Iona Game Thoughts
Iona was a dangerous and offensively explosive opponent. But we played a fine game. Pierre dominated the game. We look like a very good team sometimes.

Pierre had big numbers but my player of the game was Sanford. Played well and within himself. Got us points when we needed them. He got special mention by Arch on the post game show for how well he has embraced his role of coming off the bench.

We played with great energy. Owned the boards so they couldn't run. But really, on our worst defensive night of the season we were not as porous as Iona. Looked like a layup drill.

DP was named POG, but it really was a team effort. The assist total is always the telling stat for me and ours just kept rising. Iona finally started to score more when their assist numbers started to climb. But for a lot of the 2nd half they were just chucking up clunkers in a panic.
I think sometimes our guys can read minds or lips. The lead was under 16 again and not 30 secs after I said to my seat-mates, "OK. We need "V for 3", BOOM he swished a 3!
I was so glad to see AG score and get some rebounds in the 8 mins he played because his family was there tonight. Kav came in late and scored. Maybe he's seeing the handwriting on the wall and will get his act together.
On to USC and another win!

hopefully he gets those out of his system this year.
The game is probably much more physical than he was prepared for with his quickness and assist capability. Takes a lot more to finish in D1 ball!

1. Alex's 2 dunks. He had 2 at the end of the 2011-12 season and missed one last year.
2. 96 points. We did that last year against Fordham. Last time we scored 100 pts was in the 1999-2000 season against Coastal Carolina 104-79.

Vee has great hops and long arms. He gets way up when he is contested near the rim. He is a very good finisher there. He has a very nice fall-away 10 ft jumper too. That is hard to stop.

Missing layups is not uncommon for freshaman point guards. They have a tendency to get themselves in position where they don't know how to or can't finish. It's a learning experience.

Scoochie was 3-8 tonight, 2-5 inside the arc (40%), 1-3 outside the arc (33%), and 2-2 from the line. Nine points, plus two rebounds, three assists, one block, one steal, and no turnovers in 20 minutes - I'll take that stat line for our back-up point guard any day.

Scoochie looks pretty good to me. He has some learning to do about what he can get away with when he goes to the rim at this level and that will come. His greatest assets right now, IMO, are his passing and his ability to handle the ball under pressure. I like how well-rounded our team is. It seems like we have one of everything except a 7-footer.
Also, there were some nice comments about Dayton during the telecast tonight. The announcers were chatting about how Dayton attracts good talent because college basketball is king in Dayton and the community really supports the team. They also said something like, "There is no team in college basketball who has suprised this year like Dayton".

DP had a monster game and was clearly the best player on the court with a double double and his assists. Stan Van Gundy raved about his play on NBC Sports channel's national telecast. While Sanford was good, Pierre had the best game by a Flyer this year and was in a word...spectacular!

Just finished watching a tape of the game......had some family business that couldn't wait earlier. My, my.....it looks like the Flyers beat the spread handily and showed a little mean streak too.
When Iona closed to 6 points just before the half the Flyers went right out and built up the lead again. Nice, unselfish play all around. Pierre, Sanford, Price, heck, the whole team was impressive.
If we keep playing this way good things are on the horizon.

Pierre may have had the better game last night, but Vee has the best inside game--layups, floaters, fall-aways--of any guard UD has had since Negele Knight.

This was a solid game. Our defense was pretty good, we did a really good job of taking away the dribble drive in this game and forcing 3's.
And frankly on offense, DESPITE THE ZONE (!) we pretty much did whatever we wanted.
It was a nice relaxing game that really never felt in doubt after we got up 10+ in the opening 10 minutes. Enjoyable as a fan to see a team that can make it look this easy on the offensive side of the ball.

Fret not about who you think the POG was last night as - back by popular demand - the Golden Testicle Awards will be handed out by yours truly once we begin A10 play.
You're welcome.

Nice Comments From an Iona Fan.....
We lost to a better team....plain and simple....let's move on
I agree.
This Dayton team could be this years VCU. They go 11 deep with minimal drop off, a nice mix of size, speed and a number of versatile small forward types.
Would not be surprised to see them in the sweet 16 or deeper.

To many it may seem like a small thing, but I saw something last night I haven't seen in a long time from someone in a Flyer uniform. I saw a guard, Scootchie, actually feed the low post with a very accurate pass.

It's good for our confidence to beat a zone that bad, but Iona changed from one pitiful zone to another so often that they were confused themselves. Some teams don't have defense in their DNA, but Iona takes that one step further, they didn't have a DNA at all.
They sure have a few guys that can shoot 3's though. Their fans at a home game must go nuts when they start draining 3's.
On Scoochie finishing, he is expending so much energy beating his man down court he simply lacks the strength to finish well. There are great times ahead for that lad.

Iona shot the ball well. They are a tough matchup. Their guards are tall and can shoot it from deep, their big guy (Laury) can attack off the bounce. Good thing for their opponents that they are not overly interested in defending or rebounding.
Good: Most aggressive I have ever seen Pierre in chasing rebounds.
Bad: Sibert airballed at least two layups.
Good: Vee had the mid range game in high gear and made it look easy ... it isn't.
Bad: Oliver airballed his only three ... although it ended up being a nice pass to Pierre.
Good: Gavs had two dunks.
Bad: Really hard to have Pollard and Davis on the floor at the same time. Iona defenders played about 8 feet off of both of them meaning there were no gaps in the zone.
Good: offensive rebounding
Good: Price as a three point shooter. Has long range and quick release.

The other thing about Scoochie is on defense. He and I think Kyle Davis are always going for that poke from behind steal. He tried one last night and got called for a foul. I think Archie let him know about it. I think that is one of those high school moves that does not get called as foul as often in high school but you aren't getting away with it as often in college.

There was a time when we had both of them and Scoochie on the floor together. I think Pierre was out there too. Not sure of the 5th. I don't think that group should ever be on the floor together.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned, is the confidence in which Price is shooting the 3. He shot a decent % from the perimeter last year, but it wasn't good enough (for him) as both his and Archie's mention of all the work he put into his perimeter jumper. Step forward to this season, and he's hitting at an even better clip, though generally only taking it when wide open. (which is good, but you'd like to see your gaurds hit a decent clip when wide open) Considering how many talented slashers UD has, Pierre, Siebert, Devo & Sanford, Price should get a good amount of open 3 pointers and to his credit he's shown no hesitation taking and making those shots.
Last night, however, he had the step back 3 pointer as well as another one that he created on his own. I don't care what defense you're playing, the step back 3 pointer is something you create on your own and you only shot it when you're shooting with complete confidence.

Gavs, Pollard, Pierre, Davis & Scoochie (could have been price for a bit as well) were in together for a decent stretch from about the 10 min mark to the 6 min mark. Not your ideal offensive grouping. Pollard has so much length and explosion he's going to pick up a bunch of fouls. He needs to start making them if he ever wants to be a consistant presence on the court. As far as Scott & Jalen have come since they arrived at UD, I have little doubt that Archie will have Pollard shooting free throws at an acceptable rate before his career is done, if not sooner.

Observations
- I think a wheel chair team could have scored 75 against Iona No defensive mid set.
- UD played very good defense for the first 10-12 minutes of each half. Then they let up and showed some old tendencies. This team is still young in some ways and still needs to build more killer instinct.
- Archie was super worried about Iona. Looking back, I think he was more worried about which UD team would show up, committed or overconfident. He has to be very pleased with the overall UD team that showed up.
- UD continues to win rebounding and loose ball battles. This team flat out outhustles opponents. Can't tell how many times I saw UD pull down in rebounds when they were the only home jersey in the area.
- Outstanding game from Pierre. More important than points in my mind was the assist and rebound numbers. He won some of those loose balls.
- Khari Price continues to wow me. I knew he was a last minute pick up, so I have never expected much. Coaches said someone found him and that he is a winner. I have always love his defense. Now as a shooter, I am stunned! It is very obvious both defense and offense drops off when he is out of the game. Scoochie is good and will be very good, but right now Price is much, much better.
- Good to see Gav play well on both ends of the court. He was good on O and bad on D against CMU. Last night, great floor game on both ends!!!
- I would like to see Sibert get in the flow more.
- I would like to see Scoochie finish better on layups. He is a freshman who needs more strength and experience. He will be good. We will have a nice point guard tandem next year. He will make some plays this year.
- DMO seems to have lost his magic 3 point Maui shooting touch. He will be erratic from 3 all year. He played a solid floor game again
- I can't look any more when Pollard is at the foul line. He makes London Warren and Charles Little look like Rick Barry. 3 of 16 on free throws now. Good grief!!
Team is deep and every night it can be someone else. Hard to coach and plan against. Sunday they will need their defensive intensity as points won't come as easy.
Finally, fun game to watch. Much more fun than a 45-42 game against St. Louis in the past. The fans got into the game because of the pace of play, level of play and some of the highlight reel plays. Was a good night for UD.

Only saw first half but I liked what I saw:
Very patient on offense (most of the time) but opportunistic when the opportunities were there to race down the floor.
We're gonna be calling Schoochie - "The Pickpocket" - before too long.
Love seeing KP banging it in from the outside. That will be a lethal weapon if he can keep draining it from the perimeter.
I thought they worked the ball around and into the interior of the zone very well, and always looked to make a better pass. There were numerous times when one of the guys would pass up an open outside shot to work for a better one by looking for cracks in the zone.
Now be consistent. Draw from this W and build some "team" momentum.

Schoochie will miss some of those layups because they are tough shots. Has he ever missed a wide open, uncontested layup? I do not remember one. It is great the way he pushes the ball and penetrates to get to the rim. That makes it tough on defenses because Price almost never penetrates. These are tough shots, at full speed with tough defenders. Many layups are tougher than some three point shots. Those point blank shots that Vee makes are very, very tough shots. I believe in Miller and you can tell he has no problem with Schoochie taking these shots.

What I really liked was the defensive rotation. We were quick to leave the cutter and double the post, forcing the post 12 feet from the basket. As soon as the ball and the post were disturbed, our doubling defender recovered very efficiently and always found his guy.
This is going to be big all season. Effective interior D. The double also jams up penetration.
Ball movement against the zone was just fine, but like others have mentioned, I don't think Iona knew what zone they were in half of the time.
I think AM has found his rotations. The current post play isn't getting into foul trouble, so he can rely on rotations out of the gate instead of having to adjust due to foul trouble. It also appears that the further 35 is down the bench, the more unified the guys look on the floor. Not to say it isn't just by chance, but animosity can appear when guys that were busting their hump last season didn't get rewarded at the beginning of this season.
That was a good win. If they keep this going and take care of business headed into A10 play, the results are going to be better than anticipated.

Figgie, I turn to you, the stats-man for this question:
When was the last time someone made 8 three pointers in the Arena? English went 8-10 and I don't think he ever hit the rim on any of his makes.
Side note: Khari Price also shot 80%, but only took 5 shots (which made sense with the way the game went). How often have you seen a game where two guys took 5 or more threes and shot 80% or greater?

This is the best Flyer team I've had the pleasure to watch since the Wally/Finn days. Gonna just sit back and enjoy it, especially when I get to collect my winnings from my bartender buddy who gave me 2/1 odds on us making it to the Dance this year!!

I agree. I think this team blends well. They have fine individual players and on top of that they have role players to fill all the necessary holes (except at center, IMO). When they concentrate on playing good defense, they can take anyone down.

The guard play has been the biggest unexpected surprise from what I'm seeing. I thought it was our biggest question mark coming into the season and here we have three guards who I'm quite comfortable watching any of them bring the ball up the court. I really was expecting Price to become a serviceable backup PG with the hope that Smith or Davis would take over the majority of the minutes.
I think Price can have a great career as a Flyer. I just hope his knee issues don't derail it, but at least we now know that Archie has quality multiple options at PG.

I have a basketball man crush on Price. Being a former PG with a similar play style, I absolutely love watching him play. Leave him open, he hurts you. Guard him, he spins around you and hooks someone else up with a crisp pass so they can hurt you. Let him get to the front of the pack, and he's laying it in. Classic, nothing fancy, fundamental PG play! Last year I liked him better than Dillard, and this year, I absolutely trust him to be our heartbeat.
Vee looked great. He's always going to shoot the ball, for better or worse. Yesterday his shots were falling, and he's always an asset when that happens. When it's not, better have the team crash the boards when he touches the ball... ha-ha
Pierre was our fire. Hustle, fighting for the ball, working to the hoop. It's great to see him coming back around. We're a different team when he's on his game.
To think, we did that much damage and Sibert and DMO we off. Fire on all cylinders and we're a handful!

Not to step on FIggie's toes, but I believe Josh Parker vs Fordham on 1/22/11was the last time:

Side note: Khari Price also shot 80%, but only took 5 shots (which made sense with the way the game went). How often have you seen a game where two guys took 5 or more threes and shot 80% or greater?
|
I haven't kept track of opposing players, but since the 01-02 season, only Josh Parker has made 8 3pts in a game at the Arena (or anywhere, for that matter). January 22, 2011 against Fordham, he went 8-14 from the 3pt line, with a total of 27 pts (3 FTs), and we beat Fordham 91-57.
(Footnote: Lowery made 7 3pts in a game, and 6 3pts made in a game since 01-02 season : Roberts 2, Marshall 2, C. Johnson 1, Hall 3)

My thought from the game is that I haven't seen much discussion on our rotation / minutes from the center position. What's going on with our former starter playing almost no time now?
Is the story over, nothing left to discuss at this point?

I think the five spot will be a rotation all year. I have not written off Kav yet. He has struggled, but so have the others at times. Each of the four centers have strengths and weaknesses. They all match up differently.
I think you will see playing time vary according to match up and which center is playing well. My prediction is each will play an important role in a victory at some point
Nice option for Archie to have four deep in the post.

Is it possible that ED35 has gone from being a pitcher to a catcher?
Stay tuned.

I hope the guys we are recruiting watched the tv broadcast. A previous NBA coach (Stan Van Gundy) had so many great things to say about dayton basketball, fans and archie. They said that with the class balance the team is set up to be an ncaa team every year
They also said that Archie has shown that if you have ability and willingness to work you will be given the chance to play as a freshman

Our center position by committee is working quite well averaging 15.7 ppg and 10 rebounds.
Keep it up Good Fellows!
