Who Will The Offense Revolve Around?

This is a good question...most people would say Wright..but he lacks experience and a mid range game to be effective as of yet.

The other popular choice would be Marcus who will be the undisputed leader on the court this year.

It could also be a darkhouse like Kurt or a PG...who knows

MJ and CW that is where the offense will be , not one like last year, if PW can shoot the 3, like it has been advertise, thats something more a team will have to deal with us on

I'm going to say 4 people and 1 of them coming off the Bench!

SG- Marcus Johnson (12ppg)

SF- Chris Wright (14ppg)

PF- Charles Little (10ppg)

SG/SF- Paul Williams (8ppg)

I think we are going to see a wide distribution on the shots taken. Chris Wright scores a lot from his rebounding and put backs.

Here are stats for the returners from last year:

field goals made/field goal attempts per 40 minutes played:

7.64/12.69 Chris Wright
5.87/11.81 Charles Little
4.42/9.24 Marcus Johnson
4.07/7.72 Kurt Huelsman
3.53/7.95 London Warren
4.42/11.33 Mickey Perry
2.18/5.58 Devin Searcy

I think rather than "who" I think it's more like "what", as in motion. It seems to me that with our athleticism we will see a lot of running in the open court and a lot of motion in the half court with multiple players getting their share of shots. I don't think BG designs his offense to target players now that Roberts is gone.

Against man to man I hope that the offense will revolve around the point guard. I don't care if he averages two points a game, if he can create opportunities for others that will be enough. BG's offense requires players who will take the ball to the basket when opportunities present themselves. I think there are plenty of opportunities in most games.

Against a zone Chris Wright is the man. You can run him through seams in the zone and he can quickly catch it and pass it to someone with a better opportunity because the defense must collapse on him. UD was actually getting pretty good at attacking zones before Chris was injured.

I agree, except for the part about his experience and mid-range game.

He averaged over 10 ppg last year in only 20 minutes per game, from a freshman who was still figuring it out and playing behind a senior who dominated the offense.

His jumper is beautiful and his long-range form gives the ball perfect rotation. He'll be taking a fair number of 3's, jumpers, and everything else this year.

Don't forget leading the team in FT shooting.

With his ability to get to the hole, I predict that Wright will set a season record for most free throws attempted. Fouling may be the only way to contain him.

My thoughts exactly. While no one will shoot the rock like BRob I think, I hope, the offense will be more fluid with more people getting involved.

I kind of still wish he was wearing #23 this season. There is just something about seeing that number fly through the air that gives one chills - especially when it ends with a dunk in the face of a buckeye.

Hopefully not one single player. We need 3-4 viable scoring options every night.

Weave

We will run "the weave" correctly and penetration opportunities will open up over and over for MJ, CW, LW, and whoever else is in the rotation to attack the basket. KH and CL will make a living on dump off passes and rebounds as thier defenders have to help stop the penetration. MJ will pile up points with the 12-15 ft pull up jumper. CW will feast on 15ft standing still free throws.
We ran it well at the start of last season because CW and MJ's first instinct was to turn and attack. Once CW went down, we were left relying more on BR stepping back.

My initial thought was the same, that we would see a lot of zone this year. But when you think about the offensive rebounding ability on this team, playing zone against us might be the worst thing you could do. Rebounding is much tougher to do as a defense in a zone, and with 3 or 4 dudes crashing the boards with 40 inch verticals, it might be a recipe for disaster. On this team, a missed shot could be our best play. Especially against a zone.

That doesn't mean i don't have concerns this year, but it does give me some hope that we can still make teams pay for playing zone against us. It will just require huge efforts on the boards. If we take the open shots and we go hard for rebounds, the zone won't last long.

Now, should one or two guys step up and prove they can hit an outside shot, we're really in business. We just need steady point guard play and we could be a top 3 team in the A10. If we don't get it, i don't know where we'll be.

Chris Wright is going to take this team to new heights. MJ isn't afraid to take the ball to the rack and score. There are tons of scoring options on this team. A steady PG will be what makes the difference for this team. Don't forget about Mickey Perry coming off the bench to spike threes. If these guys buckle down and play defense, this is a scary good basketball team. If Paul Williams is a stud, he needs to play significant minutes. Remember when we wasted Roberts' freshman year.

Brian Gregory's coaching is the most important thing this year. Will he change his slow it down style? Will he use the athletic lineup in an occassional full court press? Will he be willing to blow people off the court with fast-breaks, dunks and steals? Will he continue to give guys minutes that have no business being out there? (binnie) Will he let a group of five guys get into a groove and not make a mass substitution? Will he let Charles Little start a game? Will we build a working lead in the first half and immediately substitute 3 or 4 guys and lose the lead? (has happened in 85% of BG's career games) Will BG be willing to step on the opponents throat from the opening tip and never let up until garbage time? There is absolutely no reason why this group of players shouldn't make the big dance this season. No more get out of jail free cards for BG. Watch how the game is going, make only necessary lineup adjustments, use some common sense and blow people away. It's that simple.

I would guess that 85% of big leads dwindle away in NCAA basketball games on the whole. It is a game of runs, especially with the 3pt shot. Only the eltie teams slam the door with a big lead.

Potentially a complete lack of outside shooting and potentially a complete lack of adequate PG play?

But other than that we're a lead pipe lock.

Thumbs up Nice to be back!

Time Warner finally got us back online last night! 10 days with no phone, internet and tv was a big change for us, but at least we had lights!

I think that the best thing for our team this year is to spread the love when it comes to scoring points. We need as many players as we can to score 8-10 points each with extra points from CW, MJ and our PG (whomever it may be). If we can do that, then we are less likely to see the double and triple team on our players. That really hurt us last year with Brian. I really think this year will be a great and exciting year for the team (and the fans). Go Flyers!

The good news is that most analysts are listing the Flyers as an "upgrade" to your report on both counts. With Lowrey and the shooters we have added, plus Wright and the Johnson's improved shooting, we are now listed at "market perform".
