Big match tonight as the rivalry continues. 30 match A-10 win streak for Dayton and 1st place in the A-10 on the line. Dayton coming off a couple easy victories, but x coming off a surprising loss to GW. The Musketeers have a couple big OOC wins against T A&M and LSU but have had their struggles as well dropping matches to Maryland, Toledo, and like I just mentioned GW. Xavier needs a win to steal first place away from the Flyers before the A-10 championship is in Frericks. Dayton hasn't knocked off any marquee opponents but hasn't lost to any inferior teams. UD is still receiving votes and if Figgie is right, an RPI of 41. The Flyers need that streak to continue to maintain any hope of an at large bid and to remain a top the A-10. Has UD's young team come far enough to get a tough win when they need to?

All eyes should be on the number 7's of each team: Stephanie Vorherr and Yvonne Marten. Stephanie V. is the best Libero and best defensive player in the A-10. The Flyers need to keep the ball away from her on the serve, she leads the league in serve receive at .988 pct. A key for the Flyers will be getting the fast Musketeers out of system. Their best hope will be to find ANY one other than Vorherr on the serve. Xavier has only 3 main players taking serves and the worst is Sam Brown at .938. If she is in the back row she is our target.

For the Flyers, Yvonne Marten because she had a huge match last year against the Musketeers. Yvonne went 11 for 22 and hit .409 for the Flyers when x did a good job of bottling up Rach Kray. (4-kills, 4-errors, 28 attacks .000 hitting) and Amanda Cowdrey. Becky also had a good game hitting .333 so look for Megan Cambpell and the Hammer-slide to get a lot of attacks. Note Jess Yanz succeeded on 6 of 6 attacks. Sam Selsky probably has the go ahead to "turn and burn" if she has the chance. May be another good way to surprise the quick offense of X and get them out of system, if they can even keep those attack off the court.

This is great recap of last year's A-10 final and what worked and who this year can take advantage of opportunities. The only two things I would add are Von was playing right side last year -- and Shayne Brown has that role this year. The opportunity might actually end up being Shayne's rather than Von's. They seemed to focus on shutting down the left side attackers last year.

Also, we had a ton of blocks in the championship match last year. Need to come up big with net defense again this time around.

Almost match-time. GO FLYERS!!!

Vorherr steps behind the service line and goes on a huge run. x up 14-10.

Great student turnout by the way. "White" scare is filling up both end lines.

Timeout UD behind 14-10. We look a little flat and X looks pretty sharp right now. We are not dictating the flow of the game.

I think we have 1 block, but we have gotten our hands on balls -- just they have gone out or dropped on our side. We have to keep the pressure on at the net.

Great comeback by the Flyers, but the set isn't over. Need to use this great momentum and the excitement from the Red Scare.

I really like the moment where that high ball went from UD's side of the court to xavier and it just kinda caught x off guard. More luck than skill, but a great opportunity to have x be dissapointed that something like that happened.

Really wanted to see the Flyers comeback from a big deficit against a tough opponent, but they missed another opportunity to do that. x takes set 1 25-20.

No correction -- just an observation. Your post was great.

X takes set 1 25-20. They hit .341 with 2 errors. UD hits .244 with 5 errors. That's the difference. Gotta keep the block pressure on -- only had 1 block but got our hands on a lot of balls. That can swing to our favor if we can get the block up just a second faster.

Also notice I didn't see us serve to Vorherr at all. Probably a couple went her way, I just don't recall seeing any. I'm sure this is by design.

Very good turn out by Red Scare. I'd say this is the best I've seen since Hansmoleman was the Red Scare Volleyball VP two years ago.

Really like the guys that have body painted the vball jerseys with the color block long sleeves. Very impressive. I've seen #'s 17, 12, 20, 10, 36. 15, 7 so far.

Much better set. UD ties it up winning set 2 25-18. We seemed to dictate more than the first set when we seemed to be waiting to see what X was going to do.

Biggest surprise stat -- we are out-digging X 41-32. But we have too many errors -- total of 18 in 2 sets is giving them too many points. Let's clean that up in the 3rd.

UD takes set 3 25-14. Shayne Brown hit a winner down the line from the rightside to go up 22-13. The ball ended up at X coach Mike Johnson's feet. He kicked the ball down the UD bench line. He thought he could beat Dayton last year after getting beat 3-2 the first match last year. After that match, the next two were not even close. Tonight his team wins set 1, but UD had dominated since. I'm sure he is frustrated.

GO FLYERS!

Oh boy, do we miss Mandy Robbe tonight...the 2 guys are perhaps enthusiastic, but have they ever played or do they understand the game? It's a bit amateurish.

UD wins 4th set 25-16. X hit .341 in the first set. They finish the night @ .140. Obviously things went downhill fast after that first set.

I agree. They are trying to be pros, and they aren't 'bad" but it's a very "student-level" broadcast. I hope this is a class and they learn from the experience.

We have become very spoiled with broadcasters who actually KNOW the game these past couple years. These guys didn't know the game that well, missed a ton of calls, couldn't pronounce Kray and Z's last names and neither of them did play-by-play. The last two sets they didn't have anything to say, but kept talking.

Coach was upset at the net judge, or whatever you call that position. He called her out several times for calls she made. Any idea what was going on?

Hope it is a class as Mike and Mandy were a great pair and Mike traveled out of town to broadcast matches at his own expense.

Someone had said they were trying to upgrade the broadcasts....only upgrade I saw was the extra cameras. The cameras did look more professional but was very jerky at times.

For someone who never played vball I thought Mike did a heck of a job. This year we don't get coverage of some out of town games and even didn't for the weekend of LaSalle and Temple. Somehow that don't seem like an upgrade.

Per the announcers the said on a couple occasions she kinda made jesters with her hands that were not consistent with what she called. Kinda sounded like she was indecisive a time or two too many for Sheff's taste.

From a novices point of view it appeared there were a lot of call reversals or at least not what I thought I saw. If Brian was at the game (which I am sure he was) he can give us a little more info.

I think the point that sheff was most upset about was a pancake dig that looked like it hit the floor, and he had a really good look at it. It seems like there was another ball that he thought xavier touched as the spike went out of bounds but nothing was called. There was another ball hit deep to the baseline that looked in to me and it was called out.

In the first set we gave Xavier way too many easy balls to run their offense off of. After that we passed the ball well and everyone got into rhythm on offense and blocking. Sheff said at the chalk talk that it takes you a match or two to understand the speed that Xavier's offense runs. After that your blocking will improve against them. I think you saw the blocking improve as the match went on.

Great crowd, very loud. I agree with Beckystxa that it was the best crowd in two years. It was far better than any crowd last season.

After set two I told the people with me that if we continued to pass the ball that well I just didn't see us losing. My nephew noticed how much Rachel, Yvonne and Paige had improved from last season.

EDIT: I should add that Ally is also a different player than she was last season, just an oversight

There was also a GREAT turnout at the chalk talk. I'm guessing there might have been 40 or more people in the room.

Good win. Slow start (ala SLU), but we figured it out and then showed how we play. I watched the last half of the fourth set as I was jockeying between Frericks and Baujan. Im not sure there was 2,000 people there. Still a great turnout. All the students were at Frericks. There were no students at the 3-0 UDMSOC win. Must not have been carding for it, but choosing vball over a previously 1-11 soccer team, well, I can understand that argument.

I started at soccer, moved to Frericks when the sprinkles came, the back to soccer. Saw the two goals off corners, and wins in games 2 and 3 in vball. Not a bad night with my 5 year old. There certainly were more people in Frericks for game 2 than 4.

Avid, thanks for the kind words, wish I could have continued the broadcasts this year. Glad to see we beat up on X again this year. It always brings a tear to my eye watching teams in blue and grey walk away dejectedly after a loss.

Wait, wait... no it doesn't. Not even a little bit.

I just listened to Kelly's post game comments and he mentioned Yvonne Marten's play. She didn't play her best match hitting the ball but as Kelly pointed out she passed the ball GREAT. Kelly has said that the players are meeting with Brittany Dildine in the morning to work on their passing and the results are pretty obvious.

In the final three sets we sided out at nearly 80% which is very very good against a strong serving team.

It appears the broadcasting arrangments this year are as follows:

If it will be streaming video -- it goes to Flyer TV/Radio announcers -- which are student run operations and they are NOT going to be at the level we have come to enjoy.

If it's just audio then we get Mandy Robbe and Shane White - who are both excellent. I would guess these two will also do the A-10 Championships which should be streaming video. I doubt the A-10 or UD would turn that over to a student organization.

Like I said above, we've gotten spoiled the last couple years with professional play-by-play, ect. But I can't argue against a student organization doing the broadcast as part of their college experience. I hate not having the pros do it, but the University's purpose is to offer it's students the best learning opportunites possible and this is one outlet. And as long as they are student-level professional at it, I can't complain. A couple years ago it was not sponsored by a student organization, but two various guys showing up to do it and we had swearing and some out-of-line comments. That's not what you get with Flyer TV/Radio productions, but you clearly get a big step down from Mandy and Shane.

Only "complaint" is if you are going to broadcast ANY sporting event, you need to learn the ref signals. Neither of these two knew the ref calls and that led to a bunch of incorrect comments on their part. Do your homework.
