A-10 Indoor T&F Champs!!!

I posted this on the Track and Field forum but few folks look there. The ladies indoor track and field team tied Charlotte for the title today. Charlotte has twice the scholarships, better weather, and has been the champs for the past 3 years. What this team has done to close the gap in the last 3 years is nothing short of amazing. Dayton was second by 36 points last year but made up the difference this year.

Football - PFL co-champs
Volleyball - A-10 Season Title, A-10 Tournament title, 2nd Round NCAA
Women's Cross Country - A-10 Title
Men's Cross Country - A-10 Third
Women's Soccer - A-10 Season Title, A-10 Tournament Title, 2nd Round NCAA
Men's Soccer - A-10 Season Title, A-10 Tournament Second
Women's Indoor T&F - A-10 Title
Men's Hoops-?
Women's Hoops?

Wow. Look at that overall conference dominance. Hopefully the basketball teams can add to that success.

Amazing progress

To think when we were in the MCC, C-USA didn't want us because along with a poor BB program (the OB years) the rest of the atheletic program was pathetic. Kodos to the administration on the fine job they have done upgrading the whole program. The results this year border on unbelievable.

Quick scan through the Director's Cup Standings has Dayton in 47th out of all colleges and universities in an overall athletics' standing. They are 6th out of all schools that do not participate in FBS football. They are 1st out of all Atlantic 10 schools. They are ahead of all Ohio schools not named Ohio State.

These are the final fall standings, released January 14th. The first winter standings are released March 11th (my birthday). Now, obviously this ranking will drop (Dayton finished 153rd last year), but it never hurts to get out to a quick start. Last year St. Louis tied at 153rd, Temple was 152nd, Richmond was 131st, Xavier was 122nd and UMass was 114th. Last year, out of Ohio schools, Cincinnati finished 129th, Xavier 122nd, Cleveland State 113th, Miami 107th, Akron 97th, Kent State 83rd and Ohio State 10th.

How have UD's teams been doing this year compared to last year's? It sounds like they're doing a little better than last year (props to the track and field team). Through the fall standings this year and last, Dayton's made up 50 points (for 100 total). If the men and women's basketball teams simply make the NCAAT (which both appear likely at the moment) but don't win a single game, that's another 50 combined points. If they each win one, that's 25 more apiece. Being conservative, and they only add on the 25 apiece for each team making it, that's a total of 150 (50 more than last year). That's good enough for 114th in the country (which would've tied UMass last year for best in the A 10). Say the baseball team makes the NCAAT this year - I assume they'll be pretty good since they were A 10 regular season champs last year - that's another 25 points and would put them in 101st place last year, just 2 points out of the top 100.

I kind of rambled but it's something to follow, seeing as most of you like sports and UD sports in general. It'd be nice to see them finish in the top 125 this year and challenge for the top spot in the A 10.

We can also all be very proud that UD has accomplished all of this while maintaining our academic integrity and attracting a great group of kids to the University!
