Flyer Band -No Comparison!

Having watched more basketball than anything else lately, I can't help but notice that I MISS THE UD BAND.

The blue and red airplane hats, the basketball net hats, the contagious craziness they display when they play . . .

Every other school's band is simply boring, boring, boring.

Thank you UD Band! I miss you already.

No doubt. VCU's band was pretty good, but not nearly as creative as UD.
On Saturday afternoon in Columbus, the band went up and down High St stopping on street corners, playing songs, and leading cheers. Got to appreciate their hard work.

I live in the Columbus suburbs and heard from several non-UD people how spirited Dr Willie and the pep band were on High Street!
Several of my tOSU neighbors have had nothing but good things to say about UDs Basketball program ... probably starting with the NIT game at the Shott a couple of years ago. Some have asked themselves why tOSU basketball fans do not seem to be as passionate as UD fans. Certainly not the reaction one would expect.
GO FLYERS

GO FLYERS
Cause a short distance away from their home court is a place called OHIO STADIUM where over 100,000 people show up in the seats, probably another 50 to 75,000 more people hang around the outside of the stadium (outside, in bars and restaurants, tail gate in the lots, etc.) and a majority of those in the seats play at least $1200 to $1400 for season tickets, plus parking @ $15/game (or more) and mucho dinero for food ....

So by the time BB comes around they are pretty tapped out in $ and emotions.

At the PC game the couple sitting next to me were very casual college basketball fans. They absolutely loved Willie and the band.

Without a strong and entertaining pep band, there is no college atmosphere. None.

All hail Willie!

My son-in-law's family go way back to the Detlef Schrempf days at the U of Washington. They were there when the Flyers took down U-DUB in the (I think) 1984 NCAA's. And one of the things they talk about to this day was how good the UD pep band was.

That was thirty years ago, sports fans. And they remember it like it was yesterday.

Bobber, I was in that band, and yes, Rosie and the guys took down The Berlin Wall in the Friday nighter before being bludgeoned to death by Hoya Paranoia in the last game before the Final Four. Those were my last 2 games as a student in The Band, and my gawd, was that ever an experience!

Also, I believe I have to give props to the late Tom Frericks for how he handled that trip. I can't remember which school it was, but one poor group actually got stuck up in the rafters at Pauley Pavillion for their Friday game. As the story goes, Mr. Frericks put us right down courtside, and relegated the traveling party to the upper level @ Pauley. They said at the time that he wanted as much sound/spirit as possible courtside. And we were a pretty raucous bunch.

Nice to see the tradition continuing under Dr. Willie. Great job, Band!

Ten years earlier, Mr. Frericks reserved room for a small contingent of the band to travel to Arizona on the charter. In the 1974 triple overtime game against UCLA, the Flyer pep band numbered about 14 plus the trombone of band director, Clair Miller. They were smaller in numbers than UCLA, but musically outstanding. The UCLA Song Girls (separate from cheerleaders) loved the music and asked if they could do some routines with the band.
The Dayton band continues a long tradition of finding fans wherever they travel.

To the musicians and directors - Thanks for all your hard work!!

This from the UConn message board as they watched our game vs. Louisville:
"Refs calling a tight game - think the publicity after the last game had some effect. Dayton is well coached. And their band is awesome, lots of fun."
