Dayton @ Old Dominion Game Thread
"Frank Hassell is the leading returning scorer, rebounder and shot blocker on this team. The 6-foot-8 strong big man averaged 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game last season while shooting 54 percent from the field. With Lee gone, Hassell will be the focal point of the ODU offense down low." The Hoops Report

Old Dominion Monarchs
Last Season: 27-9 (15-3)
Key Losses: Gerald Lee, Marsharee Neely
Head Coach: Blaine Taylor
Projected Starting Lineup
PG: Darius James 6-1 Sr.
SG: Kent Bazemore 6-5 Jr.
SF: Ben Finney 6-5 Sr.
PF: Keyon Carter 6-8 Sr.
C: Frank Hassell 6-8 Sr.
Key Reserves: Trian Iliadis 6-3 Jr. SG, Chris Cooper 6-9 Jr. PF, Marquel De Lancey 6-0 Jr. PG, Dimitri Batten 6-3 Fr. SG
Old Dominion is coming off a terrific season in which the Monarchs won the CAA tournament title to reach the NCAA tournament and knocked off Notre Dame in the first round in a dramatic one-point game before fighting until the end but ultimately falling short against Baylor in the second round. Despite losing star big man Gerald Lee, the Monarchs still have an excellent, experienced team returning that can certainly win the CAA once again and get back to the NCAA tournament.
Frank Hassell is the leading returning scorer, rebounder and shot blocker on this team. The 6-foot-8 strong big man averaged 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per.....................

http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/34-ol...preview-168806
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/sites..._logos/odu.GIFOverall Rank: #34
Conference Rank: #1 Colonial Athletic Association
2009-10: 27-9, 15-3
2009-10 postseason: NCAA
Coach: Blaine Taylor (188-103 at Old Dominion, 330-168 overall)
For six straight years Coach Blaine Taylor has led Old Dominion to the postseason. That streak is not going to end this year. Three of those postseason appearances have been to the NCAA Tournament, but it was last year when ODU knocked off Notre Dame that the Monarchs finally got some much deserved respect. The loss of Gerald Lee is a big blow, but with four starters returning, this team will battle it out for another NCAA berth.
Final Projection:
It is easy to write off Old Dominion since Lee got drafted in the second round, but there was, and is, a lot more to this team than just Lee. VCU, George Mason and James Madison are not going to make it easy, but the Monarchs should have the most talented team in the CAA from day one. The biggest issue is whether or not the depth in the paint can keep up with the starters. If they do, this team may not have to win the conference tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament.
Projected Post-season Tournament: NCAA
Projected Starting Five:
Darius James, Senior, Guard, 7.0 ppg
Kent Bazemore, Junior, Guard, 8.4 ppg
Ben Finney, Senior, Forward, 8.8 ppg
Keyon Carter, Senior, Forward, 7.4 ppg
Frank Hassell, Senior, Forward, 9.2 ppg

This is a game that could get ugly if we continue to play the way we did in our last home game. Staten's return gives me a lot more confidence that we have a punchers chance of pulling out a road win.
I remember watching ODU play Xavier earlier in the season and thinking that ODU looked like the team with more quality that day. X made a few runs, but the quality of ODU just kept showing through. ODU is not exceptionally big, but their bigs have good quality. Finney vs. Chris Johnson should be an interesting match-up at SF. I hope our defense decides to show up for this game. Without it, I can see us getting hammered.

For every 10 posts that gripe about the Flyers there should be at least 1 that gives the score and time left.

This is amazing. ODU's local TV broadcasts are in HD. Channel 7 should be embarrassed that they can't do their broadcasts in HD.

Is it possible to want Hartsock and Dukes? The game is behind the radio so I can't pause the game to sync with the radio!! I may have to listen to music. These guys are terrible.

Luke is not providing any lift at all. Missed all of his treys and his defense has enabled OD some five points.
I don't think his skill set is a good match up against this team.

Is it like that on the actual television channel? If you're watching on the internet, it's because your video is from the video screens at the arena, while audio is their radio feed.
If they're showing these same things on actual television, that would be a first.

Arrgh! I can't stand this feed! They replay every ODU basket in real time! How could their fans stand never seeing the team on the D end - I can't see half of Dayton's possessions? Anyone have a different feed?

First, I like the Flyers effort. They are scrapping and playing hard. Second, Id let Luke keep shooting as long as the game is close. Some guys need multiple shots to get their feel and get used to the background behind the basket.

Next year we need to consider recruiting at least one Eastern European kid who can shoot the eyes out of the basket.

It's all about the defense, that's it. Play great defense and we've got a great chance.

CJ has a hand on the ball on the rebound, gets roped around by ODU's guy, and its a foul on CJ. Go figure.

I wish they would stop referring to Wright as an "All-American candidate". I don't care what the list state, there is no way he's a legit candidate. He has digressed.

JS with a runner. CW has been awesome on D. He must have 3-4 steals and 5 more deflections. 32-30 UD with a minute left.

Juwan scored his 6th point with a "looper". A looper, you ask? Yeah, a looper. A jock. A caddy.
