Jeez... Obi is unreal

Good Lord! Going against a bunch of players in the NBA right now... Melo (red pants), CJ McCollum, the big guy is Enes Kanter, etc.
Might be the most talented player to play at UD in quite some time... Can't wait to see him develop!

Pick up game is a pick up game but I saw:
1. A 15 foot turnaround with back to basket. Never saw a UD big do that.
2. Back to bucket pivot turnaround jumper
3. Driving scoop shot
4. Legit three point form with quick release
5. Several nice dunks
6. No fear
Can't wait for season

I'm not much for highlight reels - because who knows how long a guy played to get 5 good clips together.
HOWEVER, that dunk at the end is insane. I don't care how many times you practice that - if you throw that down on your 100th attempt you've done something special.

The dunks were great, but I was most impressed by that over-under scoop shot. He had to shift from his right hand to his left to complete the play. That shows finesse.

This is exciting. We typically don’t get the off-season buzz that other schools get. Today, Duke fans watched Zion Williamson dunk from the free throw line for the world to see. Also today, Dayton fans watched ObI Toppin jam on Enes Kanter and Carmelo Anthony.
Before I get too far ahead of myself, I want to say how reaffirming this post should be to us Flyers. I believe we are just beginning to reap the rewards of 2014’s magical run. I don’t say that because of this video alone, but a combination of hyped up athletes, increased social media presence, and a second round draft pick. The attention drawn from Kostas in the draft and this post through Bleacher Report can not go understated.
This is a small victory in a larger war and I, for one, am happy.

I think we all recognize that NBA guys play "All Star Game defense" in pickup games at least part of the time. (Jordan being the exception)
And that baseline turnaround fadeaway is a relatively bad game-time shot, as is having the 6'10" guy take 2 dribbles left and pull up from 19' with a guy pretty close to him.
But the fact that he CAN (and look good doing it!) is something I don't think we've had on our team in many many years. Wright never looked that good shooting the ball. Neither did Pollard, Pierre (his shots were fundamental), maybe Chris Johnson, and all those guys were only 6'6". . . I can't think of a comparison??
WOW.

He is going to be a freshman. Think about what is in the video. Yes, there is defense, foul trouble, and occasionally being out of place yet to come as expected with a freshman.
But those are fantastic moves and show smoothness and balance that we do not see from freshman. Especially any that were 6'10" and freshman.
Ashman? Waleskowski? Finn?
I think him and Cunningham will be fun to watch.

The interesting part is that he is still growing. While this board anguished over the lack of a 2018 recruit for rebounding help it's just possible AG knew something. Especially when he passed on chasing a number of tall transfers that just didn't fit his eye. Now with Jordy coming in next season, we should be able to take some giant steps forward in the paint.
And his presence in the middle in practice should raise the bar for those looking to improve.
These are some really exciting developments in the last few weeks.

Anybody have any insight into how he was invited? It seems a bit random since he wasn't exactly a 5 star recruit, and he hasn't yet had a chance to show anything at the collegiate level. Regardless, I love some of the moves there, especially for a freshman of his size.

True, another big step. But the team chemistry already looks pretty good in the interviews and clips we have been privy to see.
Not in any way being negative, but Anthony recruited some very good talent to Alabama. And with that in mind the results were marginal just to support your concerns.

And who knows if Kostas took note of Obi’s development last year in practice and wondered if it would affect his playing time if he stayed?

This one shows more highlights from the open run. Obi is in there a couple of times getting taken to the basket. At first that disappointed me. Then I watched again and pretty sure it's JR Smith and Kyle Anderson. I think Obi gets a pass on that...

Ok- I’m very excited. Its been years since we’ve had a complete unknown facing us after a disappointing but probably necessary transitional season. I’m starting to wonder if 2017/18 players saw the development of Obi and began to believe they might not be gaining minutes but rather losing minutes. Either way- I don’t ever remember seeing a UD freshman, redshirt or otherwise go against NBA players and appear to fit in. From an athletic perspective- i think Chris Wright could have. Obi seems to have used his redshirt year very wisely. I am totally psyched for this year.

Tend to agree with you 67, on the excitement scale. Obi and Jordy give us a whole 'nother look going forward.
Instead of a few guys with potential, there is potential everywhere you look. AG did not "settle" for some height. He not only landed a talented 5, but a potential family of them.
But, as to the nervousness over playing time, you might be overthinking that one. The players AG seems to target are more than anxious to compete for spots, and they all want to win at the NCAA level regardless of who logs the stats. I sense no fear of competition in the minds of all the incumbants + the newbies.

I don't want to speak for 67 but I think in terms of losing playing time he was referring to three guys who decided not to stay (X, KA, MS.)

All 3 were gone regardless of Obi. X/AG were unfortunately oil and water. Kostas would have left in any case because he was allergic to school work with an eye on going pro. Matej couldn't beat out Gruden.

Impressive clips & nice story.
But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Obi has yet to play a minute of college ball and, while he’s clearly athletic and talented, so are scores of other PFs across the NCAA. I hope he’s a pleasant surprise this season and is a solid part of our return to the big dance for the next four years, but he’s not LeBron.

Gave this a little thought. LaBron is certainly a major stretch, but Justin Tillman-ish projections are not. I could see Obi on a similar progression.

I saw this when it popped up on my phone yesterday. Didn't realize they were NBA players, but wondered how the game came about. Thanks for the link to The Athletic article.
Yes, it's 2 /1/2 months till the season starts (which seems pretty close to me, lol), but wow! Can't help feeling amazed and hopeful for the season.

Also a story in the Athletic on Jake Walter, 7' X freshman to be. Jake is the son of former NFL lineman, Joe Walter. He is not enrolled in school, and is having some kind of legal matter.

If I recall correctly, AG beat out Rhode Island for Obi's services. I suspect he is going to end up as one of those guys that UD fans have always seen on other A10 teams. You know, the "how did RI (or St. Bona, or fill in about 5 other teams) get THIS guy when UD has all the recruiting advantages" kind of guy. I think we're going to enjoy watching him over the next several years and kudos to coach Grant for closing the deal in a very short recruiting window last spring.

IIRC Grant and Obi and some family members were at a restaurant when Obi told Grant he would come to Dayton. Grant had the grant-in-aid paperwork in his car which he promptly retrieved and Obi signed.
