… I’m just worried about Georgia. So I’m guessing this game will probably tip off about four Eastern? I know they typically like to have a game on at midnight following Monday night football so that’s how I came up with that.

Okay, looks from what I'm reading on Twitter is that Dayton/Georgia would get the loser of Kansas/Chaminade
That first game is huge now

The Dayton/Georgia game is paired with Michigan State/Va Tech game on the bracket. Any matchup with Kansas/Chaminade wouldn't be until day 3.

People on here do not like to search or read other threads apparently. Yes, Dayton is a 3 seed. No, they do not play chaminade if they lose first game

Maui Jim Maui Invitational
Dates: Nov. 25, 26 & 27, 2019
Site: Lahaina Civic Center / Lahaina, HI
First-round matchups:
Dayton vs. Georgia
Michigan State vs. Virginia Tech
Kansas vs. Chaminade
UCLA vs. BYU
Team to beat: Michigan State is going to be preseason No. 1 in a number of rankings, and the Spartans are experienced, versatile and have Wooden Award favorite Cassius Winston.
Sleeper team: It was overlooked at the time, but when Yoeli Childs announced he was returning to BYU on NBA draft deadline day, it put the Cougars in position to be a factor. TJ Haws and Jake Toolson can fill it up on the wings.
Player to watch: All eyes will be on Georgia's Anthony Edwards, the top-five recruit who spurned Kentucky to stay home and play for the Bulldogs.
Something for the college hoops junkies: Michigan State and Kansas are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the latest Way-Too-Early Updated Preseason Top 25 rankings -- and could face off in the title game. -- Jeff Borzello

No “true” seed but it’s based off of NET (believe it’s NET but may have been a different metric) which Dayton would be 3.
Edit. Somewhere I saw an article and listed ud as #3. Just looked at ast years net rankings and I was off. In order it was MSU (5), vetch (12), Kansas (17), ud (70), BYU (89), UCLA (114), Georgia (115)

If this conversation were going on in the thread that already exists for this topic you'd know via my schedule updates that this is incorrect.
I miss the enzo days. A new thread about the tournament itself seems fine, but the pairings? Clearly redundant.

I think this is the best possible bracket for us.
1) Probable, though tough win in the first game over a big name SEC team.
2) Unless we get blown out by 30, MSU game is a "no lose" situation: A win is obviously a season changer, and playing them tough and losing still helps us. Also, chances of getting blown out by 30 go down on a neutral court, as opposed to their court, and they also go down because they will be more likely to pull good players earlier in a blowout during the middle of a three day tourney.
3) We will almost definitely avoid the Silverswords.
4) Also, weird stuff happens on an island a million miles away in a high school gym with no air conditioning. Who know what could happen, especially when you have possibly the most athletic player in the tourney, who everyone will underestimate. Stranger things have happened than a UD tourney championship...

Correction: It is now air conditioned. At least it was 2013. In 2000 and 2003, it was not. That doesn't make it cool inside, but it's not nearly as hot as it was 16 years ago.

Georgia should be a young team with a 6 man freshman class (5 in the Top 100) and grad transfer guard from Northeastern.
Get them early before they've built any chemistry and this could really pay dividends down the line once they get more experience under their belt.

team logo GEORGIA
Odds: 100-1
Why to take a chance on the Bulldogs: Georgia underwent a major roster reconstruction this offseason. and who knows how it will go for Tom Crean and Co. They should be better, but improving off an 11-win season shouldn't be all that challenging. The reason this one's worth considering is Anthony Edwards -- UGA's prized recruit who will be a freshman. If he's able to dominate, he could take the Dawgs to a new level.

Pretty funny that GA is 100-1 and we are 1000-1. We will almost certainly be favored in that game, possibly by double digits.

Tickets for the Dayton games through the official website are sold out - way to go, Flyer Fans!
But we'd like to go. Does anyone have a suggestion for tickets other than Stubhub?

UGA tickets are still available. Being football season, there will likely be walk up available game by game.
Dayton East Bleachers also gone.

So my read is .. UD, MSU, and Kansas now have equal amounts of ticket holders ... good company to be in ... but IMO normally UD has the most ticketholders at these ESPN events.
It will be a challenge to out cheer MSU and KS fans ... but it will be possible if UD surprises them with our play on the court.

I just called the University of Georgia, the man I spoke with said that they are only supposed to sell their tickets as a 3 game pack for $469 until they are sold out. But, you can call back closer to the date of the game, and they might sell you individual game tickets if they have not sold all their tickets.
$469 is really high, I forgot to ask what was included with that.
Call 706-542-9045.

Thanks I'll do that. And $469 is probably face value - it's the lowest price tickets I saw on the official site for 3 games of a particular team.

I remember going to Maui in the old days and buying full session tickets for every day. 12 games in total. You could even get tickets day of the games as some would walk out and not use their later session tix. It was pretty affordable. And games were broken into two sessions so you could buy an all morning or afternoon session ticket to see two games. Now everything is mostly ala carte. Just watching your own team in three games costs an arm and a leg.
No wonder EA Sports could charge $75 a game and Maui Jim can charge $275 for shades.

MSU and KU tickets and travel packages were never available on the website.
Those 2 schools required contacting the universities athletic booster department.
In short, the school bought all the packages and doled them out like UD does for NCAA tournament tickets. Either big money gets first option to buy or they are rewarding some mega donors.
That being the case, UD will have the most spirited fans. UGA fans will be talking about the A&M game from the previous Saturday and looking forward to the GT game on the coming Saturday. It's SEC FOOTBALL SEASON!

Don't discount Kansas fans... they are always in full force as well.
UD-KU... what a match-up that would be, on the court and in the stands - easily worth the price of admission !

Well fellow Flyer Fans.... Courtesy of a very generous Delta credit for a bump, I've just booked a last minute flight to Maui for the Maui Invitational. Going solo and still investigating lodging and ticket options. Looks like Game 1 tickets can be secured on Stubhub or Craigslist, but who knows about the rest of the tournament for the Flyers.
Note: I'm feeling quite positive this year ..... as are many of you
I have a couple of questions for those going / have gone in the past:
1. Is the golf tournament any fun? I'm a bogey player and would love to hit a round with a few UD alum if possible.
2. If anyone has last minute changes, I'm interested in a single ticket to any and all games.
3. I'm looking at VRBO condos around Lahaina (or I have an option for a discounted room at Westin or Sheraton). Does anyone have experience with VRBO in Maui?
Thanks much for any help!

Price of $80.00 seems extreme to me. I know Hawaii is expensive but for appetizers? Oh, and it’s a cash bar to boot. Add in a dozen mai tai’s - yikes!

We'll be skipping the $80 snack session on Sunday.
Lahaina Sports Bar at 843 Waine'e St, Lahaina (Located in Old Lahaina Center) will be our preferred destination for the NFL on Sunday morning. This is the website if you are interested: mauisportsbar.com
We first met the owner back in 2000 when he had the Bamboo Bar and Grill. Good guy. Mostly a locals place. Back then, they had $0.99 AmberBock pints at Happy Hour. Prices have gone up a bit, but not to the $80 level. Also pretty sure they are more cost effective than Black Rock Sports Bar.

Sure wish I had known that the Lahaina Civic Center was so close to the Sheraton when I was there a few years ago over the summer, I would have tried to check it out. After I looked up where the LCC was, I was told that I wrong, and that the basketball games were played back by the airport. I got bad info.

Sort of off-topic...I was not aware of this...UCLA is playing in Maui this year...Tennessee hc Rick Barnes indicated at the SEC media day that he was offered the UCLA job, but UCLA would not pay his buyout, so he chose to stay at TN.
https://www.vegasinsider.com/college.../story/1985672:
Barnes nearly left Tennessee for UCLA after leading the Volunteers to a Sweet 16 berth last season. Barnes said afterward that he probably would have left if UCLA officials had been willing to pay the buyout owed as part of his Tennessee contract. UCLA hired Mick Cronin away from Cincinnati instead.

I am happy to see an official UD event - last year there was not one prior to the games. There was a nice pre-event meeting for Wisconsin and Buttler had a nice organization going. So again happy to see an official UD event. $80 is a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of it.
If you are going make sure to book your Thanksgiving dinner reservation - they started taking them today. Just let them know you want the reservation for the Thanksgiving buffet at the Sheraton. Just 35 more days.

Apparently conflicting versions of the Barnes/UCLA story...
Barnes: says he never accepted the UCLA job due to UCLA balking at his buyout
UCLA: Barnes did accept the job offer...UCLA agreed to pay his buyout...but he later asked for more money, and he backed out after he had accepted the job offer
https://www.tennessean.com/story/spo...ls/3622160002/:
Bolch’s story goes on to say that UCLA pulled out of discussions after Barnes asked for more money, “even after Barnes said he would accept the previously agreed-upon terms in an attempt to salvage the deal.”

If I am a TN fan, I would be thinking that Barnes is a disloyal piece of crap who will jump at the next great offer. At least keep things private Rick.

I watched both the Duke vs Kansas game and the Michigan State vs Kentucky games on TV, last night. It was wonderful/glorious to watch live college basketball again. I am glad that the college basketball season has started again. Both of our potential opponents in Hawaii lost in these games. Both Michigan State and Kansas lost.
The Michigan State guard, Cassius Winston, basically carried his team on his back. Dayton’s four guards, Crutcher, Chatman, Watson and Cohill will need to defend him/ hassle him into turnovers.
Kansas has two very big guys underneath. Azubuike and De Souza are truck loads of muscle and size. Tshimanga, Toppin and Johnson must block out.
Hawaii is going to be key to the season. A victory over Georgia puts us into grand opportunities to play really significant games on the national stage. We need to grab the opportunity!

Outside of Winston, I was not overly impressed by Michigan St, but that's not uncommon for an Izzo team early in the season.

Georgia’s stud freshman Anthony Edwards scored 24 points in his debut last night — a 91-72 win over Western Carolina. In other Georgia news, senior guard Jordan Harris will miss the team’s first nine games (which includes Maui) for disciplinary reasons.

Does anyone know where we are next year as far as pre-season tourney? Has it been decided yet? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

Only thing I see on the 2020 field is that Memphis postponed this year's tournament to play in Myrtle Beach next season.

Coach said on his show tonight that before they left the Bahamas last year they were invited to come back as soon as possible. I think there is a rule about number of years between trips off the mainland. Not sure how many, 3 or 4 maybe??

Teams can now participate in an exempt tournament every year, but cannot compete in the same event more than every fourth year.

Was hoping next year would be the Tourn in DisneyWorld.
I believe it is now called the Orlando Invitational. It will have been over 4 years for that one.

I was there the last time we played in that one and the team down I-75 cleaned our clock! We had no answer for Freshman PG Edmond Sumner but now we have Jalen and Rodney and won't have to be embarrassed.

Rumored schedule:
2020 Myrtle Beach
2021 Orlando
2022 Atlantis
Charleston may be in the mix as well and these may be out of order. I don't recall the exact details.

These always fall during the two months of the year my wife can not get out of her office. Who is organizing the official UDPride golf trip to coincide with one of these tourneys?

Just saw Seth Greenberg and crew in studio discussing the Maui tournament. They talked about Michigan State and how great Anthony Edwards is, about Kansas, and about UCLA. You think maybe a guy like Obi, who is averaging 23 points and nine rebounds, has 15 dunks, and is shooting 70% from the floor might get a small mention when highlighting things to watch for in Hawaii. Nothing Flyer related was brought up. I hope UD plays well and Obi goes off.

I think and I thought earlier that many people felt that the Dayton season would be defined by how well our transfers performed. This transfer list included Tshimanga. We the people (fandom) in pursuit of happiness have seen nothing of Mr. Tshimanga. But coincidentally, neither has any of our Maui opponents. Wouldn’t it be great that he was able to play and was actually GOOD? Wouldn’t that be a surprise to these teams in Maui and these talking heads who fail to mention our GREAT DAYTON team!
