Thanks a lot. Now I have to start liking the guy.
Seriously. One of those guys/teams I hate when we play them and root for them big time in non-conference and tourney games.

Phil has a place in Avalon down at the Jersey Shore next to Stone Harbor where my family has gone for 30+ years. I've never seen him there but a few fellow Flyer fans have.

St. Joe's has long been my (distant) second favorite team in the A 10. Great tradition, scrappy small Catholic school, and Martelli always speaks highly of Dayton and Flyer fans. He gets it. He's a Total Philly guy and the perfect head coach for St. Joe's. I even like Joe Lunardi...I've seen him out and about town several years ago and he's just a nice, regular guy.

I always liked his comment about players returning and being older and wiser, etc. - he said, "older is not better, better is better."
He seems to be an honorable coach who cuts no slack and takes no guff, but retains respect.

Martello has always been classy. And, if I recall correctly, he can be quite the character. From what I remember, he once started his weekly TV in a coffin and "rose up from the dead"

"I have so much respect for everything Dayton stands for" - Phil Martelli at the 1st time out on last night's broadcast. I just wish we beat them more

I had the pleasure a few years ago of meeting Pat Knapp, Phil's teammate and friend from Widener. Knapp was the long-time women's basketball coach at Georgetown and other places. Was a good friend of Jim Jabir. He shared some wonderful stories about Phil.
