The Dog Days of Summer

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Sit in the shade, have a nice cold lemonade and enjoy:

-- TSN Mike with the newsflash: Foreign trips like the one that UD is on right now give college teams a huge advantage! Who knew?

http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-bas...-college-teams

-- Had a chance to play two-on-two hoops with former Flyer footballer Mel Taylor again last night, with results similar to the one described here on “FTS” previously:

http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18534

I had printed out a copy of the above blog piece on Mel and left in my car for the next time that I saw him. I gave it to Mel last night and told him to read it when he got home.

-- Also got to play hoops with this big fella the other day:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/michiganprep...Bingham-112291

He was kinda easy to spot—6’7” with a Bunyanesque beard and wearing a “BINGHAM” jersey. I asked Urban where he was going to school and he replied “Houston Baptist” which is interesting because his Rivals profile says Prairie View (altho I think that was his original choice for football). Bingham said he doesn’t leave for Texas until August 23rd, which seems kinda late for a scholarship hoopster, doesn’t it?

-- I doubt that UD’s Tom Blackburn or Don Donoher made “The Bleacher Report Top 100 Coaches in College Basketball History” list, but I’ll never know, because I refuse to click thru a 102 page slide show:

-- If Archie Miller recruiting target Terry Rozier says that Louisville “is my dream school” I think it is safe to say that we can forget about him donning the Red and Blue:

The same goes for big man Mitch McGary from IN and Daniel Dingle from NY, as both players have narrowed their list of schools and UD is no longer on them.

Next!

-- On a more uplifting note, here are a couple of videos on kids that actually do have UD on their list -- Ray Lee of Huntington (WV) Prep, late of Romulus (MI) HS:

And his future Huntington Prep teammate Javontae Hawkins, late of Flint (MI) Powers:

-- Luke Winn at SI provides some interesting research on the epidemic (his word) of HS players who waffle on their college commitments:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...nds/index.html

-- I have never heard of this before: the school board at suburban Walled Lake has eliminated return trips for their HS teams from all sporting events:

-- The Woodward Dream Cruise is next Saturday, August 20th, so if you’re a car guy or gal, it’s not too late to make plans to hit the Motown ‘burbs for the absolute best way to spend a day. Here is my “FTS” on the subject from seven years ago:

-- Given the crazy week that was on Wall Street, nobody provides a better commentary on the situation than “The E*TRADE Baby”:

http://www.collegehumor.com/video/64...ses-everything

-- You think the US economy is screwed up? We have absolutely nothing on the monetary toilet bowl that is Greece. Unlike the financial tank-jobs by Iceland, Ireland and Germany that he has written about previously, Moneyball author Michael Lewis finds this Greek tragedy was produced by a sin of omission rather than commission.

The problem: the Greeks are systematically predisposed to not paying their taxes:

http://www.vanityfair.com/business/f...-bonds-201010#

-- Growing up, Tom “Satch” Sanders of the Celtics was the epitome of “cool.” After the Celtics met with JFK at the White House in 1963, “Satch” told the President:

"Take it easy, baby.''

Satch is being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame:

-- You gotta love “The Muddy Chicken”:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...67/1/index.htm

-- I totally agree with Jason Gay of The Wall Street Journal -- the best way to enjoy golf is to only play once a year:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...030802784.html

-- “The Sweet Tweet of the Week” comes from UD Assistant Coach Kevin Kuwik during the Flyers’ ten day, four game tour of Europe:

“Flyers win 95-49. Led 21-2 early and 46-18 at the half. @BrianVonderhaar and @WhiteFlightt (Mitch Ausmus) in starring roles.”

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
