He probably has about the same chance as he did last year - not likely. But look what happened last year.

I think he can make it. He just has to continue to push it to the max like he did last year. That last roster spot can be earned, and he just has to show it.

There are a few notches on his belt that could make a difference. He excelled while playing for the Dakota Wizards. He finished the Warriors season on the roster with a breakout game even if it was against the Spurs second team. He's had another summer of shooting practice.
But last and not to be overlooked, Johnny Davis is the assistant coach for the Raptors. Chris has to show up with game, but Davis can make sure it's not overlooked in the numbers.

According to this site...
http://hoopshype.com/salaries/toronto.htm
...Toronto has 13 players under contract for this season and they have not yet signed either of their second round picks. It appears they will bring one of them to camp (Quincy Acy), but the other will stay in Europe.

It does not look like Toronto has any small forwards on their roster. They have at least 4 power forwards and three SG who are 6'6 or 6'7 but no SF. Not sure who else is in camp, but maybe he can get that last spot.

Don't they have the right to sign 15--or keep 15 under contract for the the season?

According to the DDN print edition, CW is playing in a charity game tonight at Trent Arena. Ohio vs Indiana All Stars. Dwight Anderson, Norris Cole and Daequan Cook are also playing.
Tipoff at 6:30PM and tickets are $15.
Wish I could make it, but I am already committed to the Dayton Revival concert. Seeing Wright and Anderson on the floor at the same time would be amazing.

Chris isn't under contract with the Raptor. Is it even certain he will be in their camp. Just playing on the summer league squad doesn't mean he'll get a camp invite.

Looks like he can book his flight to Toronto
From the Toronto Star:
" Chris Wright will receive a non-guaranteed camp invite from the Toronto Raptors".
-------------------------------
Contrary to some earlier thoughts, Chris is an Unrestricted Free Agent and GSW does not have an option to match whatever the Raptors might see fit to offer at some future date.

This will make it a little tougher on Wright. His old teammate gets signed to a partially guaranteed contract, whatever that means

Wright is going to be a bubble player until his jump shot is reliable. But today he has some intangibles working for him. Toronto is out of cap space, so whomever they choose to fill out the 14th and 15th spots will certainly be getting the minimum wage. That works in Wright's favor. CW's NBA defense and rebounding has improved to the point where he can really push "A" team players in practice. And everyone knows what a team player he is.
So lots of moving parts. But for Chris, and the spot he is looking to fill, it's a decent balance of pluses and minuses at this early point in the game.

Does anyone know what the requirements are to secure an NBA pension? Assume if Chris never plays another game he'll at least be eligible for something far down the road. In the majors it used to be, I think, 500 games - you had to be on a roster for 500 games. I think now you're eligible for a pension if you're on a roster for one game.

Got to keep working no matter what..
UConn's new coach, Kevin Ollie,....a guy not having CW's natural ability,....played in every BB minor league you can think of before finally catching on with an NBA team.
He played 13 NBA seasons,...for 12 different teams....never had more than a one year contract...frequently worked under ten day contracts,....was cut countless times....three different times by a single NBA coach.
Ollie earned over $20 million in his career...a career marked by exceptionally hard work and determination by a guy with marginal ability. Ollie is an example for all....if CW sticks with it like Ollie did, he'll make out OK.

The club already has 15 players under contract, oh wait, no, 16 with Jamaal Magloire's addition, and both McNeal and Wright are likely being brought in simply to enhance the level of competition in Halifax.

Guys, thoughts on what this may mean? Did he likely sign a contract similar to the one had last year with GS---and they are planning on using him in a similar capacity (bench player with time split with developemental league) or is it simply a 'necessity" of moving forward with training camp? Can we tell? Did they have to sign him to a contract before camp started?

At least he gets another look from an NBA team.
It's Wright's lease on NBA life to hang around, take advantage of what few opportunities might arise. Make himself visible with impact plays. Wait for the inevitable injuries for a possible opening.
Chris knows the conventional route that the draftees get to enjoy is not something he is afforded. These fringe gigs are his auditions.
His "contract" spells out his temporary condition of employment, and most specifically the Raptors limited injury liability.

NBA basketball on offense is a one on one game which is not a strength of Chris. If you can't create your own shot you need to add something else to the mix. In Chris's case it is athleticism and energy. Hopefully that will continue to be enough for him to play in the nba a long time.

Anyone hear anything similar?

CW with the dreaded DNP-Coach's Decision tonight vs. the Pistons. Of the 15 guys who dressed, only he and Kyle Lowry failed to see action for the Raptors.

On the plus side, Kyle Lowry is a no doubt about it member of the Raptors, so maybe only "no doubt" guys didn't play.
(Look, until UD loses their first winnable game, let's all be overly optimistic about everything!)

Has Wright played in a preseason game yet? I check the box scores daily and don't recall him getting any PT.
Which begs the question why he would sign with a team that had no need for him...or why a team would sign a player they don't intend on playing.
Agents are supposed to know better than to send a player to a team that doesn't want/need him.
One of my Sinclair math students is a Grigsby...a cousing to Chris. I'll ask her tonite if she's heard anything from or about him.

Per ESPN INSIDER this morning -
The Canadian Press reports the Toronto Raptors have waived guard Jerel McNeal and forward Chris Wright. McNeal played in one preseason game, while Wright never got of the bench.
The Raptors now have 16 players under contract and the team needs to get down to 15 by 5 PM ET on Oct. 29. There's a good chance Jamaal Magloire will not make the opening night roster.

Is this a serious comment? Do you really think a horrible NBA franchise is going to drag a bubble NBA player through camp just to keep him from being a 15th guy on another roster?
I wish the guy luck, but I am sane.

My guess would be that Wright is targeted for the Raptors NBADL team, but the Raptors have given him his release out of respect that he might gain interest from another NBA team. Remember Johnny Davis is an assistant with the Raptors so it's not likely that Chris would be disrespected. Just simply not good enough to make the roster at this time.

SDF, thanks for the insight. Any "inside " info on this or just speculation based upon what you know about the NBA, kids like CW etc. over the years?
Also, if this indeed turns out to be the case, does CW sign a league minimum contract again at around 480 K? THANKS

No specific knowledge except some education from a Mavs acquaintance that I talked to when CW was shuffling back and forth between the Warriors and the Dakota Wizards last year. Big $$$ difference between signing with GSW and being sent down to the Wizards vs. being a Wizard and then brought UP to the Warriors for a 10 day trial contract. Roberts probably gets the NBA minimum of $480+. I would think CW, DS, and CJ are all strong candidates for the NBADL. We'll see. I mean really it's a good gig to develop and mature in the NBADL at the young age of our UD candidates.

Probably some bad news for Chris Wright, at least temporarily. The Celtics have sent 2nd round draft pick small forward Kris Joseph to the Maine Red Claws. This will probably cut Chris's minutes

I think it's Kris Joseph. 51st pick in the 2nd round. Non-guaranteed contract.
Wright was only there a handful of games before he was called up by GSW, but he was a monster on the boards and had the highest rebounding average per game at just under 11/gm for the Claws.
Kris Joseph averaged 13 points, 4.7 rebounds for Syracuse. Played for a great team, but didn't set the world on fire personally.
Should be interesting how that goes.

I watched Joseph a little bit during the summer, he has a lot of talent, good handles, jumper and finished when going to the basket. He isn't going to kill you on the boards like Chris will.

From what this cousin tells me, it's not a stretch to say that the Wright/Grigsby family is about as well grounded and 'real' as it gets. Their firm belief in God taking care of them and Chris' future being in His hands is admirable.
The world needs more families like this.

A good debut for Wright - started and played 28 min, with 22 Pts and 6 reb. Hit 2 of 3 three pointers.

I missed this thread earlier when it was announced that CW is now playing for Maine. I just checked their schedule and see they'll play in Austin twice, but since those games are in February and March, I hope he'll be in Boston. If not, I've marked my calendar.

Hoping to see Chris in Santa Cruz on Feb 23, unless he is on an active NBA roster by then (I hope).
Local media site says it will be a nationally televised game between the Red Claws and the SC Warriors.
Pretty amazing that the go ahead to move the franchise from South (North?) Dakota to Santa Cruz came down in September and the whole deal was ramrodded through to the point that a vacant lot near downtown is now almost a finished arena in three months.
"Finished arena" meaning a fabric roofed corrugated steel sided "temporary" structure, seating about 2,700. UD Fieldhouse it ain't, but wow, how did they ever get that through the maze of California red tape and get it built so fast?
Just my luck CW gets traded just before the team moves to my neighborhood.

Wow. Chris had some really impressive numbers. 10-14 from the field is getting it done. Hope he keeps it up and gets a call up to the league.

Holy crap. At halftime, Wright has 13 Pts, 5 reb, 3 steals and is 2-2 from 3 pt range. I believe that makes him 5 of 6 on the year from long range. Has he officially added another dimension? Get this guy an NBA gig!

Been watching on internet. Wright is a beast tonight! Announcers are gushing calling him "human highlight reel" and telling him to stay close to the phone the NBA should be calling. Also said Wright is worth the price of admission to come see the Red Claws!

Tend to agree with you on Kris Joseph, but Wright is holding his spot in the lineup and is showing to be equal to the 2nd round draft pick. Joseph is showing to be not a good shooter, but deadly at the ft line. Wright pretty well has him beat overall. I'm wagering the two of them might have some battles in practice.

CW--the red claws---celtics
Does the fact that CW is with the red claws mean that he can only be called up by the celtics--if another NBA team wanted him in uniform---would they have to make a "trade" of a draft pick or some other compensation to bring CW to there team? Can that even be done---I'm not really familiar with how this might work for him---anyone have the insight? THX

Not positive bu I don't believe Chris is property of the celtics, like he was last year with the Warriors. I thought he signed directly with the RedClaws. That could be good and bad if it works like I thought. He can go anywhere, but teams might be more likely to bring up their assigned players.

From what I have gathered he is signed with the league(NBDL). However, it should be noted he is the no. 2 prospect in the league.

Most important thing now with Chris is that his overall game is starting to develop like it has to in order to translate to the NBA. His passing, shooting (sans dunks), and defense are not there yet, but improving quite a bit.

He may of not been the most prolific passer/dribbler when he was at UD. But, the kid could put on a heck-of-a show. That dunk in the video Fan4allUDSports posted gave me goosebumps.

CW
Not sure about last night if they played---but I thought that i read he was like 5-6 from the 3 pt. line thus far this season---hmmm! Glad to see that aspect of his game also improving to date. I hope he gets a call soon.

Could someone tell Melo that this is not "Street ball, Philadelphia" and that when you block a guy's shot it's time to go play offense not stand there are stare him down? Disgraceful.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere else but I stumbled across this pretty cool Youtube video of Chris that was made about 6 months ago. It starts with highlights from back in high school at Trotwood and goes all the way through Dayton, summer league, and then to his break out game against the Spurs last year. Hopefully Chris can get back into the league and make a name for himself.

Announcer: "....slam by NONE OTHER THAN CHRIS WRIGHT..." "the block by Chris Wright.."

The highlights are vintage CW. He is a monster in this NBADL League. Maine fans have to love him. Watch asap as I don't know how long it will be up:

The Celtics just signed a shot blocking forward from the D league instead of Chris. But, the celtics have plenty of good all around players and were looking for a sub that could spark them with defense.

Cw? Call up question ????
Any thoughts on when/if he will be called up? Is he tied to the Celtics---if someone else wants to give him a shot, do the Celtics have to be compensated? He sure is making his mark on the D League this year....

I do not think he was assigned by any team. I think there are some answers to that earlier in the thread. I think, however, that he can be claimed and signed by any team - as can Chris Johnson

As we all know, when CW finally gets another NBA chance, the new team will be looking for his contributions in single digit minutes. The auditions are sort of over. Defense, limited turnovers, rebounds, stickbacks will be his bread and butter. Hopefully he will be up to that level. With a lot of teams struggling right now with injuries and unproductive benches, I would think an opportunity won't be far away.

Between Dec. 22nd and Jan 17th Chris didn't play due to a concussion. But has back as of Jan 18 and scored 22 and 16 in the past 2 games. With 10-day contacts allowable, let's hope someone notices that a hard working, well grounded and affordable young man with NBA experience is back....besides me.

Hope he makes it. Always seemed like a good kid. I reffed at Trotwood when he was there and he seemed like a good kid then--heard good things from the staff there. Also, even as X fan, never saw anything on the court to make me think otherwise. Making it is good for him, good for UD, and good for the A-10. Good luck, Chris.

I won't be shocked if the Celtics call up chris. Doc Rivers just went on a rant about how his team doesn't want to play hard, they want to win the easy way. He said if things don't improve he will be getting rid of some of the current players. Chris would make a great example on how to play hard. I know there are two of us on the board who would like to see him wearing a green uniform

I'm with ya, Brian but the Cs just made their annual pilgramage to Motown (and got blown out, hence the Doc Rivers rant) so from a personal standpoint, the timing is not the greatest for a callup.
BRob will be here February 11th.

That is true but I think the problems of the Celtics run deep right now. I have wondered most of the season why guys seemed to be only playing one good game a week. I am starting to think that it is a season long lack of effort.
