anyhoo, Thursday 12/3:
Southern Cal @ Santa Barbara
yeah, I know UD didn't play USC, but several of our opponents did, Monmouth twice, and there are no games this evening involving an A10 foe or a previously played, or about to be played opponent.
#1 Kentucky @ UCLA, because, as I mentioned above, its a slow night hoops wise, this is the only game of any interest nationally; seems like a good night to get our Christmas Cards addressed.

The IU job is NOT what it used to be.... Even there facilities are quite a bit below Big Ten standards. But "somehow" their mediocre team still gets ranked......

Fordham's loss of Paschall was not a big deal, but the loss of a poor coach was significant. Beating both Manhattan and SJU would not have occurred if the former regime was in place. We have had a number of close calls with the Rams in past years. This year they cannot be taken for granted.

They would've won a lot of games if they had a coach that could get them to play defense.

You are correct regarding Crean's buyout. It drops from $12M to $7.5M if he is fired after June 2016.

What is up with George Mason? They beat Ole Miss and Okie St but lose to Colgate, Mercer, Manhattan and Towson. Jekyll & Hyde.

Unfortunately Archie would probably take the IU job. In terms of support and basketball being #1, it is like UD, and way better than OSU. That is a crazy nuts basketball state and they love IU.

I don't want to look at it that way. Cause that would mean that X is greater than us an should be #1 in the country. I hope I never see that day. I wouldn't be able to go to work.

USC won at Santa Barbara, which helps Monmouth, which in turn helps us and as mentioned, UCLA won (which also helps Monmouth, which in turn helps us)..otherwise, it was a dull night.
Friday is typically a dull night in NCAA basketball, but not this Friday 12/4:
Arkansas (+5.5) @ Wake Forest
Saint Joes (+3) @ Columbia
Pitt (-8.5) @ Duquesne (eat ....stuff Pitt!)
Bama (-14.5) @ Southern Miss

Khari Price just threw in a 71-footer to close the 1st half, giving Southern Miss (0-5) a 30-29 lead over Bama. He lead them with 10 points, with all of his FG attempts from 3 (3-6). It's on FS1.

Duquesne beat down pretty good by Pittsburgh. But, I saw nothing that indicates UD will not continue to struggle at Duquesne on first weekend of new year to open up the A10 slate. The Dukes still looking capable.

Southern Miss just committed their THIRD TEAM FOUL of the half...with under 4 minutes to play. Must be nice to play more than one possession without a foul called.
In other news, Monmouth loses to Canisius by 10. Good grief.

Canisius picked to finish 6th in the MAAC. At least it was a road loss for Monmouth, but hope they don't resemble the BG-era Flyers. Non-con heroes, .500 in conference.

The Monmouth loss shows how difficult it is to win on the road in college basketball. Monmouth only a 63% chance to win at Canisius and favored only by 4.
It is about equally likely to win versus #1 at home as it is to win #50 neutral as it is to win at 100 on the road.
So yes, UD has about an equal shot to win versus Kentucky at UD Arena as it does to beat Texas at a neutral location as it does to beat Yale at Yale. This is a little too simplistic and a little easier to beat Yale at Yale versus Kentucky at UD Arena, but not that much easier.
The NCAA Committee way overvalues top 50 home wins -- it will overvalue UCLAs home win versus Kentucky and overvalued Texas 3-12 top 50 record last year -- 2/3 of their wins were at home and the other neutral.

I think overall UD does a good job scheduling but SEMO has been a poor RPI team for a while - need to avoid scheduling likely 200+ RPI teams!

As of today UD Pride RPI has the Flyers #11 with a SOS of 28. the OOC has worked out pretty well so far. As has been the case most years the OOC has been fine and in conference has been less than ideal. AM is changing the in conference performance and continued strong performance in the OOC should pay off in March. Last year the Flyers got the short end of the stick, but I believe that was a flat out miss by the committee. OOC could be improved by fewer poor buy games and maybe a home and home with a MVC, Pac 12 or BIG team. We seem to have a good relationship with the SEC. The more we win the easier it will be to schedule these games. However if nothing changes we are still in good shape. As was stated though, it should be possible to improve the buy games, SEMSU, Furman, and Miami are not much help.

Sorry to see that. SLU got off to a good start this year, but this was their 3rd L in a row. Granted, WichSt with Van Vleet is a much better team than what showed up in Orlando, but still, that would have wound-up being a nice RPI boost for SLU and the A-10 by March.

Last year SEMO went 13-17, with an overtime loss to Murray State, a one point loss at Belmont, and a five point loss to Morehead State in the OVC first round,
Unfortunately, I don't see them getting 13 wins this season.

On ESPNU NC is pounding Davidson with 7 to go in the first half, 33-18 NC is not a huge team, but Davidson is so small they barely can get shots off. NC not falling for all the picks.

Turned it off as well, but watched when the Baylor/Vandy game came on later and Vandy will be out to prove something at home against the Flyers on Wednesday after dropping a close one in Waco against Baylor.

This one barely matters but I was at the game so I'll post the score:
USC over Idahon74-55.
USC has some nice players, but they don't play team ball very well. I don't know very much about their coaching staff, but if they have good coaching, I think they will do well in the PAC12.

Iowa beats Western Il by 34. ESPN mouthpiece, on Sportscenter in reviewing the game, said, "Iowa is a good team with only two losses to good teams, Dayton and ND."

Doesn't Andy Enfield coach USC? He had that nice run with FGCU a few years ago.

Yes, Enfield is still at USC, hasn't really done much in his 2+ years out in LA.

Tuesday 12/8:
UMass (+2.5) @ Central Florida
Houston (+7.5) @ Rhody
Penn St (+11) @ GW
N. Iowa (-4.5) @ Mason
UMBC @ Duquesne
LIU-Brooklyn @ Fordham
Wright St (+21) @ Xavier
Princeton (+3.5) @ Saint Joes
Vermont @ Bonnies
Liberty @ Furman
Tennessee Wesleyan @ Chattanooga
Bowling Green @ SE Missouri St
Evansville (+2) @ Arkansas
Could (hopefully) shape up to be a good night, A10 has a reasonable shot at sweeping or having only 1 loss (UNI @ Mason looks like the most likely loss), while other than SE Missouri St, looks like the OOC foes should all win.

No real implications for UD, but the WV vs UVA game tonight will be very interesting. 2 really good teams with opposite styles.

He has them playing well this year however. USC was pocked by many to finish in the bottom third of their conference. Looking more like a top third, on-the-bubble type team thus far.

I'll tell you, GW's for real if you already didn't know it. I went down to see the Penn State game tonight. The Nittany Lions were out-hustled, out-coached and sure didn't look like a Big Ten team. I'm guessing around 3,500 in the building. Was on the local channel. But even though I think it's finals week . . . student section didn't look to hold more than 400 kids. A shame. They are a terrific club.

^^^ pretty much my thoughts exactly.
Our OOC opponents and the A10 avoided any upsets, picked up all the wins it "should have" but didn't pick up any surprises either. Of course, only UMass had a real shot of picking up a win they "shouldn't have" and given the history of the "A10 suck factor" you've got to be pleased with last night's performance.

Wednesday 12/9:
E. Washington vs Davidson (Gotham Classic)
for a Wednesday night, its a pretty slow night, hoops wise, I imagine many schools are in Exam week, which perhaps explains it????
BC is scheduled to play at Providence, haven't heard if that one will go off or not. If you are not aware, BC was hit by the Chipotle bug (allegedly), like 8, maybe 10 guys IIRC.

To date, A-10 has had a much better OOC then 2014-2015, but not as good as 2013-2014.
Top 100 A-10 has 11 wins and 22 losses, but if you take out UD's 4-1, it is 7-21.
Top 50 A-10 has 4 wins and 15 losses, but if you take out UD's 2-1, it is 2-14.
Top 25 A-10 has 1 win and 9 losses, but if you take out UD's 1-1, it is 0-8.
Good news for RPI is teams like Fordham have feasted on bad opponents. But really only UD and GW with quality wins (Dayton with 2 top 50 and GW with 2 top 50). VCU, Davidson, and Richmond have zero top 50 wins right now which are needed to get into the NCAA.

Anyone knows why is Davidson ranked in the Top10 in the RPI?
Good for them and the A10, but puzzling.

If you take a look at the UDPride RPI you can see why. Under the RPI Level 2 column you see they are ranked tenth of everybody. Level 2 reflects your opponents results, it is also your strength of schedule (SOS), and also accounts for 50% of a team's RPI. In a nutshell they have played the 10th toughest schedule and only lost once. Of course, they have only played 5 D-1 games - the other game being D-III Denison which does not count for RPI purposes. They play a fairly weak 3-3 Eastern Washington team at home tonight (RPI 270) - and will most assuredly drop win or lose.

Illinois 69 v. Yale 65
- Illinois comes from behind late to beat Yale. Illinois is not very good.
SIU Edwardsville 76 @ So. Illinois 74
- The real SIU was 8-1 coming into this, and SIU-E was 1-7. This might be the upset of the night.
Davidson 96 v. EWU 86
Wichita St. 56 v. UNLV 50
- Shockers back on track with Van Vleet returning.
Milwaukee 68 @ Wisconsin 67
- Bo Ryan suffering through one last season, UW with 4 losses already.

Elsewhere in the Big10, Minnesota is 0-2 against the state of South Dakota (and - with a narrow win over Omaha - 1-2 vs the Summit League):

Iowa lost that game themselves, but iowa state is definitely a great team and deserves their #4 spot. Would have been an awesome rpi boost if iowa got the scalp

The RPI really doesn't work that way. The only impact on the RPI is Iowa having one more win and one less loss.
If the W or L means Iowa is or isn't in the top 25 or top 50 of the RPI it impacts the resume on selection Sunday.

It would have helped the sos.

As noted, Iowa blew a game they had in hand. At one point Utoff had 20 points, Iowa St had 30 points as a team. They choked away the final few minutes.
Friday 12/11:
nothing, only a few games, non all that interesting.

Saturday 12/12:
Duquesne @ St Francis
Ole Miss @ SE Missouri St (??? did Ole miss really take this as a road game, or is this an exempt tourny that I'm not thinking of?)
Mason @ James Madison
Rutgers @ GW
#23 Cincy @ #12 Xavier
Longwood @ Richmond
W Carolina @ Davidson
Tenn Tech @ Arkansas
Alabama A&M @ St Louis
#25 Utah @ Wichita St (is WSU healthy again? Van Fleet is back. A Utah Loss, combined with a UD victory on Saturday could help them into the top 25)

UMass @ Florida Gulf Coast

LaSalle @ Nova
Bama @ Clemson

Good question - doesn't look like an exempt game. There doesn't seem to be any local ties to the Ole Miss roster . . . maybe Ole Miss is looking for an easy road win, though a win over SEMO anywhere is hardly a resume builder.

If Miami scheduled around when fans would show up, they would never play a home game.
Except maybe against us, because we show up.

Red Hawks suck at everything except hockey. Playing them in roundball is a waste of time and rpi.

Because Iowa record would be better. As one of 30 plus opponents it doesn't matter that much. By the end of the year the ROI effect of a 21-10 Iowa vs a 20-11 Iowa is minimal. It most matters if that loss keeps Iowa out of RPI top 25 or 50.

Though not a direct impact on RPI the lose may get into their heads as opposed to being a confidence builder. If UD loses their opener to IPFW a couple of years ago I wonder if we even make the NCAA tournament let alone an Elite Eight run

YEP, an old rivalry. Time to move past it.

Bama gets a late bucket to win at Clemson - 51-50. Tide has now won 4 in a row- including Wichita State, Notre Dame, and Clemson. Only losses to us and _avier.
They are still very much offensively challenged. However, after seeing them at the arena, would not have expected their success to date.
Our opponents are doing really really well.

I actually watched the last 45 seconds or so of the Bama-Clemson game. Clemson was up 1, with the ball, and with about 30 sec to go and 9 on the shot clock called timeout. Bama stole the inbounds pass and went in for a dunk at the other end, Clemson missed, ball got batted around, and actually was tipped into the shot clock by a Clemson player - Bama ball. They got fouled with 1 sec to go and missed the front end but a full court heave by Clemson was no good. But Bama has bounced back very nicely. I'm already excited to play at their place next year.
UTC was #17 in the RPI before today and I think Bama was #40.

St. Joe's beats Temple in OT by 1 at SJU...SJU's rpi is in the 70's, Temple in the 150's...Fran Dunphy may be on the hot seat: he has not made the NCAA tournament the last two years in a row.
Rhode Island falls by 3 at Nebraska, 70-67.
UMass falls by 1 at Florida Gulf Coast, 77-76.

Monmouth getting respect from the announcers and looking good against the Hoyas. Got to admit that I am becoming a Monmouth fan.

North Florida did beat Florida International yesterday, hitting on 16 3's in their 94-72 victory to improve to 8-4.

Chattanooga wins by 11 at home against Tennessee State
RedHawks win by 11 at home over Jackson State
Monmouth wins by 15 at Georgetown
Monmouth now has wins at UCLA, over Notre Dame in Orlando, over USC in Orlando, and a win at Georgetown - plus a very close loss to us in Orlando. Maybe folks will finally take this team seriously.

They keep this up, and they may not have much to worry about on Selection Sunday.

I think all UD Priders take Monmouth seriously - it's those theatre clowns on the bench we don't ...
