potential" at tOSU (per tOSU fair-weather hoops fans) a final 4 appearance!
Matta has earned a lot of latitude----I hope he expends it! Future is bright for his young squad.

Appreciate the comments on staying on topic. But this tOSU loss should be under the heading of "Games of Monumental Note 2015/2016". UT Arlington is basically a break even squad in their own hood, but a bottom feeder in Ohio State's scheme of things.
This was a horrid embarrassment for tOSU.
I don't believe Arch would leave as long as he feels his efforts at UD are on the upswing each season. When he feels he is tapped out on recruiting, then we should worry. If this Freshman class is any indication, our arrow is still pointing up.

A-10 could go 7-1 today. 4-1 right now; St. Bonnie's beating Loyola (Md) 2H; Rhody destroying Cleveland St. in 1H; St. Louis tied with St. Francis in 1H.

7-1 for the A-10 with only St Joes losing late to Fla.
0-3 for N. Fla, Miami (Ohio), and Furman. Unfortunately, Chattanooga down 4 with 5 minutes go to Illinois.
So if they lose, 6-1 for non-UD A-10, and 0-4 OOC = 6-5 for opponents which is ok.
