Vcu 2

I think everyone expects these two teams to play twice more this year - on Friday and again in November for the A10 tournament championship match. Based on what we have left, which includes some matches Against 200 rpi teams that will pull our rpi down some even when we win those matches ( we dipped to 30 for about 24 hours after beating SLU), my best guess is we have to win one of the VCU matches. Assuming we trade care of all our other matches, if we beat VCU this Friday and take a loss in the A10 tourney, I think our rpi holds up and we get an at-large bid.

If we don’t win Friday, and we don’t win the A10 tourney, it will be close, but I think we drop to high 30s and I don’t think we get in. Of course if beat Them in the A10 Championship we won’t need an at large bid.

All that said, I want to win both. We have the talent to play with just about everyone, but we need to play cleaner volleyball, meaning we are giving up too many points with errors. We can terminate points against anyone. And we have played sets against Top 15 teams where we have committed only a handful of errors. We just haven’t done it consistently. I’ve been charting out our errors for the Top 50 matches we’ve played this year plus the first VCU match. Looking at batches of errors within a rolling 10 points, if we can limit the errors to three or less within a 10 point batch, we are very, very good in those sets and only once have we lost a set under those guidelines. You’re not going to be error free, but if we can clean up our side of the net some we can play with anyone.

My short take: we have nobody to point the finger at but ourselves if we dont get the job done. We may have 3 cracks at VCU. If we're legitimately the better team, we win 2 of them. If we're not, we don't. When the dust settles, you are what your record and results say you are.

VCU is 4th national in block as a team averaging just under 3 per set. The also rank first in the A10 in Aces per set at almost 1.5. We aren’t a great blocking team or a great serving team.

On the flip side, UD ranks in the Top 20 nationally in kills per set and hitting percentage which is the best at UD in the last decade at .280. We can and have terminated balls for points against some of the best teams in the country. VCUs block will challenge us, but we have hitters. We have to pass well to give our setters all options to keep their block guessing where the ball is going. We have to control their serve.

They will get their blocks and they have some good hitters too. We will get ours. This match will come down to managing errors. We have to clean up our side of the net.

Another factor is we have Olivia in the line up. She wasn’t available last Match. Also, I think last match was the first weekend Amelia was out, so we’ve had some time to work with the current rotation. We do need to get the ball to Olivia more than we have so far. Get her more envolved in the offense. It will help keep the block off our pin hitters.

Time to get back to being the best team in the A10. This is the regular season championship match. Time to play championship volleyball. Jump on VCU early.

VCU takes it 3-2 with a non-competitive set 5. Bottom line is VCU is the class of the A10 again this year. Its not up for debate. Results matter and they have owned us in all the critical moments the last two seasons. You can whine about it or tip your cap. We had a 2-1 lead. Right where we wanted to be and couldnt close the door.

Im thinking we need to win out and make the A10 Finals at worst. In theory we should be able to do that. How the math works out by then depends on how the rest of college volleyball does as well. By then we'll know if we need to win the tourney title or not.

Again, we're young and inexperienced. We lack size up front and lack another experienced hitter to complement Bruns. Papesh is just a pup and you cant expect her to be that player yet. Our best days remain ahead of us. But, we do need to win more of these close ones -- this used to be a Flyer calling card when things went into a 5th set. I think time will be on our side.

It does. It reminds me of 2008. Back then the A10 was ruled be UD and SLU. And both went to the NCAAs that ear and I think the next. Those were the last time the A10 had two bids. But in 2008 we could not beat SLU. We had a lot of Sophomores in our rotation that year. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores in our line up this year. SLU and VCU have more veteran teams. However, we went up to Chicago in the Spring f 2009 and in spring play, which is 3 sets, we beat them. We haven’t lost to them since.

We will get there. First match this year was 4 sets. We took this one to five. However, we didn’t play well the last two sets. In the fifth we gave them 6 of their first 10 points and ended up with 8 errors in the fifth. More than half of their 15 points. You can give up 3... maybe 4 errors in a fifth set and win. You can’t give them 8 points.

The positive for the night was we hung with the #4 blocking team in the country. They had 11. We had 10.5. Both teams also had 5 Aces and 5 service errors each. They lead the A10 in Aces. We were at the bottom - maybe 9th. And I’m pretty sure we have more service errors than anyone in the A10. For this match we put up good numbers in these areas.

What’s done is done. We need to refocus and win the last 4 A10 matches and play really clean volleyball. All three matches should be sweeps. Keep working hard getting ready to upset VCU when it counts most in the A10 Championship.
