SHHHH! It's Supposed To Be A Secret

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- Somebody needs to come up with a new name for what were originally supposed to be “Secret Scrimmages” held by most college hoops squads now, in lieu of one of their public exhibition games.

Granted, they are not open to the public, but when Jeff Goodman of Stadium.com publishes his annual comprehensive list of all the “Not-So-Secret Scrimmages”:

It’s clearly time to call them something else.

Invisible Intramurals?
No TV Tilts?
You-Can’t-See-Me Meetings?

The results, game summaries and sometimes even box scores of these glorified practices are usually posted on the net. In addition, many schools have decided to host charity “Secret Scrimmages” and live- stream the exhibition on the web and charge a fee to view it, with all proceeds going to a good cause.

With all of this in mind, AG and the Dayton Flyers will travel this Saturday to far away Granville, Ohio to meet the man he replaced at VCU, Jeff Capel and his Pitt Panthers on neutral ground at Denison University.

The ”Secret Scrimmage” will be followed by the more traditional exhibition game vs. Capital at the 2/3 of the way renovated UD Arena on Friday, November 2nd. And then things get real on Saturday the 7th when North Florida comes to town.

Bring it!

-- Speaking of Jeff Goodman, he recently polled a handful of veteran coaches in every league to determine the best JOBS in each league, all the way down to the ones that are the most difficult. Here is his assessment of the Atlantic 10:

-- Lots of top-notch HS programs will face off in this year’s Flyin’ to the Hoop:

-- Fans will love ESPN’s ‘Basketball: A Love Story’:

I caught Episode 3 last night and it dealt extensively with the Roger Brown/Connie Hawkins situation in the early ‘60s that had a severe impact on the careers of Hawk, Brown, Doug Moe and others. My respect for the Celtics’ legendary coach and GM Red Auerbach went down a notch after viewing this series. Connie Hawkins enrolled at Iowa but never played. He sued the NBA and Auerbach called Iowa alum Don Nelson into his office and asked if he was going to testify on Hawk’s behalf at his trial. When Nelson answered in the affirmative, Red told Nellie that if he did so, Nelson would never play in the NBA again. That’s collusion, Arnold.

-- Sean Kelly is a fellow member of Red Sox MB The Sons of Sam Horn. He wrote this fond remembrance of former Sox pitcher and his college baseball coach Jack Lamabe:

This world needs more Jack Lamabes.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
