First Four Thread

I started looking at the 8 teams coming to Dayton for the First Four. Goodness, it is like a trip down memory lane. Let me start with a couple. I am sure there are many more.

Wake Forest - Of course we all remember Skip Prosser from _avier before he went to coach at Wake. However, I do remember current coach Danny Manning playing in the NCAA tournament at the arena in 1986. He was soooo smoooooth.

UC Davis - This one is really painful. Current UC Davis head coach Jimmy Les played for Bradley with one of the best in Hersey Hawkins. Les was pretty good himself. Bradley came into the arena with Hawkins and Les. It was Les to Hawkins for a 35 footer at the buzzer to beat the Flyers. I can still see that shot. Painful.

UNO - Katrina nearly wiped the school off the map. Were going to downgrade to D-III or D-II. New UNO prez saved the day and got things stabilized. Now they are in the big dance. Their current coach was here for the first play-in game with Northwestern State. He has good memories of it.

Did you graduate in 1869?

I remember that Bradley game. I met Hersey Hawkins before the game and got his autograph. He was a nice guy. I couldn't have been but 10 years old.

Whatever team was on the charter bus pulling into the Marriot at 240 today, hope none of you crapped your pants like I did when your bus driver cut right in front of me. Not sure how he missed my brightly colored full size truck heading north on Patterson, lucky for you I saw it coming, as everything flew off my seats and bounced around my truck, missed you by inches. Walk to the arena for your game if he is driving. I am home, time to drink

Don't know if it's been mentioned but I saw workers laying down the court sections on the news and noticed the floor they were covering was colored in Columbia blue accents instead of red. Somebody fill me in here. Surely that's not the original floor from 1969? And yes, I called Rollo surely

Thanks Flyer...figured I would sit here and read up on basketball while watching basketball. The support from people I have never met along with the University, family, and friends has been amazing. After services Friday I can only imagine there will be a few beverages and a UD game to watch!! That's how he would have wanted it for sure.

I think New Orleans should have fouled on that last possession.

Think? That was severe coaching malpractice, but the coach was probably busy making sure that one player didn't choke anymore of his teammates on the bench.

I didn't turn on the game until after the choking incident. Saw a clip after. What happened?

He got mad about something on an offensive possession and went after his teammate at the start of a timeout.

K-State - Wake box score says 11,855. Seemed like it was at least over 11k to me, so that sounds about right. A lot of people cleared out at halftime though.

I'm saying, "you've got to foul!" to my son, and he says no you don't. There was only like a 4 second differential. That was real stupid... basically cost them the game.

I know it also happened even earlier on an inbounds where the guard pushed him in the back to hurry up and get the ball back in play after MSM made a bucket. The big fella' took offense after he was pushed there..

I don't know if it cost them the game. If the FTs are made you still need a bucket but it definitely cost them any reasonable shot at a win. To me anything less than 8 differential you have to foul.

And to be honest NO got really lucky.I think in that situation they first need to try to trap/ double team immediately and go for a steal the first few seconds and they had a good chance of that or at least tying up the PG considering the PG being defended was only 5'4". You get a good double team on him and there's no way he can see over anyone.

When they failed to even do that and just let MSM take the air out the whole time, NO got really lucky to even have a possession left. Had that shot that MSM taken bounced around the rim another second or had a couple other hands deflected the ball that game is over..

The guy with the ball was only 5'4 but he wasn't exactly easy to double team. He did go off for 23.

I do agree that not extending the game by fouling was a mistake. There wasn't enough differential between shot clock and game clock. MSM did a good job by not taking the shot until the shot clock was about to expire. Take it with 5 or so left on the clock, now you have 6 or 7 left, and enough to do something after a rebound.

I would have liked to have seen how the last play would have turned out had the guy inbounding not overthrown it. The guy running the "fly" from the foul line looked wide open, and I suspect they were hoping to have the guy set deep catch and hit him going to the hoop. Would have been on NCAA reels like the Bryce Drew three for Valpo.

Did he overthrow it, or did the guy running to the ball overrun it? I could see either, or maybe a combination of both.

It seemed like MSM had the 2 shooters flashing to the wings pretty well covered, so I don't know who he was even going to throw it to.

No he wasn't but they did trap him a couple times in the game and he had to jump just to make another pass one time that almost got picked off and rushed another time in splitting the double only to dribble off his leg. The difference this time was he was not going to be nearly as aggressive due to making a game-changing mistake and probably would have not tried to make a pass due to it being stolen and would have tried to probably dribble out of that or just held onto it and wiggled a foul out of it. Either way, it's no different than what players are told in most of those situations which is to try and defend the play first and try for a steal and then lastly commit the foul..

Man listening to the NCAAt talk this morning (ESPN, Fox), I was amazed how the conversations started. It was as if the First Four didn't exist, didn't just happen.

Paraphrasing, "Now that the Tournament is getting under way" .....

What about those 8 teams and their fans? Did they not spend the time and money and input emotional feeling into the First Four games?

Those teams that played and lost ... were not a part of the Tourney?

I am glad that UD and the community shower the attention and interest on the players for their chance to play. Stories from players and coaches over the years noted how they were welcomed in Dayton.

Providing good memories to people that come to Dayton for this event .... priceless. The sporting world's diverted attention to the big event .... not so much.
