Taking stock

This was a pretty difficult year to get a good handle on this team's upside. Big part of the problem was the A10 was not very good this year - and that might be kind. If you don't agree, just take a look at what the A10 did collectively against the BigTen (and not many people are saying this a particularly good B10 this year).

Overall, A10 went 1-7 against the BigTen. Most of the games were on neutral courts, and many of the losses were to the middle or bottom of the Big Ten. Some of the lowlights included UD losing to Nebraska (13th out of 14 in B10), VCU getting pounded by the Illini (losing record in B10) and Rutgers (last place team in B10) pounding Fordham.

So heading into March Madness, what do we know (or think we know) about UD:

1. DEFENSE is the key for this team.
2. They typically are very solid in "winning time" (last four minutes).
3. When they move and share the ball, they have a pretty balanced attack.
4. They don't quit.

Trouble spots:

1. Rebounding/inside presence. Josh's injury and losing Big Steve really hurt.
2. Starting numerous games poorly. Not sure why that happens so often to a Senior laden and well coached team - thoughts from others?
3. Propensity to go through extended scoring droughts - particularly when they stop moving the ball.
4. Working against teams that play zone and/or pressure the ball up top.

I think a Sweet 16 run would be an amazing accomplishment. Would really help to stay off the 8/9 line. They need to play D for 40 minutes - that overcomes a lot of shortfalls. Keep it close and then I like this team's chances over the last four minutes.

I don't disagree with your bullet points, but it is pretty easy to get a handle on the upside of this team and what they have moving forward. Not sure if that was what you were getting at, but the positives from this team are easy to identify, just as the negatives.

A10 us down...not a big deal. It was UD's gain in terms of regular season play. Not too concerned with some of the OOC losses with the adjustments and things they had to deal with regarding roles.

Last night was a bummer, but in no way defines this season. It has been pretty good all things considered for us and for any program for that matter.

My thoughts:

I don't think UD plays very well against the zone and if they face one Scootch and JC will need to up their game- the good news is that both are very capable and unless we face Syracuse- i don't think we'll see too much zone as P5 conferences don't usually lower themselves to playing a zone even if it means a loss.

This team lives and dies on its defense; if they're locked in, they will be very tough to beat and they can turn that into quick offense- Flyer BB at its best.

This team seems very close- teamwork and trust and love goes a long way.

XW is looking like a very peaking 3-point shooter and his presence will be very important to advance.

I'd be very surprised at an early exit, not saying it couldn't happen...

I live and die with UD basketball- this is my all-time favorite and that includes a lot of great teams; 66/68', 73/74', 83/84', 13/14' - good luck seniors - make us proud

I think in the past couple of years, we were much more aggressive against the zones than we have been this year. But we also had Pierre as our guy in the middle of the zone that we used to facilitate things. This year, we just seem content on passing the ball around the perimeter instead of trying to attack the zone.

Very accurate post - one thing I have noted this year - if we are within 4 points at the 4 minute mark we win. No exceptions.

UD needs somebody/anybody to play bookend with Pollard who is not a great rebounder as it is. Mikesell gets abused defensively, Miller incapable at this time, XW does not possess the size/strength to really bang inside defensively (great weak side defender in blocking shots). That leaves Josh. He simply has to continue to play BIG with big minutes and that's getting 8-10 rpg and/or putting himself on other big bodies so others can hit the boards.......I'm not worried one bit about this teams offense unless it gets in a shoot-out..Hit the boards HARD and get the 50/50 balls. They have to play blue collar ball because that is exactly who they are..

There is going to be a big-time intensity brought to the A10 tourney by several teams as everybody is starting 0-0.
