GM Match
If you can hold a team under 15-16 points in a set you dominated. I expect us to sweep GM. We will see how dominate we are in doing so.
Also, against weaker talent you sometimes don't get a lot of opportunities to both block and dig balls. There just aren't as many coming you way, so if the team doesn't have big numbers in these categories, it won't surprise me.

UD wins set 1 25-16. Taking care of business just like an experienced team should...oh wait...we don't have that much experience, so great job ladies.

UD wins the 2nd 25-19. Our hitting percentage dropped some that set. Jess and Amber did not play. We went with 3 juniors - Jane, Maggie, Laura. 3 sophmores - Margo, Kendyll, Lauren. 3 freshmen - Jamie, Jordan, Sierra, who always seems to get a block when she comes in. She got 2 this set.
I'd say this match is going exactly as the game plan was drawn up. Also Kendyll served and had a 4-5 point run. And Jordan attacked out of the back. All good experience.

I'll bet club and high school teams tried to avoid Sierra's blocking, she definitely has great timing

25-22 GMU in the third. TM playing whole squad and letting most of them play through their mistakes. Expect a more normal lineup for set 4.

GW takes the 3rd set 22-25. Don't read too much into it since UD played mostly subs. Jane did not start the set but came back in to set about 1/2 way thru. I expect Jane to play all of set 4 but we will see.
A couple bright spots are Jamie moved over to left OH and did well. She's having a big match hitting over 400. Bri started at right OH and got 2 blocks. Right OH's number one job is to stop your opponents best left OH. Bri hasn't blocked that well during her time on the court this year so I'm sure they have been working on it and she put up two blocks this set which is excellent.
Bruns did not play this set but is having a monster match, so might see her back in the rotation in set 4.

GM just took its final TO with UD up 11-3. UD starters have all returned.

UD wins 4th 25-11 with starting rotation. Peterson had another monster offensive match taking 29 swings (the most for UD) with only 2 errors which is way under a 10% error rate which is very hard to do. Leading the team with 16 kills and hitting 483. And she got 3 blocks. She will be the A10 ROW again. 4th time in 5 weeks?

It is great to get some of the younger players some playing time and it sounds like they were productive. But, you can't risk a fifth set without returning your starters

Bruns - BeckysTXA post # 7
I know GM was not a real strong opponent, but Bruns had the final two kills (for UD points 24 & 25 in both the first two sets ). Hopefully her serving will get better.
Looking forward to who will be the impact players against SLU.
Props to TH for giving the young players significant time in set 3.
I still think next year is our major impact year. Imagine if Brooke's first year is better than Jamie's is so far.

We can put together a pretty magical year this year if this team challenges and pushes itself the rest of the way. It will take a lot of work but that's what Flyer Volleyball is all about. Like you posted in another thread, we have to get better at blocking and serving.
But I agree, next year could be our best ever if we stay healthy.

The third set (and fourth, somewhat) were very interesting to watch play out. The third set was 2nd stringers except for Wolf/Shutter. Then Giardina was replaced with Emmenecker at 10-12. Horsmon never called a timeout, and when GM did call one, Horsmon wasn't the one talking to the girls. He seemed to want them to pull it out on their own. Lost by 3.
Came out with the 1st stringers in the 4th set, and took a huge lead, and GM blew their 2 timeouts early as mentioned before. Again, during timeouts, Horsmon allowed the assistant coaches talk to the girls and he just stood off to the side.
It was also fun watching the 4th set serves. Both Erhahon and Wolf were serving towards the direct center of the opposing court and caught them off guard a ton. GM had different sets for receiving. 1 set of 4 across. 1 set of 3 across hiding 1. 1 set of 2-and-2. I was waiting for them to have all 6 across in the back row to receive.
Onto next weekend!

Interesting observations with the time outs. I'm not sure this young team has found its "groove" when it comes to leadership. Factor that into the time out observations and you have to wonder if TH was using the moment as an opportunity for a leader(s) to step up.

Hard to believe but according to the stats there was only 1 block between SLU and GW today.
