Top JUCO transfers of all time

thought this might be a good thread with all the discussion about young Mr Mcneil... he has an important decision, and I respect the fact he is taking his time, lot of pressure on him to be sure....

so, I posted that whether he chooses UD or not, he would NOT be the greatest JUCO transfer, or even the best shooting JUCO transfer we have had....

There have been others, but the first one that comes to my mind is Sedric Toney. He played 2 seasons with us, and for his two seasons at Dayton, he shot nearly 50% from the FIELD, darn darn good for a guard... 49%, something like that....

He would up being a 3rd round pick in the NBA draft by Atlanta? pretty sure...

who else were very good JUCO transfers? Was Rob Lowery a JUCO? unsure about that.

Showing my age, but I’m pretty sure the late George Jackson (R.I.P., Big Guy) and J.D. Grigsby were both JUCO transfers. Vincennes (IN), IIRC. Jackson could clean the glass for our Flyers like few others. Ryan Perryman & Donnie May are the only others I can think of that are in that same class of “elite rebounder” with Big George. And J.D. has been a great ambassador for the program for a long, long time.

T-Bone, you nailed it. The late George Jackson was something to behold under the basket. And the first African-American to join the program after the Torain/Waterman controversy. Anyone in the stands for his first game, the first game in the Arena, 12/6/69, knew he knew what rebounding was all about. Tyler JC in Texas, I think, but a local, native Daytonian. Forget which high school. Most remember him for scoring over 30 (compared to Austin Carr's 49) at ND, next-to-last game of the '71 season. Even though we lost, it got us into the NIT.

The one and only Tom Archdeacon with a loving profile of George Jackson after his passing in 2016:

https://www.daytondailynews.com/spor...MonT4XWHF27ZL/

Big George attended Roth HS (same as Donald Smith and JD Grigsby) and Kilgore JC in TX.

And Bucky wasn't lying when he said George couldn't shoot a lick from the FT line. Boy, was he an adventure from the charity stripe, but he more than made up for it with his rebounding prowess.

The article references another JC transfer--Tom Crosswhite.

And in typical Don Donoher fashion, he stayed close to George until the end.

George Jackson definitely! Great rebounder but couldn't score more than 5 feet from the hoop. Remember him vs. Notre Dame. I didn't realize he had passed. RIP big guy. One other is Tom Crosswhite.

There must be another 6'10" guy named Thiago Cordiero out there, because I don't remember him ever doing this at UD:

My all-time favorite JC transfer will forever be 6'8" Willie Johnson...he thought he was Magic Johnson. Only lasted 1 year in the late 70s/early 80s. Not very good, but fun to watch and a great personality.

Chip Jones might have been at or near the top of this list. Averaged better than 20 points a game but eventually became an academic casualty.

That is a GREAT article you have referenced Swampy! I remember George as a very humble person. But boy could he REBOUND! I was a junior at UD when George came on board. He may have left us but he will never be forgotten! And by the way Tom Crosswhite teamed up very well with George and Kenny May.

Tom Crosswhite? I thought he played on the Freshman team and all three on the varsity? What am I missing?

Edited: I read the article and apparently he didn't play his freshman season with UD. I never realized he was a JC transfer.

Hiwassee Community College. I think he’s coaching now at a small Christian college in Cincy. And I believe he did eventually get his degree from UD. I also think he might be the last Flyer to average over 20 points in a season.

Really the beginning of the end for O'Brien. Could never understand how he couldn't keep his best player in school. You just don't hear about a bunch of guys getting booted in the middle of the year.

I can attest though that he and Brian Donoher put together one hell of an intramural team and ran rough shod through the UD intramural league all the way to a championship....probably a little unfair.

A great article, from a great writer (and Flyer alum), about a great player (and also Flyer alum). And yes, Big George came to UD via Kilgore JC, and he was the first noteworthy African-American recruit to come here after the uncomfortable departures of Torain and Waterman. You could say, his commitment to UD opened the door for J.D. Grigsby, Smitty, Allen Elijah, Johnny D., and countless others to come to UD and show their skills on behalf of the Red and Blue. God love you, Big George. <3.
