URI - Another 3-Point Nightmare
It won't get any easier Friday night at URI. They swamped GMU tonight. They play three guards almost the whole game and they went 11 for 18 from the 3-point line tonight! Problem is we seem to bring out the best in all the A-10's good 3-point shooters and we won't have the crowd on our side Friday.

We saw something very interesting tonight, a new twist from Archie - double-team the shooter and force him to turn over the ball - Mason, a really superb two-guard, turned the ball over twice in that situation. I realize it may leave open another guard, but the guard with the ball must figure out a way to get the ball to the other shooter.

I wish they had done that earlier in the game. Mason and Colter were shooting 3s from downtown. Yikes! Can't let URI do that.

Remember that we shot the 3 very well against George Mason also. URI does have guys who can hit 3 but their 11-18 against George Mason might have had something to do with poor defense by GMU.

Flyers went 14-22 from the three point line against GMU, they do not defend the perimeter.

I would argue they were making 3's from Kettering. At least 2, more like 3 or 4 were NBA range. I believe in defending the perimeter, but you know only so many of those will fall during a game, so you need to also be defending inside. You simply hope it's not 1 too many.

We shoot .362 and they shoot .368 from 3.
We shoot .472 and they shoot .444 FG
We shoot .673 and they shoot .660 FTs
Some other key stats we're pretty close in. But they attempt more FGs per game than we do mostly due to us turning the ball over more than they do plus we shoot a tad more FTs than they do.
We're pretty even on 3 point attempts.
So, the key to the game is going to be taking care of the ball. If we don't, we most likely lose. And I also believe we're going to need to see more minutes out of Big Steve since they block almost one more shot a game than we do.
So, taking care of the ball, Steve giving more (quality) minutes than he usually does and also Big Steve having a good offensive game is key. Also, the more 3s they shoot and the less 3s we shoot the better off we are.
Yep, this game is in Big Steve's big hands.

Hassan Martin plays the best post defense in the league. I'd be very surprised if Steve had a good offensive game. Martin is superlative at pushing players off the block with his lower body strength. I like Steve anchoring the D on the back line in this one though.
In a battle between two really good defenses you need some shot-makers that can just make difficult shots. Seems like a good matchup for Pollard and Pierre. Pollard might be able to use his face up game to get some space on Martin.

I don't expect any easy games but I also don't expect a ranked team in February aiming for a top 4 seed to lose to a team that's 14-10 (6-5) with no quality wins (0-7 vs. rpi top 100)

I'm not trying to be a Rhody apologist, but Dayton won't be more than 1 or 2 point favorite. Rhody may be 0-7 vs top100 RPI (also 0-6 vs top50), but five of those games they lost by 5 points or less. They are a dangerous team b/c of their defense keeps them in most games.
Interesting stat about Rhody defense is they are second in the country A/FGM (40.1%). Which speaks to my earlier comment about needing players that can make tough shots.

Most importantly we must not play down to the opponents level. A game like Mason and we win easily. A game like last night and we may lose. The first ten minutes last night were not good. And it was like Archie sent the real Flyers in with 5:50 to go in the game.

According to kenpom, almost coin flip, but Rhody favored to win the game by 1 with a score of 65-64. Sagarin has Dayton favored to win at 54% chance winning by 1.2 points.
Rhody is #80 in sagarin/kenpom.
Beating 90 on the road equivalent of 50 neutral and 20 home See http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/web...y/tiers_of_joy
So Beating Rhody 80 away is equivalent to beating NC, Oregon, or West Virginia at UD Arena!
What would be more impressive? Beating RI #80 on the road or North Carolina #10 at UD Arena. Statistically, equal difficulty!
This is a tough game. BTW, only losses of the year for Rhody at home are: (1) 58-55 losing to Valpo #23 kenpom; and (2) 64-55 losing to #48 St. Joe's when Rhody had even more injuries.
Winning on the road is massively under-valued, it is really hard, particularly versus a really good team like Rhode Island.

Smitty10 has it right
As far as 3pt shooting we are looking at our evil twin. Both teams capable of getting red hot from 3pt, and in the same week can't throw it in the ocean off a long pier.
Dayton/ URI in a virtual deadlock with regard to 3pt shooting=
3pts attempted 450 to 451.
3pts made 163 to 166.
( URI has played one more game than us, so on average we actually have shot slightly more and made slightly more.)

I highly doubt URI will shoot the three ball as well as Mason and Colter. They were hitting off balance 28 ft shots. But if they do there isn't much you can do short of putting two guys on one man.

One thing that we can do is punish them with every miss. Make the long rebound ours and a jail break at the other end. Our guards are out at the perimeter guarding the three. Let them leak out as soon as the shot goes up. We have already beaten teams with hot 3pt shooters, and none better than Jack Gibbs. Got to shut down the rest of the lineup and limit them to one shot. We also could do a better job of face guarding them to deny them the ball. This was mentioned last night.

Interesting thread on Rhody board about UD.
Really interesting in the thread, both Cooke and Pollard were down to RI and UD -- what a difference those two decisions have made ...

The 3 point nightmare I remember is that prayer shot by Dustin Hellenga in 2004 at UD with about 2 seconds left. He was literally falling out of bounds and heaved the ball at the basket before his foot hit the end line.
I thought I was going to throw up on the person in front of me. It might be the most stunned I've ever seen the crowd at UD.

It will take more than that to beat 2005 (I think) against GW. You could've heard a pin drop in the Arena. We had the ball and still managed to lose the game.

Out with the ugly past. Time to quit dwelling on bad defeats and past coaches
Time to start new history. Let's start with a victory at RI this week. Won't be easy, but the next level of the program is to win tough road games and hold off underdogs who want to salvage their season by beating UD.

Someone once told me Kyle Davis took E.C. Matthews scholarship. E.C. was down to UD and URI and Kyle committed first.
Go to Verbal Commits and look at URI. They have recruited 3* and 4* kids while most other A10 schools are recruiting 2* and 3*.
http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/rhode-island
They have been hurt by injuries this year, but when they get E.C. Matthews back next year, they may be the favorite over us in the A10. They have a very talented and deep junior class with great underclassman as well.
Does anyone know if E.C. Matthews has applied for another year of eligibility or how that process works since he was hurt in the 1st or 2nd game of the year?

Jon Rothstein is reporting Hassan Martin is done for year with a knee injury.
Talk about getting bit by the injury bug...things keep getting worse for URI.
