Green Bay Thread
Twitter says there will be a delayed start. Previous match went 5 sets with the 5th going long.

Not sure about delayed start of game but there is a definite delayed start by flyers offense. Don't look like they came ready to play.

UD playing from behind 1-3 points, but just took the lead 14-13. Timeout GB. 2 blocks in a row to take the lead.

UD wins 25-19
Yvonne serves an ace to close it out.
Ally was serving that point run above which put some distance between us and GB.
We had 6 blocks.

GB up 10-4. Timeout UD.
There has been some confusion at the net -- who is being set and where. Also some lucky drops for GB -- and we aren't covering the dink kills.

Last thing ya want to do is give GB confidence. The played their best after intermission and are tied with UD 1-1.
Sheff cannot be too happy.

GB takes Set 2 25-15. We looked sloppy and like I said above -- confusion at the net as to who is being set where.
Serve Receive and passing weak. When the pass is Good or even ok -- we seem to score at a high percentage. Sam sets the open hitter and our hitters deliver. When pass is bad we struggle. That's typical of a lot of teams -- but the good teams find a way to score out-of-system a repectable amount of time.
Looking for us to bounce back strong and clean up execution. We did that against ND yesterday.
The announcer said Rachel Jones came in with us down 7-12, but I didn't see her rotation. She did serve last set. Bless her heart... right in to the net. It's tough being a freshman.

As noted by BeckysTXA there was confusion at the net and never corrected. Continued to have players run into one another and not sure who was covering the ball.

Have to admit, I keep expecting a faster offense and I don't see it. The sets from Selsky are high and slow giving opposing blockers a chance to get in place. Middles also have not been set too much in the middle (probably due to the poor passing) and this just adds to the predictability of the offense.
Kray and Yvonne being able to attack out of the back row is really helping to keep this team successful. That back row set can used even when you are not passing well. It adds another dimension to offense, but I think the opposing teams are starting to identify that as a main weapon when we are out of sync.

Kelly said the offense would be a little faster this year. If the passing isn't good it is tough to set the ball low to the outside, it almost has to be a high set. But, even with great passing I don't think you want to run a super fast offense like Xavier runs with our personnel. When you have two taller hitters on the outside it is easier to set the ball a little higher.
I would bet that they haven't spent a lot of time on out of system setting in practice so far.

Megan's Campbell's slide is alreadys starting to look more comfortable. While she has been scoring points on it all weekend. Seems like she has better vision this game. She has really been able to find the hole in the defense. Always better when the ball finds the hole right off the swing as opposed to a poor dig by the opponent.

Flyers win 3rd set but still playing sloppy. Forcing some GB errors but overall not very good play by the flyers.

I had to step out in set 2 -- did Yvonne pull something on that last play? She was reaching and diving for the ball -- Sheff called a timeout.

Dayton being pushed hard by GB forcing errors. UD has a lot of work to do if they want to keep that 19 rating.
Right now they do not look like the 19th best team in the country.

This looks like the most confused and out of sync UD team I've seen in years. Not sure everyone knows what they are supposed to do.

I had to step out in set 4 also -- but came back to see Ally make one heck of a dig and pass for Sam to set Kray in the backrow for a kill to even the match 23-23. Big play. We then get a block to go up 24-23 and then Megan serves a ball they can't get over and UD pulls it out 25-23.
This match was not pretty --- lots to work on, but that's what pre-conference is all about -- learning what your team needs to work on. Next two weekends will be very, very tough.

Camera man spotted Chelsy Christoff and Rachel Bro. They joined the team post game for the celebration. Great to see the alumni of this fantastic program supporting the current team.
Great finish to the game. Like to see that Dayton come from behind mentality. Had to fight for that one. The entire team played good volleyball in the last few minutes and keep those rally points on the right side of the scoreboard. Good clutch serving from Kray, Megan, and Rachel. The passing was good and gave Sam options. She was able to set Shayne and Z in the middle (although neither had great attack). Kray pushed very hard for the victory. Her swings were even more dangerous and powerful in the final minutes. I think we were able to see what a little of what this team was capable of in the last portion of this tournament. There are some clear holes but there is a lot to build from. let's hope Yvonne is alright. Shes a big part of this team. I would prefer to see her leadership displayed on the court.

I didn't use the quote in my article but kelly said they are definitely not the #19 team in the country right now but they could be better than that when the season ends. Kelly said that they would need to improve week to week to become a great team
I'm concerned about yvonne's shoulder. Should injuries are not good for volleyball hitters. Hopefully she just stretched something

These growing pains should not be a surprise. Different team, different makeup compared to the last few years. I think fans are going to see UD win a lot of those matches they won last year 3-0 turn into 3-1/3-2 wins this year. And perhaps a few losses in there along the way. Its not going to be that overwhelming talent or experience difference where UD just shows up and can win in three straight 12/17/15.
As I said, we lost the All-A10 First Team to graduation.

Chris I agree completely. The next two weeks are a huge challenge for a very young team. If we continue to improve we will be tough when the conference season begins.
Yvonne is in the picture at the end of the match so she at least finished the match. Kelly said that megan would be worth the price of admission and she has proven him correct so far.

Agree with everyone's assessment but considering GB had played its second 5 set match just hours before the UD match and UD had 6 hours rest I was expecting more than what they brought.
Actually GB looked like they spent their entire tourney preparation for the flyers where they played their best of the tourney.

That GB team had 14 out of 15 players returning. With that much team chemistry they probably were able to spend more time preparing for the Flyers.
Upset Alert: Megan Campbell wins the tournament MVP award. After Kraybacher's huge performance Friday, she looked like a huge front runner. Kray even lead the GB match in kills with 18 and was able to have double-doubles in each match. MC did play well though. Both were the main contributors down the stretch in the GB match. Kray and Yvonne both made the all-tournament team.

In the end, Megan put up the best numbers over three matches. Hit 400%, 3.73 kills/set and 1.45 blocks/set. She lead in blocking every match we played.
Yvonne -- she was reaching/diving left when she got hurt. The little bit of post-game video and even the picture -- looks like it's the left shoulder -- which would be very good news being the non-hitting shoulder. I would think you could be semi-recovered and still play if it was your non-swinging shoulder????? Hopefully just a slight pull and she's back soon.
Good to see a couple more freshmen in the mix this last match. Brigid Cambell contributed with a couple kills and Rachel Jones got into 3 of the 4 sets. Last year not only did we have the A-10 First Team on the floor, but we had experienced veterans in the wings. People with lots of starting experience. Not so this year. Anytime these younger kids can make an appearance, it will help us down the road.
Finally, big week coming up. The first thing we know is this coaching staff and these players will get after it big time. It will be an all-out effort to breakdown tape and drill down on certain areas that need improvement. They won't be able to fix/perfect everything, but it will be important to improve in a couple areas this week and every week and do so at a pretty high level because the competition will be a lot tougher this coming weekend. And I would have to think that task starts with passing. When we pass well, we have the setter who can deliver a ball and the hitters that can put it away. While watching the matches, I started writing down "good, ok, or bad" for our passing and then what happened after that. I classified good as a pass to the setter between the 10' line and the net. Ok was at the 10' line and bad outside the line. Not a pure system - maybe not even a very good system, but easy for a fan to do. Then I wrote down what happened with our touches off that pass and what happened with the opponents next 3 touches. If the rally continues past the next 5 touches - nothing was written down -- and in fact we would have had another first pass and the process begins anew.
When our pass was good -- we scored a lot -- meaning more than 70% of the time. When it was a poor first pass, either we gave up points with errors off our next 2 touches or our attach was weak/free balled and the opponent came right back with a strong attach and scored. That happened a lot. I had never broken the game down from this perspective and it really underscored the importance of that first pass.

Good News! I should add that it was great for Brigid to come in and get two kills after Yvonne was injured.

Okay, now that I vented on our non ability to put away a tired GB team and that we didn't look like a 19 team, I took a step back and realized that the rotation that made that comeback in game 4 didn't have one senior in it. Thats scary good.
The announcers repeatedly said that those evualuating the flyers all said they were the hardest hitting team they had seen. Especially Kray and Yvonne. Now enter Megan Campbell into that mix.
Not sure I heard this correct but they added that Dayton was one of the youngest and shortest teams in the tourney. Dayton had only 7 players over 6' and GB had 9. And as noted GB had 14 returning players.
Kray lost out on the MVP with her 11 errors. But she corrected that when Yvonne went down.
