Former Coach James Carter: 1911-2012

Stumbled across this online. Purdue grad, high school history teacher, worked on atomic bomb!

Coached UD from 1939-47 with a losing record, but expanded our visibility and scheduling. Arguably set the table for breakout Blackburn Era. Mentions he started a black player in '47. Anyone know who?

That's a great read. Although it says he coached at UD til 1947, it also says he left and worked on the Manhatten project in '43.

Charles "Benny" Jones

The color barrier at Dayton was broken by Charles "Benny" Jones in the 1945-46 season. Charles “Benny” Jones was already on the UD squad when Blackburn took over in 1947.

He wa 6-2 from Cincinnati Withrow, 1945-1948.

Wow, gotta say, I never knew we had another Flyer's living coach among us so recently. And one who obviously was an integral part of building the program into what it is today. I looked up some things in the media guide and he's the one who put Xavier on our schedule regularly. Hadn't played them in 8 years and then only one season after he took over were they not on our schedule until they moved to the NBE.

Seems a shame that he's so unknown to us when he was among the living until 5 years ago.

FYI...At the college level, African-American athletes such as Paul Robeson at Rutgers University, Wilbur Wood at Nebraska, Fenwick Watkins at the University of Vermont and Cumberland Posey at Penn State and Duquesne became basketball stars before World War I in white major-college programs.

George Gregory, Jr., the 6'-4" captain and center of the Columbia University team from 1928–1931, became the first African American all-American college basketball player, in 1931.

The UD Media Guide says: "Program suspended because of
World War II from 1943 to 1945."

Matt Schwade from FlyerHoops.net wrote a nice piece on Coach Carter and asked me to post it here:
