IDs of the '67 runner-up team
Pix in today's DDN accompanying Arch's story . . . would someone be so kind to identify the players, coaches, managers. Recognize May and I think Sadlier and Coach Donoher . . . but hazy on the rest:

I know many, but not all.
Back row, L-R: Dan Sadlier, Dan Obravac, Ned Sharpenter, and Tom Heckman.
Front row, L-R: (dunno), (dunno), Rudy Waterman, (dunno), Jim Wannemacher, Gene Klaus, (dunno), (dunno), Bobby Joe Hooper, Don May, and Glinder Torain.
So that's 10 ID'd and 5 "dunno"s. I could do the research, but I have to go home to get ready for the game!

11 - John Samanich
23- Jim Wannemacher
14 - Gene Klaus
32 - Dennis Papp
30 - Dave Inderrieden
42 - Bobby Joe Hooper
21 - Don May
43 - Glinder Torain

Dunno. Junior would have been @ 36-37 years old when that picture was taken. That guy looks to be in his early 20s.

Quite a story behind the player, Rudy Waterman. He really didn't get to play much, but I think there was an injury that gave him additional playing time. And all of a sudden, he became a scoring machine. He had a very quick first-step to the bucket and was a sudden star! He became marred in controversy after the season ended. Notice one thing about the players of that era...they were not nearly as strong physically as the players today. In fact, in that era, weights and strength training were frowned upon for basketball players. It was thought that they would become "muscle-bound" and lose their shooting touches.

If I remember correctly, Rudy Waterman was from NYC or Long Island and was about 6'3" and was the "shooting guard" although I don't think that designation existed then. Thinking back, he was much like Charles Cooke - looking to shoot or drive first and not seeing open men.
I always thought there was a little friction between May \ Hooper and Waterman. If I remember correctly, after the loss to UCLA, there was a celebration in the old arena and Waterman and \ or Torrain were not there. When Waterman was on, he was a scoring machine. Don't know what ever happened to him. I think Glinder Torain went on to be a doctor someplace.
I remember Denny Papp - The Mad Bomber - before the era of the three point shot. He would come in for one purpose only - long range jump shots. I think Glinder Torain was out 6/6" center for most of the year and after our win over NC, I think there was a comment in a newspaper that Donoher was up all night trying to figure out how UD was going to defend against UCLA with a 6'6" center so he used Obravac.
Long time ago , nice memories but nice picture.
