Very early A10 '14-'15 preview
1. VCU, 2. UD, 3. Richmond seem about right. The rest of the league could be a toss-up. There will still be a lot of off-season movement though (transfers, injuries, etc.).

A fair assessment
I think we will have equivalent talent before Arch is finished with roster additions for 14/15.
But will the Coach have the same Magic Sauce the blended the team? Sure hope he does and can't wait to see the next edition of the Flyers.

Crazy as it sounds, Archie still has some unfinished biz to tend to in the A10. I'm hoping that the next edition of the Flyers regroups after losing DO Vee and Kavs, blends new guys into the lineup in much the same way this year's team came in waves...AND....focuses on being a powerhouse in the A10.

As we saw this year, the difference between the top 6 teams is very slim. More about the match-ups. I don't think anyone matches up good against VCU. After that, we'll see.

This is very encouraging...I don't know who the other A10 teams are losing to graduation...it will be tough to replace Kavanaugh, Oliver, and Sanford.
84 and 85 with Coach Donoher was the last time UD danced in back to back years under the same hc.

I hope we don't turn into La Salle. La Salle lost 'very little' from their Sweet 16 team. Really, just one player. Arguably their best, but like Dayton, La Salle's Sweet 16 team didn't really rely on any single player. And they were deep enough that they should have been able to just spread around some minutes and be even better once you add in a year of experience. But apparently Ramon Galloway really was that important to their team, even though the stats made it look like they should have been just as good or even better the next year.
We are losing 3 key contributors this year. We hope the combination of more experience for underclassmen and the addition of the freshmen makes up for the loss of Kav/Vee. I don't think we're replacing DMO at all - just have to hope that his contributions/leadership weren't the real key to this season.

We will not miss Vee. We have D. Davis and a bunch of guards to step up. We have very little to replace Kav or Oliver.

The biggest difference is in the coaching at the 2 schools. There was a post, either here or on the A10 board that called into question the coaching at LaSalle, this was last season, near the end of the season so it was when they were going well. Basically it broke it down like this, Dr G pretty, in the author's opinion appeared to just roll the ball out there and have his guys "go at it" Now I'm sure they're system is a little more complicated than that, but Galloway strived in a low structure system, he was the guy w/ the NBA like skill level to break down a defense one on one and make a play. When they lost that, they lost a huge chunk of their offense.
Conversely, if you watched UD, when they were at their best, they were a team that shared the ball exceptionally well, they'd make the extra pass to go from a good shot, to a great shot. UD struggled offensively when ball movement and player movement came to a standstill. UD's offense should be fine next season assuming the keep running Archie's system (and there is little doubt of that happening in my mind). Even more importantly, they became pretty tough on the defensive end as the season dragged along, they were pretty darn tough on the defensive end despite being "smaller" on the inside than Ohio State, Syracuse and Stanford. LaSalle has never been good defensively under Dr G.
When I think of Dr G, outside of last season's run, I think primarily of a coach that saw Aaric Murry, all 6'-10" of him with great athleticism and strength to do great things inside, take multiple 3 pointers despite not having the skill set to hit those at a comfortable pace. Dr G would put him on the bench for an extended period while Murray pouted on the bench, then Dr G would put him back in the game and watch as Murray hoisted up another 3 pointer. It was a system with little structure and until Galloway developed, not enough talent to break down oppossing defenses one on one.
Repeating the success in the NCAA tournament this season is going to be tough. This team really wasn't that far away from not even making the tournament, imagine a loss at St Louis and no big comeback at Duquesne? That team is in the NIT, rarther than the elite 8, so don't let the elite 8 cloud your vision too much, but I don't worry about them falling like LaSalle. LaSalle was a team destined to fall because there was little to rely on. UD has a foundation to build upon, has an offensive system that has successfully worked with multiple players and skill sets over the last 3 seasons, and a defensive system that was finally able to put it together.

Kav did this last half of the season what an upperclassman should do---and to his credit. However, we have been so starved for a 5 spot centerpiece that we accept "average" as being "very good". Archie will have us in position to once again cover the 5 by committee or whatever. I think the wildcard is another year of improvement by Robinson, and then development by Steve M by the middle of the A10 schedule. Will miss Kav about like we missed Huelsman, that is to say 'sometimes".
We can replace Oliver's numbers by committee.
The thing we will need badly is his leadership, and we will miss the savvy of 3 Seniors. We just can't take a pill and replace the coolness under pressure.
I think the summary of us at 25 is realistic.
