Jimmy Binnie D league
Was looking up flyers in the nba / d league over time and saw that Jimmy played for the Dakota Wizards. Does that mean he essentially had a contract via the Washington Wizards? Do they make a decent signing bonus like in baseball/minors?
Wish the d league was around when guys like Negele Knight, Wes Coffee, and Dave Colbert were around. Could if played in those leagues and made some good $
Jimmy was a solid player. Tough as nails. Hope we recruit some guys like that again. Binnie& Cripee were all heart

Negele Knight played in the NBA for 6-7 years. Binnie was not a very good player.

Didn’t he play 30 mpg on some pretty decent UD teams.
4 star top 150 player. Wasn’t NBA level but a good player

Negele would not have needed the D League. He got drafted early in the 2nd round and made the team and had a nice little NBA career followed by an international career.

Always liked Binnie. Guy worked very hard. Place used to go nuts when he'd bang a 3 ball. His effort on D night in and night out was appreciated on those teams.

I always thought BG did Jimmie a disservice in terms of player development. His shooting actually seemed to get much worse in his 4 years here. I’ll agree that his defense, rebounding, and toughness all improved from Day 1 to Day Last, but what made him a solid recruit in the first place was his shooting, and we never did see him become a deep-ball threat for us.
Two last comments:
1) We already have a guy like Jimmie Binnie in the fold. His name is Ryan Mikesell.
2) Jimmie will always be one of my favorite Flyers from a “dedication to the program” standpoint because of how he handled the Meacham transfer news (“If he doesn’t want to be here, then we don’t want him”, or words to that effect).

I told this story five years ago, but here goes again.
I was in training in Denver, staying at the Double Tree Suites in Stapleton. I get on the elevator and there's this rather tall dude already on. We're riding down and I see the A-10 logo on his shorts and I think "well, that's not something you see every day." Then I see the Dayton Flyers' logo on his shirt and I look at him and exclaim "You're Jimmie Binnie!" He was shocked someone recognized him and we made introductions. He said he was working up in North Dakota and that life was going well for him. He asked how everyone liked Archie (this was during the five game league slump in early 2014) and I told him the jury was out at that point. He was a genuinely nice guy who still wore his Flyer pride both literally and figuratively.

I always joke that Jimmy Binnie had photos of BG with a woman other than his wife. No other logical explanation for him playing 25+ minutes a game! He was a good "program guy" though. Tried his best and did the right things.

First game Jimmie’s senior year his dad could not come,so he gave me his ticket. Connected on UDPride, which his dad always read. He said he was very upset with some of the comments about Jimmie, but knew I was not one of those. Anyway, I end up having to sit next to Jimmie’s girlfriend and mother. Tough assignment.

Not saying Jimmie’s oncourt performance was anywhere near as good as Ryan’s is now. Just drawing a comparison in terms of their toughness, size, leadership qualities, and dedication to the program.

I don't think anyone could ever question Jimmie's attitude and dedication.
He was also forced to play out of position at times due to injuries. Saw him hustle and never complain. I also think that Jimmie lost confidence in his 3 point shot and I think that might have been due to the way he was coached. He and Mickey Perry both shot the 3 ball much better after they graduated as I recall.

I liked Jimmie as a player and as a representative of UD. I was glad he stayed despite it being hard that his friend left. To say he was tough or a leader though is quite a stretch. By his senior year he had lost so much of his confidence he wanted no part of the action when the game was on the line. He wasn’t alone though as I can still hear Bucky repeatedly pointing out that BRob had no one to pass to as no one wanted the ball in those situations.
And yes to compare RM to JB is huge disservice to Ryan. Ryan is tough and a leader.

My recollection of Binnie was that BG didn't utilize his talents in the offense. He seemed to lose confidence or interest as BG just didn't seem to call his number.
After graduation remember him continuing his basketball career where he was scoring the kind of points he did before coming to UD. Right there I knew Binnie still had it an wondered what it was between him an BG that he didn't seem part of BGs system.
Glad he came to the Colorado game. Once a flyer always a flyer.

I agree, Mikesell is a better player. But they both brought a lot of the same skill sets and contributions. Binnie actually shot a very respectable 3P%.

As I recall, JB became a bit of a shooting head case later in his career.
They would run a play to get him a shot in the first couple of possessions. If it went in, he was fine and would put up some points. If it didn't go, he was heading to the bench at the under 16min TO.

I seem to remember some of that, although I'm not sure I would characterize it as head case. Certainly more streaky than anything.
Comprehensively, his 3P shooting was solid. Made 40 as a senior and shot over 35%. Very similar to Mikesell's numbers this year, with Binnie's % slightly higher.
Binnie had a bunch of games where he made 2 or 3 threes, and one game where he made 4, sprinkled in with a few 1-6's and 1-5's and an 0-6.
Binnie averaged 4 rebounds that year and 1.4 assists. Both very similar to Mikesell.
And I do recall Binnie often drawing the defensive assignment of the other team's best player, sans a 6'10" center.
IIRC, this was the year Chris Wright got hurt, we started off really hot beating Pitt and Louisville and then shat to bed in a bunch of A10 road games. We were probably a couple wins away from making the tournament that year.

I'm with you. We can compliment Mikesell without taking shots at Binnie. He was a respectable player and great rep for UD. Sometimes we (myself included) aren't the kindest with criticisms and words on here.
Cheers to being better and kinder to our beloved Flyers and UD Alum.

I always thought that Jimmie Binnie was a good shooter until he tore his bicep muscle. Then afterward, I thought there was a physical condition that made him erratic in his shooting or it may have been psychological after the injury. I kept waiting for him to play his way through it. But it did not seem to happen for him.
